Brendan Coyle: Mr Bates favourite to die in Downton Abbey series four

RADIO TIMES
Ellie Walker-Arnott
11:52 AM, 19 September 2013
Downton Abbey's return is imminent. And this is the question on everyone's lips...
Who will Julian Fellowes kill off next?
We lost Lady Sybil AND Matthew Crawley in the show's third series/ Christmas special. If we were in Downton Abbey, we'd be worried. But, according to the bookies, some of the cast members have more reason to be concerned than others...
With worryingly short odds of 3/1, Lord Grantham's valet Bates should be quaking in his boots. As should sneaky under butler Thomas Barrow, who's 7/1 to meet his maker. Perhaps the pair will perish together when old rivalries come to a head?
The Dowager Countess is the third most likely character to get the chop, with odds of 8/1 from William Hill. In our humble opinion, Fellowes would be a fool to axe the quick-tongued matriarch, who, let's be fair, is the reason plenty of us tune into the Sunday night show. But, you never know, this might be the season Maggie Smith decides to leave the Abbey behind...
Violet's son Robert is next in line for the kill, with 10/1, while Downton's cook Mrs Patmore has odds of 12/1. We'd keep away from that newfangled and unpredictable electric mixer if we were you, Patmore.

'We see a darker and a more determined side to Bates' says Downton Abbey's Brendan Coyle (EXPRESS) By: Kirsty McCormackPublished: Tue, June 25, 2013

Despite being cleared of his wife's murder at the end of series three, the valet is no longer the man he used to be.
"We see a darker and a more determined side to Bates than we’ve seen before in series four," said Brendan Coyle, who plays Lord Grantham's faithful servant.
And when asked by RadioTimes.com if he enjoyed unleashing his mean and moody side, the 49-year-old actor replied: "Yes it was" before adding: "And there’s even more in store for you this year..."

BRENDAN COYLE: Win Kinky Downton Abbey Dinner Date with Bates - Up for Auction - by Julie Miller (VANITY FAIR)
If the idea of waiting until January 2014 to see your beloved Bates during the fourth season of Downton Abbey seems unconscionable—like your own Batesian prison sentence—Origin Theatre Company is offering solace to one super-fan with an amazing, somewhat kinky new auction. British actor Brendan Coyle, who plays the wrongly accused valet on the series, has decided to allow the winning bidder to lavish him with the kind of care and attention that his character reliably provides on the show.
During one evening in New York (sometime between August and December 2013, according to Coyle’s schedule), the actor “has agreed to let himself be waited on hand and foot by a super lucky auction bidder.” What does waiting on Coyle encompass, exactly? According to the auction’s description . . . the winner “will read poetry to Coye in a horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park” [Blogger’s note: !!!!!!!] “and then take Coyle to dinner at the super fancy Per Se at the Time Warner Center, all the while making sure that Coyle’s every need is taken care of.” (The off-color implications of this invitation are open for interpretation.)

Warwickshire's Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle tells of international fame (COVENTRY TELEGRAPH)
by Marion McMullen, Coventry TelegraphDec 24 2012
DOWNTON Abbey has turned Warwickshire butcher’s son Brendan Coyle into an international hit.
Brendan can be seen playing stoic valet Bates when the glossy ITV hit returns on Christmas Day with a two-hour special.
The 1920s TV drama has seen Bates deal with an injured leg, fall in love and end up behind bars after being falsely accused of murdering his jealous ex-wife.
Brendan, whose father ran a butcher’s shop in Rugby, said: “A friend in LA was working on a film recently and he sent me a photograph of one of the crew wearing a Free Bates t-shirt. I don’t have one, but maybe that’s my Christmas presents sorted out.”

Brendan Coyle: Downton Abbey star hits out over camera phone pictures (NORTHHAMPTON CHRONICLE)
By Daniel Owens
Published on Tuesday 16 October 2012 10:44
Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle has hit out at fans who film him surreptitiously on camera phones.
The Northamptonshire actor, 49, has become a household name thanks to his role as valet John Bates in Julian Fellowes’ hit ITV1 period drama.
He told the Radio Times: “One thing I’m really keen not to do is complain about the fact that I got a job that’s made me very successful.
“But what I will say is that everyone on the planet has a camera. I posed for about 40 photographs yesterday.
“I don’t mind stopping for a photograph, yes, sure, what I really mind is...” Coyle then did an impression of someone trying to secretly film him.
Coyle said that becoming a heartthrob later in life had not affected his love life.
He added: “I’m going to be 50 soon. It just doesn’t seem to be that important any more. I’m single, I’m looking for something meaningful....”
The former Lark Rise To Candleford actor added: “By the time you’ve been single for quite a long time, you can get quite specific about what you can and can’t put up with.

Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle – “We know when the show is going to end” (RADIO TIMES)
“I can pretty much say all of [the cast] know when Downton is going to end,” says Brendan Coyle in an exclusive interview in the new issue of Radio Times.
“This is a show with a finite life. If we bring this into the 50s, it’s Emmerdale. Though I really like Emmerdale…”
Coyle’s character Mr Bates is currently in prison having been found guilty of his first wife’s murder – although whether he’s been rightfully convicted remains the central mystery of Downton.
“If you think it’s ambiguous now, it gets more ambiguous,” warns Coyle. “Bates has been in the Boer War… he would have killed a lot of people. Does that mean he can kill his wife? What does it do to you?”

'Downton Abbey' star Joanne Froggatt gets married
BANG Showbiz
Published Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 7:34AM EDT
'Downton Abbey' star Joanne Froggatt has married.
The 31-year-old actress -- who plays housemaid Anna Bates in the period drama -- wed her long-term partner James Cannon on Oct. 6, 2012.
The church ceremony was attended by several cast members from Julian Fellowes' award-winning show.
The blonde beauty is also a married woman on-screen and is constantly trying to prove her husband, valet John Bates -- played by Brendan Coyle -- didn't murder his first wife.
Froggatt will be taking a short break from her role as Anna, to settle in with her IT director husband and enjoy a relaxing honeymoon.
The actress previously admitted she was struggling to find time to plan her wedding while juggling filming commitments.
Froggatt told People magazine: "This is what you hope for, really -- you've just got to take these times and enjoy them and grasp them by the horns and go with it because there will be quiet times again in the future. But I'm enjoying every minute of it at the moment."

Brendan Coyle: DOWNTON ABBEY STAR REVEALS HIS GRANDFATHER IS A DONEGAL MAN September 17, 2012 (DONEGAL DAILY.COM)
A star of one of television’s current most popular shows has revealed his grandfather comes for Ramelton.
Brendan Coyle has become a huge hit on the ITV period drama Downton Abbey.
Coyle, 48, says his character on the show, Bates, reminds him of his grandfather.
“What he concealed was much more important than what he revealed. He reminds me of my grandfather,” he said.

Bates behind bars: With 20 years of hard labour ahead of him, the valet’s quick temper could land him in even deeper trouble By DAILY MAIL REPORTER (MAIL ON LINE)
As the New Year dawns, the residents of Downton are poised to embrace the new decade with optimism – all that is, but Bates.
Valet to the Earl of Grantham, husband of Anna, and friend to almost all the other servants, Mr John Bates is locked in a prison cell, convicted of his first wife’s murder.
He is in for a long stretch, 20 years at least; though this is better than it might have been – at his trial he was sentenced to hang. His present mental state is something that we – and those around him – can only guess at.
Bates has admitted he felt lost and became a drunkard when he was invalided out of the Army after the Boer War. He believed he had made his wife’s life such a misery, he needed to atone by going to prison for a crime that she had committed, stealing the regimental silver.
Bates has not been able to take whatever life threw at him with a stiff upper lip. Beneath that calm exterior we know there is a man who is both kind and sensitive to the feelings of those close to him, which is why he is one of the most loved characters in the series.
Meeting Anna changed everything for Bates. When he began working at Downton Abbey, his one hope had been to hold onto his job, which at times looked highly unlikely.
The other servants were doubtful he’d be able to do the work due to his limp, and some plotted to get him fired. Bates fought to keep his position. It provided a refuge and kept him apart from his estranged wife, Vera. Having a criminal record, he knew other work opportunities would be limited.
At Downton he had a roof over his head, three meals a day and the patronage of his friend and master, Lord Grantham.
Despite his enigmatic manner, Bates’ fundamental goodness shone through and it wasn’t long before he had won the respect of nearly all the staff below stairs. Although the butler, Carson, initially took against Bates on the grounds his disability would impair his work, he now knows better.
The fact the valet is in prison for murder is not enough for Carson to waver in his protection of the man.
Unexpectedly, Bates fell in love with Anna and she returned his feelings. Together they planned a family life, running a small country hotel. Now he’s in prison, Anna’s faith in her husband keeps Bates going. She loves him, absolutely and entirely, giving him the strength he needs.
As Brendan Coyle, the actor who plays Bates, says, ‘At first he doesn’t think he’s worthy of Anna – of this goodness that’s come into his life.

Downton Abbey: An interview with Brendan Coyle (John Bates) (LOST IN TV)
You know your character has made an impact when you start seeing your face on T-shirts.
“A friend in LA was working on a film recently and he sent me a photograph of one of the crew wearing a Free Bates T-shirt. I don’t have one but maybe that’s my Christmas presents sorted out...”
According to Coyle an entire Free Bates campaign is being waged round the world, after the stoic valet was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife.
“On Twitter there’s a Legal Bates team and there was a Free Bates rally in San Francisco recently. Free Bates car stickers are quite a thing over there. In fact fans have started making a whole load of Free Bates merchandise. Licensing? Now you’re talking...”
Despite the public clamour (and the T-shirts) series three begins with Bates no closer to freedom than when we left him.
“He’s in prison,” says Coyle. “And he’s finding it a bit tedious to be honest - he’s very much in isolation from everyone else. And he’s getting bullied a bit. He’s pushed and provoked by people in prison who have taken against him.”
There is always a sense with Bates that beneath a calm veneer there is anger just waiting to be vented. How far can a man be taunted before he snaps?
“When anyone’s provoked you might see a response that you don’t expect. We know that he’s had a bit of a dark past. He’s a fighting man, he’s probably killed in his past so that sort of temper, that dark side comes to the fore in extreme circumstances.”
While Anna tries to find proof of Bates’ innocence, the valet himself has to contemplate a life behind bars.
“He’s profoundly depressed most of the time. He does find some hope when he realises that Anna has not given up on him. But his mental state is one of extreme depression – as you’d expect from someone who’s been in a Victorian prison.”
Coyle knows of what he speaks – some of Bates’ prison scenes were filmed at Lincoln Castle, in a three-tiered preserved Victorian prison set within the castle walls.

Brendan Coyle: Downton Abbey; Me and Mr. Bates Posted on July 24, 2012 by Yvonne Condes (MOMS LA AND OC)
One of the very best perks for me of being a blogger in Los Angeles is the twice-yearly invitation to the PBS presentations at the Television Critics Association Press Tour. It’s really smart people getting together to talk about thoughtful important programming. They featured PBS News Coverage of the 2012 presidential election, the Drug War in Mexico, the new PBSKids show based on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. And of course there was Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey is my favorite show on television. Ever. It’s a period drama. It’s a soap opera. The people are beautiful and the clothes are even more beautiful. Everything about it is spectacular.
My unabashed love for the show led me to take this picture of me and Mr. Bates (I know that his name is actually Brendan Coyle). I also know that if I ever want to get another job as a journalist this photo will come back to haunt me, but I couldn’t help it.

'Downton Abbey' star dishes on season 3's 'spiky' barbs, Anna and Bates Dave M. Benett / By Randee Dawn (THE CLICKER)
Late last year, something happened to Joanne Froggatt for the first time: She was recognized. In America.
“I was in a deli in New York, and it was really weird for me!” remembered the woman who plays maid Anna on "Downton Abbey," one of the biggest cult sensations to leap across the pond in years. It happened during a break in the press junket for “Downton’s” second season last December, and she recalled, “I raced back to the hotel and told everyone!”
Froggatt’s Anna is, of course, half of the dynamic, romantic duo that also includes Mr. Bates. As viewers may remember, the valet has been incarcerated for allegedly killing his first wife – Anna is now his second. It’s one of the most popular stories on the PBS series, and part of that attraction comes from Anna's sweet disposition.
