Helen Mirren nominated for an Olivier Award TELEGRAPH

She has won an Oscar, a Bafta and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of The Queen, and now Helen Mirren will have the chance to add an Olivier to her list of awards won for playing Elizabeth II.

Mirren has been nominated in the Best Actress category this year, for her role in the new play The Audience, directed by Stephen Daldry.

The Audience opened to a string of favourable reviews earlier this month, with Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph's theatre critic, calling Mirren's performance 'Magnificent'.

The actress will be competing for the award against Hattie Morahan, who won this year's Evening Standard Theatre Award for her role as Nora in Ibsen's A Doll's House, Billie Piper for The Effect and Kristin Scott Thomas for Old Times.

In the Best Actor category Mark Rylance has been nominated for his acclaimed, cross-dressing performance in Twelfth Night. He is up against Rupert Everett in The Judas Kiss, James McAvoy in Macbeth, Rafe Spall in Constellations and Luke Treadaway in The Curious Incident.

Old photos of a teenage Daniel Day-Lewis show hints of Lincoln By Soraya Roberts | The Juice – 23 hours ago

Want to see Daniel Day-Lewis as a 16-year-old? No, it's not his latest acting role -- this is the three-time Oscar winner as an actual teenager.

Photos have emerged of the 55-year-old "Lincoln" star in some of his first roles: as a Lincoln-esque Russian soldier Alexander Vershinin in Chekhov's "Three Sisters," and as a long-haired Feste in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night."

Day-Lewis transferred to Bedales, a creative independent school in Hampshire, England, in his early teens, and the move reportedly led to his film debut as a 14-year-old vandal in "Sunday Bloody Sunday." After graduating in 1975, he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

David Tennant launches the BBC’s ambitious Shakespeare season Former Doctor Who actor stars in Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet by E Jane Dickson 9:45 AM, 22 April 2012 (RADIO TIMES)

David Tennant is a little baffled by the Cultural Olympiad: “I’m a bit hazy as to what it actually means, what it all adds up to,” he says.

“But if it means more Shakespeare, it’s fine my me.” In cultural terms, the Bard is a world-beater, Team GB’s biggest hitter. (“Well, him and Adele,” offers Tennant. “I think they’re the book-ends of our culture.”) Themes from The Tempest will form the centrepiece of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and this week sees the launch, as part of the Cultural Olympiad, of BBC’s Shakespeare Season, with new productions, for Radio 3, of Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet (which is broadcast next Sunday).

Tennant, who picked up the Best Actor award for Kafka: the Musical in the BBC Audio Drama awards in January, takes a part in both productions. Despite a dose of flu, he’s closeted with fellow cast members in the green room at Broadcasting House, prior to recording his performance as Malvolio in Twelfth Night.
