So it was a big shock to see Sharpe's Sean Bean donning a blonde wig and dress for his new BBC drama earlier this month.
But now it seems the actor is fully embracing his transsexual character as he steps out again in knee-high boots and a fur-trimmed coat.
Showing off his feminine side: Actor Sean Bean is
embracing his role as a transsexual for new BBC court room drama The
Accused
The 52-year-old is playing the part for new court room drama The Accused.
He plays an English teacher called Simon and his alter ego, Tracie, whose quest for love leads to the courtroom.
Last week he was seen with a huge grin on his face as he was spotted in full make-up, a glamorous electric blue mini-dress adorned with sequins, glittery tights, and a faux fur coat.
Sean seemed to be enjoying a departure from his normal macho roles and embracing his feminine side.
But it appears the tight clothing and cosmetics may be starting to get to him.
The star was seen strutting along St Ann's Square in Manchester earlier this week as he continues to shoot scenes for the series.
Taking its toll: But the macho star doesn't seem to be
enjoying his girly get-up as much since filming began
Wearing a cream coat with a fur collar, Sean looked ever the lady in animal print tights and black leather boots.
And he of course stepped out in feminine accessories with a black clutch bag and the obligatory blonde wig.
But one thing was missing from his get-up - the wide grin he had on his face when filming started.
Usual get-up: Sean Bean normally looks dapper in his male
clothing
Sean looked positively grumpy and worn out in the wintery weather.
The new four part series, which examines the British justice system, will air on BBC1 later this year.
Ben Stephenson, controller of drama at the BBC, said Bean would feature in the third episode of the four-part series.
He told members of the Broadcasting Press Guild: 'He's playing a transsexual, a brilliant story, untold I think on mainstream television.'
