James McAvoy: Wanted 2 Will Find James McAvoy Recruiting New Female Character Wednesday, October 24th, 2012 at 7:45am by Kevin Melrose (SPIN OFF ON LINE)

When last we heard about Wanted 2, the long-promised sequel to the 2008 action film very loosely based on the comic by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, director Timur Bekmambetov revealed he’d finally had a breakthrough on the story and original screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas were hard at work on the script.

Now, some four months later, Haas tells Hollywood.com that he and his collaborator are about to deliver a second draft that picks up with James McAvoy’s William Gibson four years after the events of the first film. “The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie,” he said. “She’s got a shitty life. He’s sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world.”

Wanted starred McAvoy as a frustrated accountant who discovers he’s the son of a professional assassin and decides to join the thousand-year-old secret society for which his father worked. The film, which grossed about $340 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, also starred Angelina Jolie as Fox, who becomes Wesley’s mentor, and Morgan Freeman as Sloan.

Timur Bekmambetov Says "Shocking" Sequel To 'Wanted' Will Follow James McAvoy's Wesley Gibson & Features A "Great Twist" NEWS BY GABE TORO | JUNE 18, 2012 9:40 AM

EXCLUSIVE: While there has been much talk, a sequel to "Wanted" has been moving slowly. While the original writers were hired to pen a sequel last fall, it remained to seen how they would continue from the blood-soaked finale of the first film, a breakneck comic book actioner from director Timur Bekmambetov that grossed $341 million worldwide. With an ending featuring a bloodbath that killed the most important characters, not to mention the biggest names in the cast, a follow-up looked like a tricky proposition, but it looks like that particular story nut has been cracked.

We spoke to Bekmambetov over the weekend during press rounds for "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and learned that "Wanted 2" is very much moving forward. "An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago," Bekmambetov said. "Because we stopped, we didn't know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we're on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking."

'Wanted 2' with James McAvoy hopefully

Wanted

America is officially in the crosshairs of a “Wanted” sequel. Late September we learned that original writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt had been secured to reanimate the stagnant state of “Wanted 2,” the sequel to 2008’s Timur Bekmambetov-directed, special effects laden action-thriller.
In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Hass and Brandt perused the process of their writing projects. Touching on “Wanted 2”, the pair — who shared screenwriting credits on the first “Wanted” with Chris Morgan—seem to indicate that the sequel’s pre-production has finally hit its pace.
Asked if the team were ever inspired to try directing their material themselves, Brandt used their current gig on “Wanted 2” to explain the goal of writing to a certain director’s strengths — a director they hope, in this case, is Timur Bekmambetov.

“Right now, we're writing the sequel, ‘Wanted 2.’ We're doing that knowing with absolute certainty that I'm not going to be directing that movie. I'm not interested in it and, hopefully, Timur [Bekmambetov] will come back on to direct. You write it with Timur's sensibility and try to give him the most leeway to do what he does really well."

Asked later in the interview about the sequel’s status as a current project, Derek Haas reinforces the team’s desire to work with Bekmambetov.

"We're hoping that it's going to be Timur directing. I think Michael and I are going to strong-arm him into Universal and make him do it. We're writing and basically picking Wesley up a few years after the events of the first movie and throwing him back into that world."

So far we know the sequel’s plot will focus in on Wesley a few years after the events of the last film. At this early stage, there is no word on whether James McAvoy will return to the starring role.
One lethal weapon “Wanted 2” will definitely not be packing is crowd-drawing A-lister Angelina Jolie. Rumors point to the possibility that Kristen Stewart may be considered for a role, although to MTV, the actress has only elaborated on her belief in the quality of the first film, and McAvoy's performance.
