Downton Abbey’s Next Season “Might” Introduce a Baby; Plus Inevitable Baby-Proofing Nightmares by Julie Miller (VANITY FAIR)
To tide over U.S. audiences who cannot be with their favorite period drama series until January, PBS debuted an official Season Three preview of Downton Abbey just last week. Among the revelations in the teaser: the Crawley women have mastered finger waves, children’s choirs are a surprisingly effective foil for any image of Bates in prison, and thankfully, Mary and Matthew seem to be enjoying their new engagement. To perhaps confirm the latter point—a relief to anyone who noticed the couple quarreling in other previews— Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens offered his own insight (and spoilers) about the next season of the critically (and Mitt Romney) acclaimed series.
When asked about the upcoming episodes, Stevens—who plays Mary’s recent fiancé, Matthew Crawley—told Entertainment Weekly, “There’s a wedding.” Stevens also naughtily added, reportedly with a grin, “There might be a baby.” (Insert stifled yelp, immediate concerns about baby-proofing. Who will block the perilous stone staircases and nail those heavy, ornate lamps to their surfaces?) Assuming that “might” means “will,” and that Stevens is not cruel enough to implant such a joyous image into the brains of Downton Abbey fans, let’s consider the baby-sourcing options:
