BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH EXCITED TO START WORK ON THE HOBBIT PREQUELS

BBC's Sherlock Holmes actor Benedict Cumberbatch who has starred in films including Atonement, The Other Boleyn Girl, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the upcoming War Horse has expressed his excitement to work on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit prequels.

The War Horse actor has signed on to voice and provide the motion-capture performance for dragon Smaug in The Lord of the Rings prequels and tells Collider "I'm playing Smaug, I mean I'm physicalising him as a dragon I'm not just doing the voiceover, so it'll be a physical role which I'm no stranger to.

I did Frankenstein at the beginning of the year with Danny Boyle at the National Theatre and playing the creature in that was a very full-on and sort of corporeal experience."

Cumberbatch says that he'll begin work as Smaug in early 2012 and adds "I can't wait, but the conversations have yet to start really in earnest because they've been doing the first film and I've been doing the second series of Sherlock and another series which I'm working on now called Parade's End for HBO and BBC with Tom Stoppard, and Rebecca Hall co-starring.

I've already started working out and doing various movement exercises to get myself limber for that all-important jump suit with balls on it, otherwise known as motion-capture. But I can't wait, I'm really excited. I go to film it in January."

The Hobbit sees the return of Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis who reprise their roles from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and they are joined by newcomers Stephen Fry, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, James Nesbitt, Lee Pace, Aidan Turner and Luke Evans and his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.
