Benedict Cumberbatch: Rumpole and The Man Of God, Radio 4 (THE TELEGRAPH)

Rumpole and The Man Of God, Radio 4,
Gillian Reynolds previews Radio 4's new Rumpole adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch

Timothy West stars as the older Horace Rumpole, with Benedict Cumberbatch, his voice matching perfectly, as Rumpole the younger.

It’s 1959, and the barrister is called to the defence of a clergyman, accused of shoplifting, clearly innocent yet oddly reluctant to be cross examined under oath. The whole truth, to which this would commit him, could perhaps put him in some serious professional peril.

Interwoven is the tale of Frobisher (Stephen Critchlow), fellow barrister, friend of Rumpole, a confirmed bachelor who suddenly announces his engagement. His fiancée seems oddly familiar to Rumpole. And Mrs Rumpole, the dreaded Hilda (Jasmine Hyde), breaks big news.

Part two follows on Friday
