Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife among hit shows “snubbed” by the BAFTAs! April 26th, 2012 by Sarah. (UNREALITY PRIMETIME)

The list of nominees for this year’s prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Awards don’t include two of the most popular TV dramas of the last year, Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife.

In a move that’s been described as “elitist” by the Mirror, it’s been revealed that the Best Drama award will instead go to BBC3’s The Fades, E4’s Misfits, ITV’s Scott & Bailey or BBC1’s axed Spooks.

Of the omission of Call the Midwife, a BBC insider told the paper, “We are furious. Bafta are elitist and out of touch. “What do you have to do to get a Bafta nomination? Great writing – check. Brilliant performances – check. Amazing audience ratings – check.

“It’s as if being popular counts against you.”
