Three Musketeers Review

TIMES LIVE

Alexandre Dumas' novel was first filmed in 1903 and there have been 21 film versions over the decades. Each successive film has reflected the tone and style of the era in which it was made. This 22nd film is pointedly aimed at the teen-to-20s audience and it comes off as a flashy, youthful adventure romp. Director Paul WS Anderson made a name for himself with sci-fi, blood-and-gore horror series such as Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Alien V Predator. His upgrade of this swashbuckling period piece features the kind of action and violence that current audiences enjoy.

The novel's plot remains barely changed, with a naïve young man, d'Artagnan (Logan Lerman), meeting three roistering musketeers Athos (Matthew McFadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans). They take on this newcomer as they try to protect King Louis XIII from the scheming Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) and the evil M'lady De Winter (Milla Jovovich). The story has been brought bang up to date with 3D imagery and spectacular duels, chases and battles enhanced with the latest CGI techniques. The sets and costumes are beautifully styled, but when all is said and done, what the audience gets is a great deal of exuberant combat between good guys and bad guys, aimed squarely at the teen market
