Benedict Cumberbatch-Star Trek Into Darkness footage (E.)

BY MARK WORGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2012

VIDEO: Extra Trailer Footage Hints At Mystery Behind Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Star Trek' VillainIs Cumberbatch set to be Khan

The trailer of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' premiered at midnight last night, but UK and US fans of the sci-fi franchise may have missed something very important.

That's because only in the Japanese version of the trailer was a scene included which could provide a real clue as to the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous character, shown taking his revenge against the world in all versions.

In a clip not included in the other trailers (from 0:56 onwards) shows Spock and Kirk appearing to re-enact an iconic scene from the 1982 movie 'The Wrath of Khan'. In that movie there was a touching goodbye scene between Spock and Kirk, mirrored in this trailer with the line "Is there anything you would not do for your family?"

Damon Lindelof Impressed With ‘Star Trek 2’ Set And Benedict Cumberbatch Posted about 17 hours ago by Janice Kay (SCIENCE FICTION.COM)

Although he was very good at not disclosing any spoilers, Lindelof did give some pretty flattering praises of Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as the movie’s baddie:

“Benedict Cumberbatch, I can already say with a certain degree of confidence, that he is gonna give an iconic film performance and one of the best sci-fi performances that I’ve ever seen.  And not even having seen the movie yet, just sitting there in video village with the headphones on.  So I’m really psyched.”

Rumors have been flying about Cumberbatch playing the role of Khan. But Simon Pegg, who plays Scottie on the film, immediately put that rumor to rest. “(Cumberbatch is) not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing…Obviously I can’t talk about it.” He continued to say, “It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”

With filming already having been completed last week, ‘Star Trek 2’ is now in the hands of the post-production team who will have almost a year to do their magic as the movie is slated to be released on May 17, 2013.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait for too long before the first trailer is released!

Simon Pegg: Benedict Cumberbatch's Star Trek villain isn't Khan Simon Pegg has denied rumours that the villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the forthcoming Star Trek movie will be the classic Trek villain Khan. (METRO)

There had been reports the genetically engineered character - originally played by Ricardo Montalban - had been due to make a comeback in the new film, due for release next year.

However Pegg - who will once again play Scotty in the new Trek movie - has now dismissed this as 'a myth'.

'Everyone's saying it is but it's not,' he said. 'I think people just want to have a scoop.

'It annoys me - it's beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.

'It masquerades as interest in the film but really it's just nosiness and impatience.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Who Will Be The Villain In J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” Sequel? (Hint: It Rhymes With KHAAAAAAN!!!) 05/01/2012 by Jason (MAMA POP)

Well, nerds and geeks, our prayers, it seems, have been answered. Ever since Benedict Cumberbatch, Britain’s Most British Actor and star of the excellent BBC series Sherlock, was cast as a bad guy in the upcoming sequel, there’s been rampant speculation as to who he’d play. Intergalactic lothario Harry Mudd? A Gorn? Even…Khan? Well, if you guessed Khan, pour yourself a glass of Romulan ale. Both Ain’t It Cool News and the usually reliable (so I’ve heard, ahem) TrekMovie.com are reporting that Cumberbatch will be playing Khan.

Ricardo Montalban as "KHAN" in the original Star Trek Episode

Of course, nothing’s confirmed, but this does fits with a couple of things that happened with Abrams’ production. First, on the Star Trek reboot’s DVD commentary, Abrams’ team mentions that they had considered sneaking in a shot of Khan’s original starship after the closing credits. And Benicio Del Toro was being sought to play a villain in the sequel, which was what fueled the Khan rumors in the first place. (In the show, Khan was actually from the Indian subcontinent, so casting Latino actors makes about as much sense as anything else on Star Trek.) There’ve been a couple of leaked photos from the set featuring Cumberbatch fighting Zachary Quinto’s Spock, on what looks like the wreckage of an old and busted spaceship – recall that in the original series, the Enterprise crew finds Khan and his followers adrift in space, exiled from Earth after they tried to take over the planet in the mid-1990s. (The future!)

Benedict Cumberbatch's Villainous Role in 'Star Trek 2' Unveiled (ACESHOWBIZ)

The 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' actor reportedly will play the Eugenics War leader after all despite the fact that J.J. Abrams has previously denied the rumor.

While director J.J. Abrams insists on hiding details of Benedict Cumberbatch's character in "Star Trek 2", multiple insiders keep on revealing clues about the villainous character the British actor will play in the anticipated sci-fi film.

Those inside sources confirmed that the "War Horse" thesp will star as a famous old archenemy after all. According to TrekMovie,

[SPOILER ALERT!]

Cumberbatch will indeed portray the exiled Eugenics War leader Khan Noonien Singh. Several insiders confirmed the report to the site despite the fact that Abrams himself has previously denied the rumors. The site states, "Khan is back in 2013, however sources indicate that the film is not a rehash of 'Space Seed', the original Star Trek episode where Kirk and crew first encounter the genetic superman from the past."
