If Russell Crowe's Twitter updates are any indication, the 47-year-old appears to be aiming for the body that made him famous in Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning 2000 film "Gladiator".

Crowe is getting ready to shoot scenes as Superman's father Jor-El for director Zack Snyder superhero reboot "Man of Steel." The film, which stars Henry Cavill in the pivotal role, is slated for a summer 2013 release.

2 hr walk 90 mins in the gym, keep walking past restaurants full of Christmas lunchers, jealous," Crowe tweeted yesterday. "yesterday 1 hr walk 1 hr gym, today pitiful bike ride but it is a very special day and i've got other things I need to do. go hard tomorrow," he wrote earlier in the week.

According to ContactMusic, the actor is pursuing intense excercise sessions coupled with a healthy, gluten-free diet. The public updates on his regimen appear to be following a similar strategy used by Senator Claire McCaskill earlier this year. The 58-year-old says she used twitter to keep her effort honest. "It meant that people were going to be watching to see if, in fact, I stayed on track," she said, later announcing that she had lost over 50 lbs.

So far, 12 days into what he says is a hardcore 105 day training period, Crowe has already lost 16 lbs.

"220 lbs this morning, started at 236.4 lbs. 45 min walk, 12 mins eliptical, weighted objects 40 mins, walk 25 mins. 2400 cal a day maximum, all meals & all beverages. Where possible gluten free," he recently wrote. "There is a long way to go, one layer of tissue paper per day of effort and diet ... it takes a long time."

The first trailer for "Man of Steel", in which we'll likely get a glimpse of a healthier Crowe, is expected to hit next June.
