DOWNTON Abbey has turned Warwickshire butcher’s son Brendan Coyle into an international hit.

Brendan can be seen playing stoic valet Bates when the glossy ITV hit returns on Christmas Day with a two-hour special.

The 1920s TV drama has seen Bates deal with an injured leg, fall in love and end up behind bars after being falsely accused of murdering his jealous ex-wife.

Brendan, whose father ran a butcher’s shop in Rugby, said: “A friend in LA was working on a film recently and he sent me a photograph of one of the crew wearing a Free Bates t-shirt. I don’t have one, but maybe that’s my Christmas presents sorted out.”
