Benedict Cumberbatch 'to receive CBE' despite relatively short career

INDEPENDENT
HELEN NIANIAS   Thursday 11 June 2015

Benedict Cumberbatch is to be named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, according to reports.

Cumberbatch, who starred as Alan Turing in Oscar-nominated film The Imitation Game, is going to be awarded a CBE in the honours list released on Saturday, according to The Sun.

The paper reports that actor's honour has upset "insiders". Despite his acclaimed performances, some have apparently questioned whether 38-year-old Cumberbatch's career is advanced enough for the title.

Around half of the people nominated for the prestigious title are aged 60-80.

Exclusive: Benedict Cumberbatch Set for NBC's 'Red Nose Day'

ESQUIRE
BY MATT PATCHES

Benedict Cumberbatch

Clowns, rejoice: The plush schnozz is about to become Hollywood's fashion accessory of choice.

May 21 marks America's first "Red Nose Day," a live-entertainment event that recruits famous faces for a night of foolery and fundraising. Originating in the U.K., the annual escapade has raised more than $1 billion for charity over the last 30 years. NBC will air the first stateside "Red Nose Day," a three-hour circus of musical performances, sketch comedy, and new videos produced by Funny or Die. The shorts are often high-caliber wish fulfillment; March's U.K. show saw a James Bond-themed short film that paired Daniel Craig with Roger Moore.

Who should you expect at the show? Esquire can exclusively announce that Benedict Cumberbatch, Sir Ian McKellen, and Orlando Bloom will be on hand, lending acting services to whatever hair-brained schemes Funny or Die has cooking. Just because "Red Nose Day" is jumping the Atlantic doesn't mean the British aren't coming with.

Joining the trio on "Red Nose Day" are the previously announced Will Ferrell, Jack Black, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Michelle Rodriguez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Smith, John Legend, Matt Lauer, Carson Daly, Bill and Melinda Gates, Nick Offerman, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pine, Jeff Goldblum, Billy Eichner, Martin Short, Laura Linney, Anna Kendrick, and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.

FROM GREAT BRITAIN'S RED NOSE DAY, March 13...

Benedict Cumberbatch made my heart stop

TELEGRAPH
By Gillian Reynolds
6:45AM BST 22 Apr 2015

Perfectly cast: Benedict Cumberbatch starred in Radio 4’s ‘My Dear Bessie’

Everyone loves Benedict Cumberbatch now but radio listeners loved him first, mostly for playing the Captain in John Finnemore’s Cabin Pressure, a wonderful Radio 4 comedy about a tiny airline played by a sterling ensemble (Roger Allam, Stephanie Cole, Cumberbatch and Finnemore), elegantly directed by David Tyler of independents Pozzitive. It began in 2008, ran four seasons with a two-part finale to round it off last Christmas, recorded on a night when Cumberbatch fans blocked the street outside the studio because, by that time, he was TV’s blockbusting Sherlock and a film star too.

He was an interesting choice for My Dear Bessie (Radio 4, Monday) because this role wasn’t heroic or comic but the voice of a real life soldier, Chris Barker, writing from Libya in 1943 to a girl, Bessie Moore (Louise Brealey), whom he knew but not well. She was a Morse code operator at the Foreign Office who was surprised to get his first letter, but glad. They’d both just been through broken romances and, surprisingly quickly, the words they exchanged began to smoulder on the page.

It takes sensitivity to bring such a relationship to believable life, to capture in voice alone the physicality of their responses to each other’s words. Cumberbatch’s slightly Cockney Chris and Brealey’s shy but sharp Bessie did it beautifully. When he proposed, by letter, and she replied that they hadn’t even met since the letters began, my heart stopped. But not for long. Because they did get married, if kept apart by the war just a bit longer, and stayed married for 58 years. Bessie died in 2004, Chris the next year. Their granddaughter opened the blue box that held their letters in 2008. Simon Garfield compiled them into a dialogue, Sara Davies adapted it for radio and Gemma Jenkins, the producer, found the perfect cast. I can still hear their voices.

Cumberbatch, aka China's "gay erotic god", also appeared at a car-testing event in Shanghai on Saturday to promote the new vehicle, simply called the GTS in China.

The actor's most famous on-screen character has become known as "Curly Fu" among fans in the country, who last year appealed to UK Prime Minister David Cameron via Weibo in an attempt to get their beloved Sherlock back on the air after a long recess.

David Suchet on going in search of St Peter – the man behind the scripture

David Suchet on going in search of St Peter – the man behind the scripture

David Suchet is a devil for detail. Preparing for his defining role as Hercule Poirot, he built a personal dossier on his character – every mannerism from the detective’s mincing walk to his Belgian accent (a shade more guttural than standard French) was rooted in Agatha Christie’s original text. “As an actor I’m fascinated by what makes an individual tick.”

This week, as presenter of the two-part documentary In the Footsteps of St Peter, the master-researcher turns his profiling skills on the fisherman-apostle who, according to Christian tradition, established the Church of Rome.

On a journey from the quiet shores of Galilee to the gilded splendour of the Vatican, Suchet presents a portrait of St Peter that’s far removed from the usual iconography. We are accustomed to Peter the patriarch, a figure of authority jangling the keys of heaven, but the saint who emerges from Suchet’s research is a vital, impul- sive and conflicted personality.

“I’m not in search of a religion, I’m in search of a character,” says Suchet. “I’m looking at what motivated him. I’m not looking at Peter from a Westernised, sanitised point of view. I’m looking at a big, rugged, impetuous Jewish fisherman, a man full of doubts and failings, but also full of the desire to do the right thing. So I was hugely excited to go back to the Middle East, where it all began, to walk on that earth and smell the smells that Peter knew.”

And as with Poirot, it all comes back to the text. “Peter is the person Jesus talks to more than any other person in the New Testament. He’s also the only character in the Bible, apart from Jesus, who walks on water – and then he gets bad press because he sinks! And then of course he denies Christ, he pretends to the authorities that he has nothing to do with the friend he loves, and that’s just heartbreaking. But the letters Peter wrote – or more probably dictated because it’s likely he was illiterate – to people struggling with their faith are intensely moving. I think he’s terrific!”

Suchet’s engagement with Scripture is deeply personal. He converted to Christianity at the age of 40 in 1986, and last year completed a 80-hour audio recording of the entire Bible – “It’s one hell of a good read!” he says, slapping his knee for emphasis. But he’s not of an evangelising bent. In the Footsteps of St Peter is as much an argument for religious tolerance as it is an exploration of Christianity.

Richard III: Benedict Cumberbatch to read poem at the reinterment

LEICESTER MERCURY
By PA_Warzynski  |  Posted: March 24, 2015

Actor and proven descendant of Richard III Benedict Cumberbatch will read a poem at the king's reinterment on Thursday.

Cumberbatch, who will be playing Richard III in the BBC series The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, will read a work penned by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy.

The actor was recently identified as a third cousin, 16 times removed of King Richard lll.

Duffy was commissioned late last year by Leicester Cathedral, as plans for the services for the week were being discussed and drawn up.

The poem is entitled 'Richard' and it is described as "a meditation on the impact of his finding and on the legacy of his story".

The poet said: "It is a privilege to be involved, in a small way, in this unique event and to have seen the style and grace with which the City of Leicester has made history alive."

As his tomb will soon be revealed, the 14 line poem includes the phrase 'grant me the carving of my name', which is what has at last been achieved in the creation of the tomb in Leicester Cathedral.

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
BY JAMES HIBBERD • @JAMESHIBBERD
March 16, 2015

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Louise Brealey for Letters Live 2015

DIGITAL SPY
By Bea MitchellSaturday, Mar 7 2015, 8:49pm EST

Benedict Cumberbatch and his Sherlock co-star Louise Brealey will take part in the new series of Letters Live, celebrating literary correspondence over the centuries.

Inspired by the books Letters of Note, compiled by Shaun Usher, and To the Letter by Simon Garfield, Letters Live returns to London from March 31 until April 4.

Cumberbatch said: "Letters Live makes us pause and imagine the lives behind the letters read and the circumstances of their origin.

"It's a privilege to read this most ancient of communications live to an audience."

Brealey and Cumberbatch will be reading letters alongside various other performers from the stage, screen, music, art and literary worlds.

"Standing up there and speaking words written during the Second World War by Bessie Moore - words that were not meant to be spoken aloud even to her lover - is an electrifying privilege," said Brealey.

The letters include Gandhi's appeal to Hitler for calm on the eve of World War II and Virginia Woolf's suicide letter.

sherlocked poster

After the disappointment of it being postponed last year, Sherlock fans wanting to attend the first official show convention will be pleased to know that it was worth the wait as Benedict Cumberbatch himself will be in attendance and so there is no possible way for any of this to change, they have released a shiny new poster as way of a promise.

Sherlocked is due to take place at London’s Excel centre this April, 24th through to the 26th, and will feature all the usual thrills of a convention including talks and activities.

Bosses have confirmed that Benny, who plays the title role in the hit BBC detective series, will be there to sign autographs and meet with supporters.

Tickets for this exciting event start at just £29 for a one day pass. However, if you want your day to include an autograph from Cumberbatch then you will have to dig deep and shell out the whopping £595 for a platinum pass or £2995 for a VIP pass.

But even if you do that you aren’t completely guaranteed a signed photo of the star as these are being sold on a first come, first serve basis.

Don’t worry though, you can always console yourselves with an autograph from creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, producer Sue Vertue or production designer Arwel Jones, who will all be there too!

'Masterpiece' enlists Sherlock author

Orlando Sentinel
By Hal Boedeker
Staff writer
January 19, 2015

Good news for "Doc Martin" fans.

Martin Clunes, star of that series, will play Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in "Arthur & George," a series from PBS' "Masterpiece" later this year.

"Masterpiece" announced new offerings Monday at the Television Critics Association meeting in Pasadena, Calif.

"How perfect that 'Arthur & George' will air on PBS, as public television has been such a wonderful home to 'Doc Martin,' "  Clunes said in a statement. "I'm sure that our new series will be a treat for 'Doc Martin' fans, and for everyone who enjoys a terrific drama."

The three-part "Arthur & George" is based on Julian Barnes' novel about a half-Indian son of a vicar. Doyle investigates whether the vicar's son has been framed for a crime.

A modern-version of Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch has been a major hit for "Masterpiece."

"Masterpiece" also will present "Home Fires" about women living in a rural British village during World War II while the men are away fighting. The cast includes Samantha Bond, who plays Lady Rosamund Painswick on "Downton Abbey," and Francesca Annis of "Reckless."

"Masterpiece" executive producer Rebecca Eaton was taking a well-deserved victory lap as the show flourishes.

"For 'Masterpiece' to be the No. 1 show on PBS in its 44th year is historic,” she said in a statement. "We are proud of the work of our British partners and grateful to all of our American supporters."

"Masterpiece" scored a 3.6 national household rating (live+7) in 2014. That rating is up 80 percent from 2010 -- an astonishing figure as the TV universe fragments.

"Masterpiece," which is presented by WGBH Boston, has expanded to offer "Grantchester" at 10 p.m. Sundays after "Downton Abbey." That entertaining mystery with James Norton and Robson Green started this week.

And "Masterpiece" has potentially one of the year's biggest shows: "Wolf Hall," an adaptation of Hilary Mantel's novels, on April 5. Emmy-winner Damian Lewis ("Homefront") plays King Henry VIII, and Tony-winner Mark Rylance is Thomas Cromwell.

PBS had other drama plans, not related to "Masterpiece." Public television plans a six-episode drama about Civil War nurses. The show will film in Virginia air on Sundays starting in winter 2016.

Inside Benedict Cumberbatch's New Superhero Role as Doctor Strange

ABC
Dec 5, 2014, 11:20 AM ET
By MICHAEL ROTHMAN
Entertainment Reporter
 via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

PHOTO: Benedict Cumberbatch will star in "Doctor Strange" in the 2016 Marvel movie.

Marvel made it official last night, announcing that Benedict Cumberbatch, 38, would take on the role of "Doctor Strange" in the film due out on Nov. 4, 2016.

Doctor Stephen Strange discovers the world of magic and other dimensions following a terrible car accident, according to the official release.

The transition from "Sherlock" to "Strange" seems about as organic as can be and there's no question of Cumberbatch's acting chops. Plus, did you see him in "Star Trek Into Darkness" as Khan? The guy can kick some serious butt.

For average comic fans who don't know who this superhero is, it's time to get educated.

Strange first appeared in Marvel books back in the 1960s and his name partly came from the fact he first popped up in a series called "Strange Tales."

According to Marvel Wiki, Strange was a doctor, but that car accident mentioned above "severely damaged the nerves in his hands, ending his surgical career."

WILL ANDREW SCOTT'S ROLE IN JAMES BOND 'SPECTRE' DELAY 'SHERLOCK' SEASON 4? WE CERTAINLY HOPE NOT

BUSTLE
KADEEN GRIFFITHS @KADEENGRIFFITHS
8 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT

After months and months of anticipation, all your prayers have been answered. At an event in England Thursday morning, the title of the new James Bond film was revealed, not to mention the cast, the release date, and, most important of all, the kind of car that the titular spy would be driving. All should be seemingly well, right? Well, it would be if Sherlock star Andrew Scott wasn’t joining the Spectre cast. Sherlock fans will recognize Scott immediately as the deliciously evil, deliciously hammy — spoilers ahead — recently mysteriously resurrected Jim Moriarty. Since filming for the Sherlock special doesn’t even begin until January 2015, the question now becomes: is Scott’s role in Spectre going to delay Sherlock Season 4?

From the start, I want to say no. After all, Martin Freeman has been filming The Hobbit movies and Benedict Cumberbatch has had time to film The Imitation Game — and they play the two male leads on Sherlock, so obviously their film careers have no affect on their ability to show up for filming. However, Spectre doesn’t come out until November 2015, with the fourth season of Sherlock to film “later in the year” — so Scott’s schedule is going to be pretty tight here.

At the end of Season 3, Sherlock was about to be exiled from England when he was immediately called back because Moriarty had hacked all of the television screens to announce his triumphant and inexplicable return, despite having shot himself in the head at the end of Season 2. From that, it should be assumed that Season 4 is going to be all Moriarty all the time — at least in so far as the actual threat that Sherlock Holmes will be dealing with for the three-episode run. However, that’s quite likely why Scott has time to film Spectre around his Sherlock schedule.

Benedict Cumberbatch Going to be a Dad; Fiancée Sophie Hunter Pregnant – Report

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES
By Anne Lu | December 2, 2014 8:16 PM EST

Benedict Cumberbatch will soon become a father, according to a new report. His fiancée Sophie Hunter is said to be pregnant with their first child.

Showbiz Spy reports that the 36-year-old opera playwright and director is already two months along. The British couple decided to keep the happy news to themselves first before they announce it to the public.

“Benedict is delighted,” the site’s source, who is apparently close to the couple but is not authorized to speak on their behalf, claimed. “She is only two months along, so they’re keen to keep it a secret until they’re past the three months stage. They will deny the pregnancy until they want to announce it. They’re very private.”

The 38-year-old “Sherlock” star and Hunter announced their engagement in a very traditional way, with a newspaper announcement early in November. They haven’t revealed a date set yet for their wedding, but the insider claimed that they would get married before their baby comes out.

“They plan to get married before the baby is born,” the insider continued. “They’re very traditional and don’t want their baby to be born out of wedlock.”

The dubious report did not include the date of their wedding.

Sherlock: His Last Vow Emmy Race

Thanks to “Sherlock’s” British broadcaster BBC One, we have our first look at stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the upcoming special episode, and the dynamic duo are apparently getting in touch with their iconic characters’ literary roots, looking downright Victorian in the new photo.

An earlier tweet — which included a photo of the special’s script — alerted fans that a preview of the one-off was forthcoming, promising a look at the two “as they’ll appear in the special,” which is set to air sometime in 2015. This note has led to a flurry of fan speculation regarding time-travel and/or a game of dress-up.

'Sherlock' Co-Creator Tells Fans to Expect "Tragedy" in Season 4

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
10:24 PM PST 11/20/2014 by Abid Rahman

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has some bad news for fans of the hit BBC drama, telling them to "expect tragedy" during the forthcoming fourth season.

Speaking to the Radio Times on Thursday, Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the show, said, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes." He refused to reveal whether that meant the death of John Watson's wife, Mary, as happens in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

The show, which stars man-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Watson, has Freeman's real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, co-starring as Mary Watson. Freeman himself has speculated before that Mary would likely meet her end, telling the Daily Telegraph, “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. … So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

'That chap' Benedict Cumberbatch is a 'superb' Alan Turing, former Bletchley Park girl says

 THE TELEGRAPH
By Georgia Graham, Political Correspondent
9:56AM GMT 14 Nov 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch is "absolutely superb" as Alan Turing but his real girlfriend was not a pretty as Keira Knightly, Baroness Trumpington has said.

Mr Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing in a new film following the pioneering code breaker and his team at Bletchley Park in a race against time to break the German Enigma code during the darkest days of World War II.

Baroness Trumpington, 92, who was born Jean Alys Barker and worked at Bletchley Park from 1940 onwards appeared unaware of Mr Cumberbatch's worldwide fame but said "the chap" who plays Mr Turing is "fantastic".

Although she praised Miss Knightly's acting she said she was far too pretty for the role of Joan Clarke, the one-time fiance of Mr Turing. The couple broke up after he told her that he was homosexual.

Mr Turing was a British mathematician who's work to break the enigma code is thought to have shortened the war by years. Ten years later he killed himself following a conviction for homosexuality. The film tracing his achievement, The Immitation Game, is released today.

Winston Churchill has said that Turing made the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany.

Despite his massively influential role in the war and unrivalled talent his life ended in tragedy. A year ago the Queen granted Turing a royal pardon overturning his 1952 conviction for homosexuality. He killed himself a year after that conviction.

Reviewing 'The Immitation Game' for Radio 4, Baroness Trumpington said: "I think the acting is absolutely superb, the chap who plays Turing is fantastic. I really do think, his girlfriend, if only she has been as ravishingly pretty as the one in the film was.

"The film fascinated me because I had no idea that Commander Denniston was so awful to Turing."

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter
LAURENT ZABULON/ABACA

It's no mystery that the surprise engagement of Sherlock Holmes actor Benedict Cumberbatch to Sophie Hunter on Wednesday would set tongues a-wagging – and some hearts a-breaking.

The emotions expressed on social media were far-reaching, and here are just some of the better reactions to the news that Cumberbatch is now off the market?

"There goes the Internet today," wrote Carrie in response to PEOPLE's announcement of his engagement. "Congrats!"

"And that's the sound of millions of teen hearts breaking," wrote THE_Jamie.

Others, like Southern Gal, were already defending new turf: "Everyone take 3 steps back from Tom Hiddleston because if he goes off the market too I'm done lol."

Twitter, of course, was a 140-character hotbed of hilarity and heartbreak.

"Republicans surge and Benedict Cumberbatch engaged," @sactotrixie Tweeted. "I'm going to bed."

Longtime Late Show with David Letterman producer @Justin_Stangel Tweeted, "Benedict
Cumberbatch is engaged! WTF???? Didn't he read any of my letters?????"

And on PEOPLE's Facebook page, Ninette Guin commented, "Lucky girl! LOVE him! With that voice I could listen to him read the phone book."

Kathryn McClung wrote, "*bursts into tears* life means nothing now," while Cathy Clary-Fligg was already looking ahead.

Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Sex & Sherlock

ELLEUK.COM
BY ANNABEL BROG
POSTED 29 WED OCTOBER

You may have heard that we photographed and interviewed Mr Cumberbatch for an ELLE cover recently. Not that we've mentioned it much, but word does spread... (you can read the full story here)

During the course of  the day, we fell to talking about sex. Specifically, Sherlock and sex. We find it intriguing that most right-thinking females (and males, for that matter) are very attracted to Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes, despite the fact that the character in the BBC adaptation is a virgin, a sociopath and, we think, likely to be a lousy lay if ever he were to relinquish said virginity.

Mr Cumberbatch disagrees. Strenuously. 'He knows bodies very well,' insists Benedict.  Then he proved it to us.

ELLE UK: A lot of women fancy Sherlock.

BC: Their problem, not mine.

ELLE UK: I do get it, he’s incredibly endearing, but…

BC: Will this tell me more about you than the answer will tell you about me?

ELLE UK: …I actually think he would be a terrible shag.

BC: Really? That’s terrible!

ELLE UK: I think he would be proficient, of course, but he would lack enthusiasm and he would find it distasteful.

BC: Ah, these are terrible stereotypes. And come on, he seduced Janine.

ELLE UK: But they didn’t have sex?

BC: Oh you’re right, very good, you spotted that.

ELLE UK: What do you think Sherlock would be like in bed? How would you play a love scene as Sherlock?

BC: Oooh… You know I’d get the, I’d probably test the latex, if it involved prophylactics, beforehand.

BC: I’d do a little experiment to do with durability, length, girth, and um, strength. And um, I would probably take a lot of vitamin supplements to make sure that I could perform, and had had my sleep, and probably not had many cigarettes. Or drink, for that matter. Not that he does drink.

ELLE UK: You see. Proficient, but lacking enthusiasm.

BC: Yeah, no wait for it. I would probably watch a lot of porn...

BC: But when I did it would be explosive.

Benedict Cumberbatch can't hide his astonishment as he comes face-to-face with his very own waxwork

Spot the difference: Benedict Cumberbatch was honoured with his very own waxwork at Madame Tussaud's in London this week and came face-to-face with it on The Graham Norton Show
