Back on set: Martin Freeman was pictured hard at work in Bristol as he filmed Sherlock scenes as his character, Dr John Watson, on Friday afternoon

Production for Sherlock resumed earlier this month as the stars of the hit BBC series got to work on a new episode of the popular show.

And Martin Freeman was pictured hard at work in Bristol as he filmed scenes as his character, Dr John Watson, on Friday afternoon.

The 43-year-old star was dressed in his full costume as he cut a dapper figure in a vintage three-piece suit which was worn underneath a dark brown coat.

Top man: Martin seemed to be in a cheerful mood during his long day of filming

The actor was seen talking to show writer and star Marc Gatiss BBC crew as they got to work on Kings Street filming against a large green screen.

His co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, was not on set during the day but the star was spotted as the show was being filmed outside Gloucestershire Cathedral.

Fans gather for second day of Sherlock filming in Bristol

BRISTOL POST
January 6, 2015

FANS gathered outside the Colston Hall today eager to get a glimpse of one of the stars of Sherlock on what appears to be its second day of filming in Bristol.

But they were left clinging on to nothing more than grainy images taken from distance on their phones of the actors who arrived in cars with blacked-out windows and were ushered inside under umbrellas.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted entering a side door leading to the cellars of the music venue.

Filming has started for on a one-off special, rumoured to be being prepared for Christmas.

Fans were tipped off by writer Mark Gattis on Monday who tweeted: “On my way West. It begins... #Sherlock.”

A small crowd of mostly teenage girls gathered from about 9am outside Colston Hall after film crews arrived yesterday.

Richard Armitage finds his inner Thorin

LA TIMES
HERO COMPLEX
Dec. 22, 2014 | 12:51 p.m.

English actor Richard Armitage shares some interesting traits with his “Hobbit” alter ego, valiant dwarf Thorin Oakenshield.

“I had to be pretty honest with myself because you do get asked that question a lot, ‘Where are you like the character?'” Armitage said earlier this month. “I’m very stubborn and pigheaded like Thorin… I’m a little bit taller than him. And I can grow a beard at an astonishingly weird rate.”

Armitage’s confession was one of the highlights of the special Imax preview screening of “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” which took place Dec. 11 at New York’s AMC 34th Street 14 & Imax.

Armitage was joined on stage for a Q&A following the movie by his “Five Armies” costar Lee Pace, who plays the Elven King Thrandruil.

The final installment in Jackson’s epic “Hobbit” trilogy, “Five Armies” handily won the box-office competition this weekend — the film has grossed upward of $90.6 million since its Wednesday release.

It picks up where last year’s “The Desolation of Smaug” ends, with Thorin and company, accompanied by Martin Freeman’s good-natured hobbit Bilbo Baggins, having reclaimed the treasure of their lost homeland Erebor from the evil dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

A vengeful Smaug heads to Lake-town to decimate the nearby village, and the destruction the dragon causes leaves the townspeople insisting upon recompense from the dwarfs who disturbed his resting place, setting into motion the conflict that will grow to include the armies of the title.

Martin Freeman on 'SNL': 3 Sketches You Have to See

ROLLING STONE
BY KATE ERBLAND | December 14, 2014

Best known to American audiences as the star of Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise and as "hey, that one guy!" from Love Actually, British actor Martin Freeman definitely had something to prove on last night's Saturday Night Live – mainly, of course, that he's funny. Freeman's background in comedy might not come across while he's traipsing around Middle-earth, but there was no arguing with his comedic chops once he took the stage for a funny and exceedingly well-timed monologue. If Freeman had the first-time jitters, they weren't apparent here, and the newbie host effectively introduced himself and his style with ease and amusement.

That ease translated to a mostly well-run show that offered up a wide variety of jokes and sketches, sprinkled liberally with holiday cheer and a dash of wacky weirdness. Freeman easily fit in with the rest of the cast, and though he never got showy or over-the-top or exceedingly "host-y," his presence was a solid and consistent one. Freeman will definitely have to return for more shows and, if he continues to show the kind of skill and comfort he exhibited last night, we just might be on our way to a new classic SNL host. Save him a space in the Five-Timers Club, Timberlake.

Not a twit: Martin Freeman's partner Amanda Abbington has banned him from Twiter and social media because she fears he would say something he would later regret

Sherlock star Martin Freeman  has been banned from Twitter – by partner Amanda Abbington.

Speaking to me at last week’s Hector And The Search For Happiness premiere, Amanda, 40, revealed she has barred the star from using social media because she fears he would be unable to resist sharing one too many contentious opinions.

‘He will never tweet,’ said Amanda, pictured left with Martin. ‘He would destroy his reputation.

'He’d say something he regrets. He says things he regrets every day at home and I say, “That, right there, is why you can’t do Twitter!”

'He is very vocal about stuff so we have to be careful.’

Benedict Cumberbatch: 15 facts you didn't know about the Sherlock star

EXPRESS
By: Laura Mitchell Published: Wed, May 21, 2014

Benedict,

We can't get enough of Benedict Cumberbatch, and thankfully there's a new biography coming out that should satisfy even the most dedicated "Cumberbitch".

Being Benedict Cumberbatch, by Joanna Benecke, gives an insight into the man's life and career, and is packed with pictures and "Cumberfacts".

Famed for his role as the complex and intriguing Sherlock Holmes he is no stranger to acting out unusual personality quirks, but it seems the actor may have a few of his own.

Whether you are a devoted Cumberfan or a Benedict novice you will probably have come across the star at some point. As well as his famous role as Arthur Conan Doyle's detective the actor played Khan in Star Trek and was the voice of the dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

But while this is all common knowledge there is plenty more to know about this star than meets the eye.

From his love of steamy fan fiction to his cyber-stalker, here are 15 things you probably don't know about Benedict Cumberbatch...

1. He keeps a collection of stuffed owls. In his boudoir.

2. His favourite steamy fan fiction comes from China and Japan - in the form of erotic manga!

 3. He wishes that he'd never learned to play the trumpet.

4. He's ever so slightly in love with an overweight civil servant named Christopher (a character he played in Parade’s End).

5. While filming for Star Trek: Into Darkness, co-star and resident prankster Simon Pegg tricked Benedict into believing he had to wear dots of "neutron cream" (really it was just moisturiser) on his face to protect himself from radiation.

6. In China, Benedict and Martin Freeman are known as "Curly Fu" and "Peanut" respectively (despite the fact that Sherlock is banned).

7. Before Benedict became an actor he was a perfumer and taught English to Tibetan monks (not at the same time).

‘Sherlock’ One-Off Special Episode May Air Before Season 4

SCREEN RANT
Published 9 hours ago by Araceli Roach

Sherlock Season 4 Premiere Date Sherlock One Off Special Episode May Air Before Season 4

Between Doctor Who, Downton Abbey and Sherlock, there’s no denying that the popularity of British TV series around the world has been on the rise the last five years. So much so, in fact, that the actors on those series have become increasingly in demand, leaving many of them with the decision to either stay on their current series or make the leap across the pond for greater success in Hollywood.

Luckily, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have made the choice to continue filming their hit BBC series abroad while also pursuing their careers in the United States. Freeman currently stars in FX’s new series Fargo, and both he and Cumberbatch will next appear in the recently renamed The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

So for the moment at least, there seems to be little time for the two actors to film the highly anticipated season 4 of Sherlock. Yet, thanks to Cultbox, we know that in an upcoming appearance on British talkshow Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Freeman hinted there could still be hope for fans to see something sooner rather than later

Here’s what Freeman said:

“Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought ‘we’ve just got to do this.’ And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it.”

Sherlock Season 4: 'Filming Plans Scrapped', Reveals Actor Martin Freeman

April 19, 2014 07:48 GMT

Filming for the fourth season of the popular British show Sherlock has been postponed.

Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson in the global hit series, has revealed that plans to start filming soon have been scrapped.

"It's very hard to get together," he told Digital Spy. "But it's one of those things where you have to at some point just go, 'We're going to do it now' - otherwise we could be having this conversation in three years."

He added: "There comes a point where you've got to p*** or get off the pot."

A BBC spokesman recently told Mirror Online that filming depends mainly on cast availability: "Conversations are still ongoing regarding Sherlock's return. Steven Moffat has already said that he has mapped out a fourth series, but it is always depending on cast availability.

"The last series was a fantastic hit for us and we're massively proud of the show," the spokesperson added, stating that every member of the team of is keen to start filming as soon as schedules work out.

Sherlock and Hobbit star Martin Freeman will play his first Shakespearean role, Richard III, this summer

Sherlock and Hobbit star Martin Freeman will play his first Shakespearean role, Richard III, on the London stage this summer.

The actor has made a pact with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock to his Dr Watson) about treading the boards in plays by the Bard.

Cumberbatch will give his Hamlet at the Barbican — as this page was first to report — in August of 2015.

However, Freeman’s Machiavellian monarch will be in rehearsal by late May or early June of this year, and in performance by July.

Richard III will run through till September.

Freeman will be leading the first play in the second season for Jamie Lloyd Productions, which performs under the Trafalgar Transformed banner at the Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall.

Lloyd set up his company with Howard Panter and the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Tickets for Richard III, the first of four plays in the new season, are expected to go on sale in the next seven to ten days.

Director Lloyd is still casting other roles for Richard III.

Freeman was last on stage at the Royal Court in Bruce Norris’s powerful play Clybourne Park. His career has taken off like a rocket since the success of The Office and Sherlock on BBC television.

Richard Armitage on "kung fu ninja" Martin Freeman and "extraordinary" Benedict Cumberbatch

RADIO TIMES

Richard Armitage on "kung fu ninja" Martin Freeman and "extraordinary" Benedict Cumberbatch

You're a tall man but you play a dwarf - is it strange seeing yourself looking so short on-screen?

We were actually bigger versions of ourselves than when we were actually shooting it so I never felt small but when you watch it back and you see the reduction in size, you think, "surely I’m not that small?" It does slightly kick you in the guts a little bit because I see the character as having high status. He thinks a lot of himself and dwarves have big egos so when you see yourself a little bit diminished around other characters... He’s got a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

Does the hair help you summon up Thorin's kingly presence?

The hair helps, yes. It was interesting because when we were putting him together and giving him a look, there was a temptation to over-decorate him with jewellery and finery to give him that kingly quality but actually by taking it away and making him look like a warrior, it seemed to give him more status which makes him interesting.

Would you make a good warrior?

I‘d probably need feeding a bit better than I am now but yes, maybe. I think my fighting skills have certainly been improved by working with Peter Jackson. I started out with a really great stunt double but by the end of the third film Peter was not really putting [him] in – he was letting me do all the fight sequences and I took it as a compliment but there’s a part of me that hopes it’s good enough. It certainly pushed me - I cried and I bled and I sweated so hopefully it’ll all be there in the third film.

How do you rate Martin Freeman as a leading man?

He’s just brilliant. He’s so inventive and he keeps the atmosphere on set really buoyant because he’s got a natural sense of comedy, as Martin but also as Bilbo Baggins. He really experiments with the role and he makes me work in a different way. He’s always having a bit of a laugh but when it comes to doing the serious stuff he can always pull it out the bag. He’s incredibly moving in the third film and that’s always surprising because you think you know Martin to be a great comedian but he’s also a great dramatic actor as well. I really enjoyed working with him and I think a lot of the evolution of Thorin is down to the way that he portrayed Bilbo. There wouldn’t be a Thorin without a Bilbo.

Any stand out moments of hilarity...?

He was just very good at being a little ninja Bilbo. Behind the scenes he’d have a little crack at everybody who was a bit bigger than him but he’d try his kung fu ninja moves on everybody which always made me laugh.

His Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch is also in the film...

I actually got to work with him face-to-face which I didn’t think I would because he was doing a voice in a room and he said it himself that he was a little bit disconnected from the shoot. But I went in one day to do some of the dialogue Thorin has with Smaug at the end so I saw him working and we delivered lines to each other which was a real treat. He’s an extraordinary actor and has a great following and thank goodness because it all adds to the popularity of the film.

Benedict Cumberbatch steals the movie: ‘Smaug’ fires up second ‘Hobbit’

THE EDGE
Thursday, December 12, 2013
By:James Verniere

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is not the first Peter Jackson film with a scene-stealing performance by a digital character. In this second installment in the “Hobbit” trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again,” the standout creature is Smaug, a hoard-guarding giant lizard that speaks in the dulcet tones of ubiquitous Englishman Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch transforms a fire-breathing dragon into a Middle-earth Hannibal Lecter with wings and fangs and talons, oh my, and the results are scary, seductive, insinuating and sibilant. He even knows how to pronounce “precious.”

Back in their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain of Erebor, ancestral homeland of the dwarves, are 13 heavily armed and heavily bearded dwarves, led once again by the regal Thorin Oakenshield (the gifted Richard Armitage), rightful King of the Dwarves, accompanied by wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and “burglar” and ring-bearer Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a hobbit from the Shire. Still endeavoring to hunt the journeyers down is the white Orc Azog (Manu Bennett), who commands a hellish Orc posse and rides a slavering white Warg.

In opening scenes, the band is rescued from the Orcs and taken captive by warrior “woodland elves” Legolas (LOR’s Orlando Bloom) and ginger-haired Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), who enjoys a flirtation with “surprisingly tall” dwarf Kili (Aidan Turner). Also back are Buster Keaton-inspired action set pieces and a Rube Goldberg device in the form of the dwarves’ reignited furnaces and smelting operations.

Benedict Cumberbatch's Hobbit dance

FILM NEWS
added: 9 Dec 2013 // by: Film-News.co.uk Newsdesk

Benedict Cumberbatch "danced on the roof of the world" during The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The British actor voices the title dragon in Peter Jackson's fantasy sequel.

While shooting the movie in New Zealand Benedict was blown away by the scenery and couldn't resist busting some moves in an idyllic location.

"I went walking and I swam the glacial lake as well. Peter organised a helicopter ride as well, which I think is probably the most extraordinary experience of my life. We landed on the top of a glacier... I was in jogging pants, a T-shirt and a pair of trainers on the top of a glacier in an area inaccessible to humans by foot or climbing," he recalled to flicksandbits.com.

"So we were just on this very pristine and unspoiled glacier, hovering in a helicopter and it lands and I get out and I just danced on the roof of the world on a glacier, in my T-shirt, jogging pants and trainers. It was incredible. I've got a deep, deep affection for the country."

One scene in the film sees Smaug try and capture hobbit Bilbo Baggins, played by Benedict's Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman.

Sherlock: What's next for Martin Freeman?

Martin Freeman’s casting in Fargo is a great next step in a post-Hobbit career. (Picture: PBS-Hartswood Films for the BBC)

It was a question we’d been wondering about for a little while, and even in the middle of last week were openly discussing amongst ourselves following a trawl of the Internet Movie Database – just what will Martin Freeman do next?

Ironically, a couple of days later we had our answer. He is the co-lead alongside Billy Bob Thornton in a ten part ‘limited series’ (that is, a series with no expectation of subsequent seasons) for US cable network FX, based on the 1996 Coen Brothers classic Fargo.

The Hobbit Trilogy has dominated Freeman’s life for much of the last three years, as it did for the actors of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy a decade ago.

For many of that cast, the next project they took was the crucial next step after such a consistent, and probably exhausting, run of acting work of playing the same character for such an extended length of time.

The Hobbit was of course different from the earlier trilogy, with scheduled breaks in production allowing Martin to fit in John Watson twice(!) for Sherlock series two and three, as well as work on John Hardwick’s Svengali and Edgar Wright’s The World’s End.

This new project ticks the boxes perfectly for Freeman, one of the nicest and most down to earth actors you could ever hope to meet.

We now have a new major question of course – what will he sound like with a Minnesota accent?

Steven Moffat says show could not continue without Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman!

sherlock-1

UNREALITY PRIMETIME
August 22nd, 2013 by Anna Howell.

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have found global recognition, admiration and fame following the success of the hit BBC detective series, Sherlock.

Both have had their pick of prime time TV slots and Hollywood films since their casting, sparking fears that when the delayed third series was finally ready to start filming, both wouldn’t have the time or inclination to re-join the cast, dazzled too much by all the shiny new doors of opportunity currently piling up in front of them.

Of course we had nothing to worry about as both actors are as much English gentlemen as their characters, which is one of the reasons they are both so well loved, and have since both come out to declare that they will stay loyal to the show and play the characters for as long as the show wants them too.

So, with that in the bag and the next two series already signed for, show runner Steven Moffat has now opened up admitting that the show actually couldn’t continue without either actor.

Martin Freeman: 'I get more fanmail for Sherlock than The Hobbit' Published Saturday, Jul 6 2013, 11:12am EDT | By Catherine Earp | DIGITAL SPY

Martin Freeman has revealed that he receives more fanmail for Sherlock than The Hobbit.

The actor, who is currently shooting the final scenes for the last film in the Hobbit trilogy, said that he is better known for his BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch than Peter Jackson's movie franchise.

He told The Independent: "I get more 12-year-olds coming up to me than I used to. But, I promise, I still have a lot of conversations with people that have no idea who I am. Which is great for me as I usually just want to eat a bowl of pasta in peace.

"I'd have been quite happy being known as 'Tim from The Office' and now Bilbo Baggins and John Watson have come along.

'Sherlock' is one of the biggest things I will do, ever - we could never have predicted that level of insanity around the series. I think that gets me more fan mail than Bilbo. Not that I think I am the biggest deal in the universe."

He added: "If someone had a pint with me, they'd find out pretty quickly I'm not so nice, I'm not Tim from The Office, although a lot of people still think I am. I have absolutely no problem telling someone to f**k off."

Benedict Cumberbatch: ‘Sherlock’ Season 3 Spoilers: UK/US Simultaneous Airing? Sherlock’s Resurrection, Episode in India? By Ruhi Jiwani , FashionnStyle Reporter | Jun 21, 2013 02:33 PM EDT

Benedict Cumberbatch

Fans have had to wait a great deal between seasons to watch "Sherlock" which first aired in 2011. The first season only consisted of three movie-length episodes, as did the second.

The third season is all set to air in late October, early November 2013, as per IMDB. Benedict Cumberbatch was quoted as saying, "Hopefully we're going to broadcast it simultaneously here and in the States by the end of the year, I'm hoping. That is a hope that we talked about a while ago" as per BBC America.

If the show is broadcast at the same time in the UK and the US, that would be ideal because, given how popular the series has become, many people in the US have already watched it (it's readily available on Netflix). So it makes no sense to have to wait another two years.

The first episode of Season 3 is titled "The Empty Hearse" and is based on Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Empty House."

This story by Doyle was also the one where he resurrected Holmes. So it makes sense that it should be the next one in the "Sherlock" series since Sherlock was killed off at the end of the second season and will now be resurrected.
