Save the Golden Lion! Actor Sean Bean joins campaign to protect traditional pub on Royal College Street (CAMDEN NEW JOURNAL) Published: 14 June, 2012 by TOM FOOT

ACTOR Sean Bean has joined the campaign to save one of Camden Town’s last traditional watering holes.

The man who played Boromir in The Lord of Rings and starred in the Sharpe TV series dropped in to the Golden Lion in Royal College Street on Thursday and signed a petition against the bar’s closure.

The Golden Lion is considered one of the last outposts of traditional pub life in Camden, having resisted the pressure to ‘go gastro’ or to show big-screen sports.

It is at risk of closure after developers snapped up the historic building’s freehold.

Jimmy Cantwell, who snapped Mr Bean on his mobile phone, said: “I just happened to be there.

"He’d come in looking for a pool table. We played pool and he had a few jars with some of the guys. We asked if he wouldn’t mind us taking a pic and he said he’d be happy to join the campaign.”
