Diehard Downton Abbey fans, brace yourselves.

For one of the much-loved cast members of the period drama is to cast off her pristine pinny and make the transition from lady's maid to hardnosed police officer.

Actress Joanne Frogatt, 31, who had a key role in the two-hour Downton special on Christmas Day when her character Anna's valet husband found himself on trial for murder, has landed herself a role in controversial film Filth, to be shot next year.

Based on the crime novel by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, Filth stars James McAvoy as scheming, misanthropic policeman Bruce Robertson, who craves violence, drugs and pornography.

'The issues that the film touches on are very close to the bone and the cast have been warned that it may divide audiences,' says an insider.

'What many Downton enthusiasts don't realise is that she is no stranger to provocative roles.'
In 2006 Joanne played serial killer Myra Hindley's sister and more recently won an award for her performance as a soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from Iraq.

While I respect the actress wanting to "stretch" her abilities, I'm pretty much turned off by any series/movie that stresses violence and porn. Doubtful I'll pay to see it or watch it if it comes on T.V. I think that's why we watch/enjoy such high quality series such as Downton Abbey. It's a relief from the hate/killing/porn/sex films that we seem to be bombarded with in the USA. Funny how everyone is surprised when you have someone like Spielberg make a film and it's a BIG HIT. Others choose make junk and pander to those quick $$, but I think most us of want Quality and a GOOD STORY LINE! IMO!

I thought it was really hard to find a good movie this year. I'm getting too old for the comic book ones to interest me and I don't like the video game like explosions and nonsense. Just to get a movie with a beginning a middle and an ending would be an improvement.
