Sir Paul McCartney almost doubled his income in 2011, it has been revealed.

The Beatles legend earned £29m in the last 12 months, compared to the £16.4m he made in 2010.

His company MPL Communications also saw its takings increase, raking in a pre-tax profit of £12.8m - over £9m more than last year.

Despite having a highly-lucrative 2011, McCartney took a salary of just £1m from his company. In 2010 he paid himself an income of £6.7m, according to The Sun.

McCartney's earnings were boosted by a six-month, 19-date world tour, which came to an end in Liverpool on Tuesday (December 20).

In October, the 69-year-old him married US heiress Nancy Shevell at a ceremony in London.

"Macca must have picked up a few lucky coins in the past couple of years," a source commented. "Not only has he got married to a lovely lady, he's also had a hugely successful world tour."

McCartney is set to release a new studio album - his first for five years - in February 2012.
