THE GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING: A solid offering starring Scarlett Johanssen and Colin Firth.

Wellywood will play host to another international film shoot next year - a new movie from the director of Girl With a Pearl Earring.

British director Peter Webber has announced that he will film Emperor in New Zealand from January. Filming will be split between Auckland and Wellington, with some scenes also shot in Japan.

Emperor is set at the end of World War II immediately after the Japanese surrrender. It will focus on an American general who falls in love with a Japanese woman while deciding whether to prosecute the Japanese Emperor Hirohito, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Film New Zealand said it hosted Webber, along with Emperor's producers, on a reconnaissance trip earlier this year that convinced them they should film in the country.

"This success highlights New Zealand's on-going ability to attract first class filmmakers and producers," said Film NZ chief executive Gisella Carr.

New Zealanders participating in the production would include production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson, both Oscar winners, she said.
