Has Sherlock got a new sidekick? Benedict Cumberbatch seen on set with four-legged friend

THE MIRROR
BY NATALIE CORNER
4 May, 2016

Sherlock 's squad might be growing if these set pictures are anything to go by.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch - who plays the titular character - was spotted filming new scenes for the next series of the drama alongside a dog.

The bloodhound looked very professional and calm as it was kept on a lead held by the Dr Strange star.

Benedict seemed thrilled to have the animal on set and spent time petting it in between takes.

Unfortunately we're going to have to wait until Christmas before we find out what role the four-legged best friend will have.

Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, was also on set alongside his co-star and spent time coo-ing over a baby.

It's not known whether the young tot was in scenes with John but according to Digital Spy the baby could play a big role.

Watson's wife Mary, played by Martin's actual wife Amanda Abbington, was pregnant in the last series so perhaps she gives birth.

Benedict Cumberbatch is back in his detective's overcoat as Sherlock Series 4 starts filming in Cardiff

It's been over two years since the last series of Sherlock, with fans treated to just one 90 minute New Year's Day special in the meanwhlie.

So no doubt self-confessed 'Cumberb**hes' will be counting down to until the release of the long-awaited Series 4, which has started shooting in Cardiff.

Leading man Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted back in the detective's familiar navy overcoat as he filmed scenes in South Wales.

Chic and cheerful! Benedict seemed in good spirits on the scene as he waved at the rest of the crew

'Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home.

'Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake.

'This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax.'

Mark has been teasing fans every few days on his Twitter account by posting photos of the back of the castmembers' heads, with Benedict, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington included.

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
BY JAMES HIBBERD • @JAMESHIBBERD
March 16, 2015

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington make pact to limit time apart

NEW MAGAZINE
January 2, 2015

Abbington insists she is determined to minimise the time she spends away from her partner of 14 years, and will even relocate to New Mexico and New York with the couple's two children, eight-year-old Joe and six-year-old Grace, while Freeman is filming a new movie with Tina Fey in the U.S. in 2015.

She tells You magazine, "Separation is the most difficult thing. It was tough while Martin was away in New Zealand for months filming the three Hobbit movies and bad again during the American TV series Fargo, which took him to Calgary

for five months solid. It's not just the heartbreak involved, it's also the danger that you'll reach a point of thinking. 'Oh, I can do this alone. Why are we together?'

"We've made a promise now to limit our time apart. Martin is in Lithuania for a month and that's doable, but next year he's filming The Taliban Shuffle with Tina Fey for several months in New Mexico and New York. So the kids and I will be going with him for at least part of the time. Yes, of course as actors we love to work, but we love each other and our family so much more."

'Sherlock' Co-Creator Tells Fans to Expect "Tragedy" in Season 4

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
10:24 PM PST 11/20/2014 by Abid Rahman

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has some bad news for fans of the hit BBC drama, telling them to "expect tragedy" during the forthcoming fourth season.

Speaking to the Radio Times on Thursday, Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the show, said, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes." He refused to reveal whether that meant the death of John Watson's wife, Mary, as happens in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

The show, which stars man-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Watson, has Freeman's real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, co-starring as Mary Watson. Freeman himself has speculated before that Mary would likely meet her end, telling the Daily Telegraph, “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. … So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

Not a twit: Martin Freeman's partner Amanda Abbington has banned him from Twiter and social media because she fears he would say something he would later regret

Sherlock star Martin Freeman  has been banned from Twitter – by partner Amanda Abbington.

Speaking to me at last week’s Hector And The Search For Happiness premiere, Amanda, 40, revealed she has barred the star from using social media because she fears he would be unable to resist sharing one too many contentious opinions.

‘He will never tweet,’ said Amanda, pictured left with Martin. ‘He would destroy his reputation.

'He’d say something he regrets. He says things he regrets every day at home and I say, “That, right there, is why you can’t do Twitter!”

'He is very vocal about stuff so we have to be careful.’

‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Air Date: Plus 10 Things To Know About Fourth Season

LATIN TIMES
By Susmita Baral | Jun 13 2014, 01:05PM EDT

The air date -- both U.S. and UK -- of "Sherlock" season 4 has not been revealed, but the current estimation is that te new season will air in 2016. Why? Each season thus far has been released with a two-year gap -- season one aired in 2010, Season 2 premiered in 2012, and the third season in 2014 -- and with season 3 having aired at the start of this year, it would make sense that the fourth season arrive in 2016.

It should be noted; however, that the show isn't intentionally seeking a pattern and that BBC has reportedly denied the rumors that Season 4 will return in 2016. In fact, RadioTimes reports, citing anonymous sources, that the new season of "Sherlock" could be airing as early as next year! “It will not be this year – but 2015 is very much the hope and expectation,” said the source, adding that production will take place at the start of 2015.

Until then, here are ten things you should know about season 4 of "Sherlock":

1. Moriarty could be alive. The last scene of "Sherlock" season 3 opened the door for Moriarty (the main villain from season 2) to be alive. The villain made his return across the digital screens of the world, which leaves his fate just as murky as the new season's premiere date. The character popped up in Season 3 -- he was scene in Sherlock's imagination -- but could Moriarty have faked his own death?

“I can’t really say what we’re doing with that, but there is no last-minute whim in this," said Steven Moffat to Vulture when asked about the new twist. "We’ve had what we’re going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season. Exactly what we’re going to do. I remember talking it through with Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty. Wait and see what’s going to happen.”

2. Watson will be a father. Mary Morstan wed Watson in season 3, and by the last episode, it was revealed that Morstan and Watson were expecting a baby. When the show returns to the screen, Mary would either have already given birth or she would be on the verge of it. Regardless of the minor details of when she pops out Baby Watson, one thing can be certain: Fans will see Watson, Morstan, and Holmes adjusting to a new member in their lives.

3. John and Mary will be interesting parents. In an interview with Vulture, actress Amanda Abbington revealed what kind of parents John and Mary would be.

"On the one hand, they’d probably be reckless because they’re both quite psychopathic," said Abbington. "But I think an assassin and an army doctor who loves trouble, I mean, that kid has got nothing to worry about. Screwed up mentally, of course, but if there’s any bullying on the playground, we’re covered."

4. Janine will be back. Think you saw the end of Mary's friend and Sherlock's temporary love interest, Janine? Nope! She'll be back and they'll be friends, according to Moffat.

"He likes her, though," the writer told IGN. "He'll see her again. They'll be pals. I loved Yasmine's performance as Janine -- she still likes him in the end. At some point, you know, if Sherlock Holmes has to go to a function and he needs a date, he'll phone her up. Now, he'll not expect her to say no. She'll be very cross with him, but she'll show up, and they'll have a good time. They will, because he likes her."

5. The third Holmes brother may appear. Sherlock Holmes has another brother, Sherrinford Holmes, according to some variations of short stories. Hardcore fans have long been speculating that the creative team of the show will introduce the third brother to add a new dimension to the hit series, and Moffat was cryptic about whether or not this brother will make an appearance in the next season.

6. A-list actor may be playing the third brother. There has been a great deal of online discussion about "Thor" and "Avengers" star Tom Hiddleston joining the cast of "Sherlock" as Benedict Cumberbatch's character's third brother. In a Q&A in Brazil, "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also happens to play Mycroft Holmes in the series, joked about the idea when assked if Hiddleston would be considered for the role.

"Tom would be wonderful in 'Sherlock,'" Gatiss says. "But he only does movies now. What can I say? I'll ask him if you like."

(Video Meet the Filmmaker interview) Sherlock boss Steven Moffat's son has full time actor career hopes after His Last Vow debut

MIRROR
Feb 05, 2014 15:47 By Mark Jefferies

oung Sherlock

Sherlock creator Steven Moffat's son Louis is planning to become a full time actor after landing a role in the hit series.

Louis Moffat played the young Sherlock in a few scenes filmed as flashbacks during His Last Vow, which saw Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes and Martin Freeman's Watson take on Lars Mikkelsen's blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen.

Asked if he had to audition for the role, Moffat said: “Yes and we did warn him that he probably wouldn't get it.”

Benedict then added: “I thought he was amazing, really really moving. It was great to share his first professional gig with him.

“He is auditioning for another role now, good luck Louis.”

Moffat and his wife Sue Vertue then told how they had insisted that he may struggle to land the part, as they had no say in if he got the job.

They also told him he had the wrong eye colour, but Louis responded by saying: “I can wear contact lenses.”

He went on to land the role and put in a great performance.

“Thankfully he did get the part, otherwise he would have packed his bags and moved out,” joked Moffat.

Benedict Cumberbatch Fans Not Disappointed During Meet the Filmmakers

LIBERTY VOICE

Benedict Cumberbatch Fans Not Disappointed During Meet The Filmmakers Event

Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch turned out to see him live in the flesh during a recent Meet the Filmmakers event in the Apple store on London’s Regent street. Creator of the hit BBC show Sherlock Steven Moffat revealed facts about the show, including the bombshell that fans may have to wait years to discover what is going on with Moriarty. Moffat and stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington also appeared.

Fans were  treated to news of a deleted scene from the third series of Sherlock that would have upped the bromance tension between lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson). During the hilarious stag night sequence, there was originally a scene of the pair at a gay club. Cumberbatch stated that his character has no idea where they were until a group of half-naked men wander past. Moffat defended the cut saying that the original stag scene was too long.

Freeman also informed fans that Benedict Cumberbatch had a lot of trouble getting the epic Best Man speech right. He stated that he and other crew members played charades and other games while Cumberbatch fretted on set. He quipped that the actor was having a nervous breakdown during the scene while everyone else relaxed. The Meet the Filmmakers Apple event was packed with fans, with many more disappointed that they could not get in. Those that were inside endured teasing by Moffat that they may have to wait “years” before the show revealed what is happening in the Moriarty saga. The final episode of the third season ends with a static image of Moriarty broadcast throughout London and the words “miss me?” Moffat quipped that Moriarty had shot himself through the head and was not coming back, but the series seems to suggest otherwise.  He has revealed in an interview with Collider.com that his plans for Moriarty are “the longest plan” that they have had.

Benedict Cumberbatch 'Sherlock' recap: My Best Friend's Wedding

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
By James Hibberd | Published Jan 26, 2014

sherlock (3099) Animated Gif on Giphy

Sherlock, as you've figured out by now, is a different show this season.

All the pieces are still there and it's still amazingly entertaining. But the storytelling emphasis has shifted, and that change signals decisions that could have ramifications beyond this episode. Producer Steven Moffat recently said that Sherlock is not a detective show but "a show about a detective." Which is very true ... this season ... but wasn't nearly as much the case the previous two seasons, when the weekly mystery was largely the focus of each episode.

During last week's premiere, the various mystery threads were shrugged off (Who kidnapped John? Eh, we'll deal with that later. There's a bomb? Yeah, but it's got an "Off" switch, so let's use that to prank John again). Now this week the crime-drama once again barely registers until the final third, while several beats mock the very sort of mysteries that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote. The writers have lately seemed bored by having to deliver what's supposed to be the show's framework. Like: When you have talents like Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, why waste them on the usual detective work of analyzing carpet fibers and quizzing potential suspects? The lack of mystery could be its own meta episode: "The Mystery of the Missing Mystery."

The second major move this year is the show is funnier than ever. "The Empty Hearse" was Sherlock's most comic episode and then this week "The Sign of Three" shot way past it. This episode is a comedy, a British rom-com; One Wedding and No Funeral.

Changing a show's format and tone is somewhat jarring. It's giving some critics something to snipe about. And yet...

Sherlock is pulling off this caper, so far. Because when you entertain at this high of a level, it's easy for viewers to ignore the whiplash and hang on for the ride. Watching Sherlock this season is like attending Watson's wedding and seeing this guy Holmes give his speech as the best man. To the crowd, the speech comes off to as self-indulgent and wildly tangential, he even insults them, and yet he ultimately wins them over because Sherlock -- the character and the show -- is totally charismatic and hits the right emotional buttons.

Sherlock season three, episode three: His Last Vow delivered a jaw-dropping final five minutes SPOILERS GALORE

METRO

Sherlock finale delivered jaw-dropping conclusion

Sherlock resorts to extreme measures to defeat blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen in the series finale, His Last Vow.

[Warning - major spoilers] Steven Moffat provides a fitting ending to series three, as a twisting, intrigue-filled plot sees the defeat of one nemesis followed by the return of another.

‘I’m not a hero, I’m a high-functioning sociopath’

The first two episodes of this third series have proven divisive among the show’s fans, as more humour and the introduction of Mary marked a shift from plot-driven stories to more relationship-based ones.

Now we know why Moffat and Mark Gatiss pursued this route. The lightness of the opening episodes was needed to offset the darkness of the finale. Yes, there are humorous moments, but none of the whimsy particularly evident in The Sign of Three.

Ultimately Sherlock’s final, shocking act is a product of his vow at the Watsons’ wedding to always be there for them. It’s an indication of the extent of his friendship that he does not hesitate to sacrifice himself for them – an emotional reaction which neither Mycroft nor the pre-fall Sherlock could have countenanced.

The power of information

In many ways, the creepy and charmless Magnussen is an even more chilling nemesis than Moriarty, both being mirror images of what Sherlock might have become.

From his position as a media mogul, he acquires compromising evidence on people, which gives him the power and wealth to gain even more information and therefore influence. That’s a notion which strikes a chord with modern-day concerns about surveillance and personal data.

By contrast, John finds his power by burning the USB drive containing details of Mary’s past. In doing so, he unburdens them both.

For Magnussen, knowledge is power. For John, the absence of knowledge is freedom.

Sherlock: His Last Vow – 11 spoiler-free finale teasers

METRO
Tim Liew
Friday 10 Jan 2014 10:18 am

Ahead of Sherlock’s series three finale, here’s a spoiler-free preview of 11 things to watch out for on Sunday evening.

1. Two adventures in one

His Last Vow draws on two of Conan Doyle’s original short stories.

The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton features a notorious and unpleasant blackmailer. His Last Bow is Holmes’ final case before he retires.

2. ‘Magnussen’, not ‘Milverton’

The bespectacled villain glimpsed fleetingly at the end of The Empty Hearse was named before the series as Charles Augustus Magnussen. He’s played by Lars Mikkelsen, star of Danish dramas Borgen and The Killing.

Like his literary counterpart Milverton, Magnussen is a notably unpleasant character. In the BBC trailer for this episode, a disgusted Sherlock declares, ‘I’ve dealt with murderers, psychopaths … none of them can turn my stomach like Charles Augustus Magnussen.’

3. A darker tone

There’s much less humour than in the first two episodes. His Last Vow is arguably the darkest and most intense episode of Sherlock ever.

4. Where’s Sherlock?

As the episode begins, John and Mary have not seen Sherlock for a while. He’s been keeping some unusual company in the meantime.

After joining the cast of Sherlock as John Watson's wife Mary Morstan, Amanda Abbington admits there’s one “infuriating” thing about working with her real-life partner Martin Freeman.

He probably embarrasses her? Teases her? Tells everyone what she’s really like at home…? Oh, wait. It’s nothing like that at all. He’s just good at learning lines.

“Working with Martin is a joy, it really is," says Abbington. "The infuriating thing about Martin is he will get his sides, his script, and he’ll say ‘right, go over it with me’. He’ll read it once, he’ll read it twice and then he’ll say ‘test me’ and he’ll know his lines verbatim.

Sherlock: 10 teasers for series 3, episode 2 'The Sign of Three'

DIGITAL SPY
By Emma Dibdin
Thursday, Jan 2 2014, 8:22am ES

Sherlock - series 3

1) The core of the episode is one extraordinarily long monologue: Sherlock's best man speech is interwoven around extended flashbacks, which fill in chunks of the six-month gap between 'The Empty Hearse' and the wedding day.

2) Sherlock has more than a few surprising extracurricular skills up his sleeve. One is napkin origami. Another recalls one of Moffat's best-loved episodes of Doctor Who.

3) "Either I've caught you in a compromising position, or you're working out again."

4) Remember Mrs Hudson's husband who was executed for double murder? We find out quite a bit more about him.

5) John's stag night is the funniest sequence in the show's history.

6) "Yeah, but am I a pretty lady?"

7) The whole episode is essentially a love letter to John Watson.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington are “delightful together” in Sherlock

these two…

There are many questions Sherlock fans want answered when the series returns on New Year’s Day. How did Sherlock managed that death-defying leap, for instance. How will he reveal to his friend John that he is not, in fact, dead? And how will John react to the news?

But the world doesn’t revolve around Sherlock (despite what he might think) and another thing viewers will be keeping a close eye on is the dynamic between Martin Freeman's John Watson and his new love interest Mary Morstan.

Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington plays the "sensible, quick-witted" Mary – and according to their co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, the two are "delightful" together.

“You were delightful with her. Very lovely, really lovely,” Cumberbatch told Freeman during a Q&A at the weekend, eliciting a huge “Aaaah!” from the audience.

Meanwhile, Freeman was keen to make clear that Abbington’s casting had not been the result of his own demands.

“It wasn't a John and Yoko thing where I said ‘I wan't my missus in this',” said Freeman. “I think [co-creator] Mark [Gatiss] and [producer] Sue [Vertue] had thought ‘Who would be a good Mary?’ And Amanda is a really good Mary.

Martin Freeman slams Sherlock trolls over Amanda Abbington abuse

DIGITAL SPY
By Tom Eames

Martin Freeman with his wife Amanda Abbington arriving for the 2013 National Television Awards at the O2 Arena, London.

Martin Freeman has criticized a minority of Sherlock fans who sent online threats to his long-time partner Amanda Abbington.

The actor - who plays John Watson on the BBC drama - said it was "ridiculous" that people tweeted abusive messages to Abbington after she was cast as love interest Mary Morstan.

He told Time Out: "To me, they're not fans of the show - they're fans of a show going on in their heads.

"Obviously I love Amanda and I want everyone to react positively to her; she plays a fantastic character and brings a hell of a lot to the third series."

Freeman also revealed his concern that the new series will be an anti-climax for viewers in regards to how Sherlock Holmes faked his death in the previous episode.

He said: "There's something slightly mundane in knowing the truth of a thing. It's like asking Derren Brown to explain one of the amazing things he does. When he tells you, you're likely to go, 'Oh, right, erm...' I still think it's going to be satisfying, though.

"Loads of people have gone to town on how they think it happened - and some of the theories have been quite close. We have some fun with that in the show."

Coming between Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch was "scary" : Sherlock's Amanda Abbington

RADIO TIMES
Susanna Lazarus
1:10 PM, 21 October 2013

When Sherlock returns to our screens in the coming months, its newest cast member may look familiar...

Amanda Abbington - the real-life partner of Martin Freeman - has confirmed she will play Mary Morstan, Dr Watson's fictional other half, when she appears in the third series of the BBC's detective drama. But when her casting was announced earlier this year, Abbington was subject to backlash from the show's ardent fanbase who have become rather attached to Freeman and co-star Benedict Cumberbatch's double act.

As series three inches closer, the Mr Selfridge actress has been talking about her experiences on set with Freeman and Cumberbatch, and the "scary" realisation that she would be coming between detective duo Sherlock and Watson...

"I remember doing a scene very early on with Martin and Ben, and I was standing in between them and I thought, 'I really have to up my game, this is proper'. They really bounce off each other," she told The Scotsman.

“When I was at the read-through, I remember watching them, and the chemistry between them is just amazing. They do have this beautiful relationship, so getting in between that – which is what Mary does, she becomes this kind of third wheel – was scary. Also, the fans love these two together, so I’m sure Mary won’t be particularly liked by them, but I hope that on the whole people really like her, because she’s a great character and she has some fantastic secrets.”

Abbington, who was recently on screens in BBC cop drama, Case Histories, also revealed that co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat wrote the part of Mary Morstan specifically for her:

“We were at Mark Gatiss’s house when The Hounds Of Baskerville first came on the telly," she recalled. "Afterwards they went into the kitchen and were sitting talking about the next series. I went in and sat with them. It had been mooted that I would be in it, might have a little part in it. They were talking about who might play Mary and I was like, ‘So, who are you thinking of?’ and they said ‘You’.”
