Family peril: Ewan McGregor in a scene from The Impossible

Scottish star Ewan McGregor has talked about filming true-life tale The Impossible and trying to “wrap his head” around the devastating effects of the Boxing Day tsunami.

The 2004 natural disaster killed over 230,000 people in 14 countries, caused by the third-largest-ever-recorded earthquake.

McGregor stars in The Impossible alongside Naomi Watts, as parents of a family in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time.

The cast and crew reportedly spent six months filming in actual locations that had been hit.
McGregor said: "I can't wrap my head around the thousands of deaths.

"It's always on your mind when you're there. Everywhere you look reminds you of it. You're swimming and you're thinking: 'This is the scene.'"

Many of the movie’s extras are apparently survivors of the disaster, and the movie is directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who helmed 2007’s The Orphanage.

However, despite the devastation McGregor said that Thailand is still a stunning place.

He explained: "Ultimately it's beautiful. It's like being in New York after 9/11. You can still enjoy New York, right?"

So far only a foreign language teaser has been released for the film, promising an October 2012 release date and showing off some extremely chilling scenes. If your Spanish is good enough, take a look below:
