Joanna Lumley has campaigned on animal welfare issues, fought for the rights of Gurkhas, and even attempted to win membership of the all-male Garrick Club.

Now, however, the actress is planning her most daunting mission yet. The star of Absolutely Fabulous tells Mandrake that she is to defy Foreign Office advice and journey into Iran, in search of Noah’s ark. “I’m going to have to get my hard hat on and my bulletproof vest,” she says.

“I’ve got a new documentary to make for the end of the year, where I’m going to try and find Noah’s ark. They’ve found the ruins of something that looks like a big ship in the hills.”

Liam Neeson and Russell Crowe sought for Noah's Ark

Russell Crowe is being linked to Darren Aronofsky's Noah's Ark

Russell Crowe and Liam Neeson are reportedly being courted by Darren Aronofsky for his biblical epic Noah.

The Black Swan director is to tell the classic apocalyptic tale of Noah's Ark on the big screen and wants Master and Commander star Russell to play the title role, Deadline reports.

Aronofsky is also said to want The Grey star Liam for another unknown role.

The only other major character known to be in Aronofsky's version of the Bible story, which he has already published as a graphic novel, is the villain of the film, who argues against Noah's faith, while he is building his massive ship in preparation for the coming flood.

Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender were among those previously linked to the role of Noah.

The film is expected to begin filming this summer to be released next year.

Michael Fassbender: Mary Parent onboard to produce Aronofsky's 'Noah' (M & C)

Mary Parent has come on to produce Paramount Pictures and New Regency's re-imagining of the Noah's ark story titled "Noah," to be directed by Darren Aronofsky.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arnon Milchan is also producing for New Regency along with Aronofsky and Scott Franklin.

After Christian Bale turned down the lead, Aronofsky is now looking to Michael Fassbender ("Shame") to fill the role.

Noah's Ark is the ship that, according to the Book of Genesis, was built by Noah at God's order to save himself, his family, and the world's animals from the Great Flood.

Aronofsky and Ari Handel wrote the first draft of the script with John Logan ("Any Given Sunday," "Gladiator," "Hugo") doing a rewrite.

Parent, formerly the head of production at Universal and chairman of MGM's worldwide motion picture group, is also producing Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
