Irish actor Brendan Gleeson will be among the star guests at the 2011 Foyle Film Festival later this month.

This year the festival will focus on catastrophes that shook the world from the Holocaust to September 11.

The 24th annual festival will explore the impact of the 9/11 attacks on the US and broaden its focus to highlight other significant events that had an impact on the political stage.

The festival will run from Wednesday, November 23 to Sunday, November 27 at venues across the city.

In Bruges and The Guard actor Gleeson will be one of a number of high-profile guests at the popular film festival.

The award-winning film-maker Terry George, who has worked on films such as In The Name Of The Father, Some Mother’s Son and Hotel Rwanda, will also take part.

In addition to the special themed events, the festival programme includes a mix of contemporary, foreign language film, documentaries and the annual Light in Motion (LIM) competition for short films and animations. Recipients of the LIM Award qualify for consideration in the short films category of the annual Academy Awards without the standard theatrical run.

Speaking ahead of the programme launch at the weekend, festival director Bernie McLaughlin promised “five action-packed days of film premieres, top film industry guests, local and international documentaries.”

She said: “The festival is a hotly anticipated annual event and we’d like to thank our main funders Northern Ireland Screen, Derry City Council and welcome on board Omniplex group as sponsors of our education programme and opening night film.

“This is an exciting time for the festival as we approach our 25th year and also the 2013 City of Culture event and we look forward to welcoming enthusiasts of all ages to the 24th edition of the Foyle Film Festival.”

The festival opens with the Irish premiere of The Artist, a contemporary movie paying homage to the golden age of silent film.

Shot in black and white, The Artist does what the medium of film does best by giving the audience a magical step back in time to a romantic bygone era.

This year’s closing night film is the Irish premiere of Shame, Steve McQueen’s latest collaboration with actor Michael Fassbender, and one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year.
Fassbender delivers a powerful performance as a young man struggling with sexual addiction.
This year’s festival education screenings are being sponsored by Omniplex cinemas.

Highlights of the festival’s educational programme include screenings of The Help based on the No 1 New York Times bestseller by Katherine Stockett starring Emma Stone and Viola Davis, and Dolphin Tale in 3D, an inspiring true story of a brave dolphin and the compassionate strangers who banded together to save her life.

Booking for all festival films and events (including Omniplex screenings) must be made at The Nerve Centre box office which is open Monday to Friday, 9.30pm to 5.30pm (tel: 028 7137 3456 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 028 7137 3456 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, 7126 7432 or 7126 0562).
