"Immortals" takes No.1 at weekend box office

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – The 3-D action epic “Immortals” topped the domestic box office over the weekend, taking in $32 million in its debut. Relativity Media’s action flick grossed another $36 million overseas for an estimated worldwide take of $68 million.

“Immortals,” which cost $75 million to make, stars Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Frieda Pinto and Luke Evans, and is Relativity Media’s biggest film so far.
Males made up 60 percent of the fantasy-adventure’s audience, and 75 percent were under the age of 35. The film drew 66 percent of its grosses from 3-D screens.

Coming in second was Adam Sandler’s new holiday family picture “Jack and Jill,” which opened with $26 million. DreamWorks Animation and Paramount’s “Puss in Boots” dropped to third. To date, the film has a domestic cumulative take of $108.8 million. “Tower Heist” was No.4 at $13.2 million.

Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio got off to a strong start, taking in $11.5 million in its weekend release, good for the No.5 spot.

Warner Bros. expects “J.Edgar” to play to adults throughout Thanksgiving. “Jack and Jill” and “Immortals” are also counting on strong showings through the November holiday.
