The Hollywood Reporter says that when the second series begins the First World War is two-years-old, with executive producer Gareth Neame promising new love interests for Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Mary (Michelle Dockery).
Also speaking at the Television Critics Assoc press tour in Beverly Hills on Sunday Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley, said of his character: "In series two, he's surrounded by explosions and in series one, he wasn't. He's in uniform a lot of the time. It's darker."
When asked about her character in series two Siobhan Finneran, who plays Sarah O'Brien, joked: "She doesn't turn into Mother Teresa."
Co-star Michelle Dockery said of the growth of her character, Lady Mary Crawley: "On first reading... she came across as a cold person and very much a snob.
"Up until the incident with Pamuk, the Turkish character, Mary became much more vulnerable from then on. She softened a little more because something happened to her."
Executive producer Rebecca Eaton said that one character from series one will not return for the second season, but she refused to say who.
Neame said that maid Gwen Dawson (Rose Leslie), who secured a job as a secretary at the end of series one, will not return.
