Henry Cavill Tumblr
Fire up the Speculate-O-tron, ladies and gentleman, because there's a big speculative leap concerning Man of Steel to be addressed.
Basically, the Superman reboot might have a villain that we weren't aware of hidden up its sleeve.
Though it's generally accepted that the Michael Shannon character against whom Henry Cavill's Superman will be going to toe-to-toe is General Zod, director Zack Snyder has been notably reluctant to actually say that the villain is Zod. Even as recently as San Diego Comic-Con in July, the 300 and Sucker Punch helmer was playing coy about the bad guy's identity. Footage at the Con was no help, since Shannon's face was only seen fleetingly. Set photos, meanwhile, provided no clues, since Shannon's sporting a generic motion-capture unitard.
So what gives? Perhaps Snyder and the creative team behind Man of Steel have been engaging in a bit of misdirection. Until now, there's been nothing firm to suggest that's the case, really, but today we have the tiniest morsel of a clue. It could also just be a bit of unrelated merchandising, but the Lego lovers over at Brickset noticed the possible info-nugget in a listing of upcoming Lego sets based on comic book properties. There's some Spider-Man stuff, a Dark Knight Rises set, and an Iron Man set meant to tie into the Extremis-influenced Iron Man 3. But look at the very last entry on the below list:
76000 Arctic Batman vs. Mr.Freeze – Aquaman on Ice
76001 Batman vs. Bane – Chase with Tumbler
76002 Superman Metropolis Showdown
76003 Superman Battle of Smallville
76004 Spider-Man – Hunting with Spider-Cycle
76005 Spider-Man – Mission at Daily Bugle
76006 Iron Man Extremis 76008 Iron Man vs Mandarin
76009 Superman Black Zero Escape
Black Zero. Not a terribly well-known Superman bad guy, Black Zero first showed up in a 1968 DC Comics story entitled "The Man Who Destroyed Krypton." There's also a Black Zero terrorist organization that has plagued Supes, but the one we're focusing on is a sort of intergalactic mercenary. Black Zero had been hired to ensure that Krypton did indeed explode, and, finding that the planetary stresses pulling Krypton apart weren't quite sufficient, participated directly in making Kal-El part of an endangered species. The bad guy crosses paths with Supes when Black Zero sets about blowing up Earth.
