Rupert Penry-Jones: Whitechapel fans are in for a treat with series 3 (Seen It)

The first episode has probably the spookiest and most tense opening of any TV series in years – a room full of seasoned telly hacks were on the edge of their seats.

If you were less than convinced by the Krays plotline of the last series, there’s some good news – the format has changed, dropping the copycat theme in favour of using Buchan’s knowledge of crimes as a “map” to investigate new cases.

Changing formats can be a tricky thing to pull off, it’s very easy to break a show in the process.
Thankfully the tweaks to Whitechapel are a genuine improvement, avoiding the need to contrive more copycat cases and allowing stories true to the original run’s tone, rather than its plot.
