Written on A new clip for British actor Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, Coriolanus, has been released online this week. Based on a tragedy by English playwright William Shakespeare, this adaptation also stars Fiennes (Harry Potter) alongside Scottish actor Gerard Butler (Machine Gun Preacher).
The clip, which can be seen below, takes place early in the film when Caius Martius, aka Coriolanus (Fiennes), meets his nemesis Aufidius (Butler) in the heat of battle. The tragedy then follows Coriolanus who, in the original play, is a great Roman general of the 5th century BC and a banished hero of Rome as he allies with Aufidius to take his revenge on the city.
The adaptation seems to follow in the steps of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet from 1996, with a modernised version of Shakespeare’s play that retains the original dialogue… just with a lot more blood and violence. I think this is definitely one to see this month as both Fiennes and Butler are great, even if fearful, actors.
Coriolanus had a limited release in New York and LA on 2nd December 2011, but will be officially released nationwide from 20th January. Here’s the new clip:
