The Downton Abbey Christmas special will be a "weepy one" according to actor Dan Stevens who plays Matthew Crawley in the TV series.

In the festive Edwardian household, fans will also find out the fate of servant Mr Bates.
The character, arrested for murder of his ex-wife, married another servant.

Brendan Coyle who plays Mr Bates said: "It's a perilous Christmas for him."

The actor also said "without revealing what happens" we might find out whether it "could be the end for Mr Bates."

The two-hour episode to be shown on Christmas Day on ITV also has "a lot of love on the cards, but I can't say with whom" said Dan Stevens.

In the last series of the period drama we saw a grief stricken Matthew tell Lady Mary there could never be anything between them after the death of his fiancee to Spanish Flu.

But the tension between the pair is still evident, even though she is also engaged to Sir Richard Carlisle.

Dan Stevens said: "Matthew very firmly believes him and Mary can't be together. We'll have to decide if anyone else can help him lift the cloud. It's a weepy, but a good weepy, yes but it is a weepy."

There was also confirmation a third series of Downton Abbey is in the making but "no more details", added actor Brendan Coyle
