Despite being cleared of his wife's murder at the end of series three, the valet is no longer the man he used to be.
"We see a darker and a more determined side to Bates than we’ve seen before in series four," said Brendan Coyle, who plays Lord Grantham's faithful servant.
And when asked by RadioTimes.com if he enjoyed unleashing his mean and moody side, the 49-year-old actor replied: "Yes it was" before adding: "And there’s even more in store for you this year..."
