Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle believes it is the uptight attitude of the characters which makes the show so gripping.
The actor plays valet Mr Bates, whose romance with Anna has hooked viewers, along with Matthew Crawley and Lady Mary's secret love for one another. Brendan thinks the characters' inability to admit their feelings adds a thrill for viewers.
He said: "It was a different time. People couldn't express themselves and communicate. Now we're all encouraged to say what we think and what we feel and to express ourselves.
"People were not so much then, especially amongst the lower classes and that restraint is something that is part of appeal of the show."
But with his character waiting to hang for the alleged murder of his ex-wife, Brendan promised plenty of excitement in the Christmas special, even if the characters don't confront it openly.
He said: "That doesn't mean to say you don't convey high emotions, which you'll see in the Christmas special, everybody is, the stakes are very, very high for almost all the characters. It's interesting, the social morals of the time, that stoicism and restraint I think is part of the appeal of the show."
