Matt Smith not heading to Broadchurch (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

28 JUNE 2013

Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall has quashed reports that Matt Smith may star in the second series of the crime drama.

The ITV murder mystery set in Devon - which starred David Tennant and Olivia Colman - was commissioned for a second series after it proved a massive hit - pulling in up to nine million viewers.

Chris has written a number of Doctor Who scripts, including the 2012 episodes The Power Of Three and Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, and it was claimed he was hoping to sign Matt up for the next Broadchurch now he is stepping down as the Time Lord at the end of the year.

But Chris took to Twitter, writing: "Ahem. That Mirror headline about me wanting to cast Matt Smith in Broadchurch? Not true. Quotes don't bear it out. Recycled old interview.

"I love Matt and his work - that's all I said. Never mentioned using him in Broadchurch. And he's off doing movies anyway. Slow news day!"
