Downton Abbey: Veteran actress Shirley MacLaine makes a majestic arrival onto Downton Abbey set (MAIL ONLINE)

Is Dowager Grantham about to meet her match?

By GEORGINA LITTLEJOHN and EMILY SHERIDAN

She once asked 'why does every day involve a fight with an American?' Words that could soon start to ring true for The Right Honourable Violet Crawley, Countess of Grantham with the arrival of a rather formidable New Yorker to Downton Abbey. And by the looks of things, Martha Levinson is set to shake things up at the manor - and will no doubt clash with the former mistress of the house.

From New York to York: Shirley, seen in the car with actress Lucille Sharp, who plays her ladies' maid Miss Reed, plays Countess Cora Grantham's mother

Not much is known about her character, apart from the fact she's Cora's mother from New York and is visiting her daughter and granddaughters, but knowing the turbulent comings and goings at Downton, she is no doubt set to cause a stir among the family and staff alike. MacClaine, 77, was announced as the new cast member last month in what appears to be a huge coup for ITV. And she was welcomed with open arms by the cast and crew as she arrived in the UK and on the Highclere Castle set for the first time.
