Keeley Hawes: Who Are ‘The Durrells In Corfu’? Everything You Need To Know Before Season 2

Decider
By Meghan O'Keefe  @megsokay
Oct 13, 2017 at 3:00pm

I’ve been looking forward to this Sunday for weeks because it’s the Sunday that The Durrells in Corfu Season 2 debuts on PBS. I love The Durrells in Corfu with all my heart and soul — even if my co-workers tease me that when I say its name aloud I sound like I’m gargling salt water. After I binge-watched the whole first season earlier this year, I started telling everyone I could that it’s like Masterpiece‘s version of a smart, heart-warming sitcom like Parks and Recreation.

That’s not as bold a statement as it sounds. Like Parks and Recreation, The Durrells in Corfu is about a central ensemble cast of misfitted people. In this case, though, they aren’t co-workers; They’re family. And as in Parks and Recreation, the action all takes place in a quirky town full of outrageous characters. The “town” in question is the Greek isle of Corfu. The basic gist of the show is this: Harried widow Louisa Durrell (Keeley Hawes) decides to take her four struggling children to Corfu, where the weather’s beautiful and everything is cheap.

Season One saw the family overcoming poverty, language barriers, heartache, and a slapdash appendectomy with lots of wit (and even more wild animals). The first season is just six episodes long, each under an hour in length, and you can binge it on Prime Video ahead of the season season premiere on Sunday, October 15th. But if you don’t have time to catch up, here’s your quick guide to the Durrells themselves.

***WARNING: Spoilers for Season One of The Durrells in Corfu Ahead***

‘Poldark’ Season 3 Spoilers: Aidan Turner’s Ross, Eleanor Tomlinson’s Demelza Blissful Together During Filming in England; Marriage Intact Despite Elizabeth’s Pregnancy?

ECONO TIMES
Wednesday, February 15, 2017 8:50 AM

‘Poldark’ season 3 lead actors Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were recently spotted filming in Somerset county in England. The two looked blissful and in-love as on-screen married couple Ross and Demelza Poldak. The photographs suggested that Ross and Demelza’s marriage may stay intact despite Elizabeth’s shocking pregnancy.

According to Express.com, Turner’s Ross Poldark and Tomlinson’s Demelza Poldark looked the part of a blissful wedded couple while the lead actors were spotted filming the third season of BBC’s British-American drama television series in Somerset county in South West England.

Turner and Tomlinson were dressed head-to-toe in full 18th century garb in Wells, Somerset. They were spotted looking at each other lovingly while locking arms despite the fallout of their marriage in the previous season. Demelza caught Ross cheating on her with Elizabeth in season 2. She also came close to betraying Ross with Captain McNeil (Henry Garett) during a party.

Tomlinson admitted during a previous interview that Ross and Demelza will continue to face marital challenges in the upcoming season. Perhaps Elizabeth’s (Heida Reed) pregnancy and the real identity of the father of her child will take its toll on one of television’s most beloved couples.

The drama stars Finn Atkins (Eden Lake) as Charlotte, who shocked society with her edgy epic, Jane Eyre; Chloe Pirrie (War and Peace) as Emily, author of the darkly gothic and disturbing Wuthering Heights; and Charlie Murphy (Happy Valley) as Anne, whose penned the true-to-life love story The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Poldark' Star Aidan Turner's Ross Will Be Older Yet Not Wiser; New Characters' Inclusion Further Spices Up Things

March 6, 2017

Poldark" star Aidan Turner's character is expected to appear as reckless as he was in the previous two seasons. Meanwhile, the addition of some new characters in the cast is expected to make things more interesting in season 3.

Debbie Horsfield, the show's writer has teased that a richer plot with more drama, passion, feud, and conflict awaits viewers when the show returns for season 3. Though Turner's Ross is older now, Horsfield hinted that he is yet to be wiser.

The character is often at his reckless best, which creates trouble for him, as well as for those who are close to him. Horsfield also claimed that fans can expect to enjoy another rollercoaster ride but the stakes could be higher this time.

Digital Spy reported that Josh Whitehouse will be one of the new key characters to join in the upcoming season. Actor Hugh Armitage will be portraying the role in the new episodes. Josh is tipped to be an aristocrat and Ross will have consequences to face upon his arrival.

Chester actor Tom Hughes has been spotted outside Beverley Minster in Yorkshire filming the next series of ITV hit show Victoria.

The former Upton-by-Chester High School student was seen giggling with fellow actor Jenna Coleman, who plays the eponymous role, as crowds gathered to glimpse the stars during filming.

The couple, who are in an off-screen as well as on-screen relationship, star as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the drama which reeled in 7.7 million viewers last year.

Tom, the patron of city youth theatre Jigsaw, brought Jenna to Chester over the Christmas period, and they were spotted walking in the centre of town on Boxing Day.

One onlooker said: “Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes were arm in arm as Victoria and Prince Albert, there was quite a bit of chemistry between them, they were looking at each other and laughing and giggling.

“They were rehearsing for the scene and kept coming out of the Minster to get into a carriage outside.

EXCLUSIVE: Benedict Cumberbatch is reteaming with BBC One and Masterpiece for the adaptation of Ian McEwan’s award-winning 1987 novel The Child In Time. Cumberbatch will star in and executive produce the one-off 90-minute drama written by Stephen Butchard.

Cumberbatch, who is coming off the fourth season of BBC One/Masterpiece sleuthing series Sherlock, will play Stephen Lewis, a successful children’s book author whose daughter suddenly goes missing in the lyrical and heartbreaking exploration of love, loss and the power of things unseen.

The film will explore the dark territory of a marriage devastated by the loss of a child. Her absence sets Stephen and his wife on diverging paths as both struggle with an all-consuming grief. With the passage of time, a balance of sorts returns, until hope surfaces and triumphs unexpectedly.

Cumberbatch says, “I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me — profound, beautiful and very moving. Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty. We’re very excited to have Stephen Butchard’s subtle and brilliant adaptation, and in Julian Farino we have an extraordinary director who delivers emotional truth. I’m so proud The Child In Time will be the first drama produced by SunnyMarch TV

Poldark TV Review: Has Aiden Turner done for Poldark what Colin Firth did for Pride and Prejudice?

GLOUCESTERSHIRE ECHO
By Gloucestershire Echo  |  Posted: March 16, 201

The Ross Poldark Hair Flick™. Hypnotic. pic.twitter.com/ve3vpJ0R89

Poldark caught the British public's attention last week – and hunky star Aiden Turner appeared to have a lot to do with it. And he's probably going to keep the viewing figures high among a certain demographic after tonight's bit of skinny-dipping off the Cornish coast. It brought to mind Colin Firth's wet-shirt stint as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice back in the 1990s.

Reheating an old 1970s classic can be risky, but it seems as if bringing Poldark back has paid off for the BBC with women swooning and men seeming to enjoy the old-fashioned nature of the 18th century drama.

For its second episode on Sunday on BBC One, the question was whether Poldark will cement its place in the viewing schedule of the public, or whether people's interest would wane.

Judging by the Twitter reaction, it's probably got another series at least to come.

As we know from last week, poor old Ross Poldark (Turner, seen recently in The Hobbit trilogy and before that in the BBC's Being Human) has returned to Cornwall in 1783 from fighting in the American War of Independence to a rather flat homecoming.

His dad is dead and his lover Elizabeth (Heida Reed) is engaged to his drippy cousin Francis (Kyle Soller).

His family's old Cornish tin mine is in rack and ruin and it all looks as if he would be better heading off to London, as suggested by his uncle Charles Poldark (the late Warren Clarke)

But as chance would have it, a young 'child' he rescues from a dog-fight gone wrong, turns out to be the rather fetching (and very much a woman) pouty Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson).

Cue the setting up of a love triangle between heart-broken Ross being intrigued by wild Demelza while prim Elizabeth is wed to Francis but clearly still in love with her ex, who she had feared dead.

So far, so wearingly predictable - even if it is all set against beautiful scenery with the wind gently blowing through the actors' hair.

And in the second episode, last week's strands were picked up.

Q. How do you know Ross Poldark has entered the room? A. The ladies start doing this…

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
BY JAMES HIBBERD • @JAMESHIBBERD
March 16, 2015

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

'Masterpiece' enlists Sherlock author

Orlando Sentinel
By Hal Boedeker
Staff writer
January 19, 2015

Good news for "Doc Martin" fans.

Martin Clunes, star of that series, will play Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in "Arthur & George," a series from PBS' "Masterpiece" later this year.

"Masterpiece" announced new offerings Monday at the Television Critics Association meeting in Pasadena, Calif.

"How perfect that 'Arthur & George' will air on PBS, as public television has been such a wonderful home to 'Doc Martin,' "  Clunes said in a statement. "I'm sure that our new series will be a treat for 'Doc Martin' fans, and for everyone who enjoys a terrific drama."

The three-part "Arthur & George" is based on Julian Barnes' novel about a half-Indian son of a vicar. Doyle investigates whether the vicar's son has been framed for a crime.

A modern-version of Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch has been a major hit for "Masterpiece."

"Masterpiece" also will present "Home Fires" about women living in a rural British village during World War II while the men are away fighting. The cast includes Samantha Bond, who plays Lady Rosamund Painswick on "Downton Abbey," and Francesca Annis of "Reckless."

"Masterpiece" executive producer Rebecca Eaton was taking a well-deserved victory lap as the show flourishes.

"For 'Masterpiece' to be the No. 1 show on PBS in its 44th year is historic,” she said in a statement. "We are proud of the work of our British partners and grateful to all of our American supporters."

"Masterpiece" scored a 3.6 national household rating (live+7) in 2014. That rating is up 80 percent from 2010 -- an astonishing figure as the TV universe fragments.

"Masterpiece," which is presented by WGBH Boston, has expanded to offer "Grantchester" at 10 p.m. Sundays after "Downton Abbey." That entertaining mystery with James Norton and Robson Green started this week.

And "Masterpiece" has potentially one of the year's biggest shows: "Wolf Hall," an adaptation of Hilary Mantel's novels, on April 5. Emmy-winner Damian Lewis ("Homefront") plays King Henry VIII, and Tony-winner Mark Rylance is Thomas Cromwell.

PBS had other drama plans, not related to "Masterpiece." Public television plans a six-episode drama about Civil War nurses. The show will film in Virginia air on Sundays starting in winter 2016.

Wolf Hall' actor Mark Rylance: 'My wife said the books were good, so I said yes'

SUNDAY EXPRESS
Published: 00:01, Sun, January 11, 2015
By DAVID STEPHENSON

TV, BBC, drama, period, Mark Rylance, David Stephenson

We love our period drama. A glimpse of the schedules, particularly during autumn and winter, reveals a surfeit of costume delights, from Downton Abbey to Call The Midwife, from The Musketeers to Channel 4’s soon-to-be-seen Indian Summers.

However, the quality can vary wildly and so can the attention to detail, with the viewers often wondering, given the modern language used in dialogue, whether they are actually watching a drama set, for instance, two centuries ago.

Worry ye not, viewer, about the quality on offer later this month in BBC2’s Wolf Hall. Adapted from the best-selling historical novels of Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, this six-part series about the political chicanery of the Tudor court raises the bar for its costume rivals.

It has one of the performances of the year from Mark Rylance, in the lead role of Thomas Cromwell. He is ably assisted by Damian Lewis, pictured, as Henry VIII, and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey. Not a regular TV face, Rylance is known for his striking performances in the theatre, and is a two-time Olivier Awards winner.

As the author Mantel herself points out, “Mark Rylance gives a mesmeric performance as Cromwell, its effect building through the series.”As lawyer to Wolsey, Mantel describes him as both “hero, and anti-hero”, which indeed he is, although by the close of episode one you will be rooting for Rylance’s Cromwell all the way.

Unlike many authors, who are often indifferent about TV adaptations, Mantel is inspired. She says: “It’s a privilege. It’s illuminating, exciting. It’s not, as people sometimes think, in any way odd or jarring. It seems to continue a natural process that goes on in the writer’s head. “As you write, you see and hear. To have the images transferred to the outside world, to hear the voices externally, is a kind of magic, but it’s also a logical step.”

The choice of director is inspired, too. To enhance the political intrigue of a Tudor royal household, Peter Kosminsky, whose work mostly includes factual dramas, has given the production an authentic, contemporary feel.

But where do you begin with two 500-page novels? “I guess it starts with Peter Straughan’s script,” says the director. “Many people have done incredible work on this show.

Many on it acknowledge that these are some of the best scripts they have ever read. They are the best I’ve read. I knew the books, but to turn that into six hours of TV is an extraordinary feat.”

The stories are about “revenge”, says Straughan. “It’s also there in the novels, but that’s the theme I decided to run with. Thomas sets out for revenge for the fall of Wolsey, and the drama is about the consequences that flow from that.”

Rylance hasn’t done a major TV lead since 2005’s excellent The Government Inspector, about tragic whistleblower Dr David Kelly, which was also directed by Kosminsky. Why return to TV? Rylance is breathtakingly honest. “My wife said the books were very good! And I liked working with Peter, and it was obviously a wonderful part.”

But what was it specifically about the role that drew him to it? “There can be few characters in literature that keep most of their judgments and thoughts to themselves. He doesn’t reveal it, or show very much. I expect a lot of people who have read the books will watch the show, so to manifest him in a way that wouldn’t limit their imaginations of what he was like, was quite a challenge. I also wanted him to be a real person.”

First picture of Martin Freeman in rehearsals for Richard III

God bless Martin Freeman and his jazzy dress sense. The Sherlock actor has been pictured for the first time rehearsing for his upcoming performance in Richard III and he certainly looked regal, dressed in a royal blue jacket.

The Sherlock actor is treading the boards from 1 July until 27 September as part of the second Trafalgar Transformed season, taking on the role of Shakespeare's ruthless monarch opposite co-star Gina McKee who will play Queen Elizabeth, mother of the Princes in the Tower.

Directed by Jamie Lloyd, tickets for the production range from £15 - £52.50 and can be found on the Trafalgar Transformed website (if you're lucky enough to get your hands on them).

Benedict Cumberbatch Spotted At French Open After Keira Knightley Reveals He Punched A Critic (PHOTOS)

Benedict Cumberbatch enjoys the French Open final (FameFlyNet)

In recent weeks he's been seen at the Monaco Grand Prix, and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and over the weekend Benedict Cumberbatch continued to make sure he balanced work with pleasure, by checking out the French Open.

The Sherlock star looked relatively low-key in fancy sunglasses and a dark blue polo shirt, but once the specs came off there was no mistaking him.

He wasn't the only famous face spotted amongst the crowd in Paris, as Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin, and a number of other French celebs were also in attendance.

Benedict may have looked all cool and casual at the game, but his pal Keira Knightley had revealed last week that he can spring into action when needs be.

The Love Actually actress said in an interview with Time that he actually punched a film critic in the arm for being mean about her.

"When I saw him [Benedict] again, I said, 'Did you punch a journalist?' and he was like, 'I f**king did!'

Keira Knightley: Benedict Cumberbatch Punched a Journalist in the Face for Me

ET MOVIES
By ANTOINETTE BUENO
June 05, 201

The notoriously reserved Keira Knightley, 29, covers Elle UK's July 2014 issue, in which she dishes about her close circle of friends, including her Atonement co-star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Just how close are the two?

Apparently, Benedict once "joke-punched" a journalist in the face for dissing Keira.

"When I saw him again, I said, 'Did you punch a journalist?' and he was like, ‘I f*cking did,'" Keira recalls to the magazine with a grin. "Everybody needs a friend like that."

Though one thing the pals probably won't be doing together?

Singing karaoke.

"I hate karaoke. Like, I really, really hate it. I have to be so drunk I’m nearly about to fall down before I sing in front of anybody. It just terrifies me," she admits. "But, also, among the people you go with, there will be somebody who secretly has an amazing voice, and you're just like, 'F*ck off.'"

The beautiful actress also admits to having surprising insecurities when it comes to being out and about in public.
