Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt left star-struck by Ewan McGregor

ITV
August 11, 2014

Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt might be a big name in her own right, but the actress admits she still gets star-struck by other celebrities – and was left feeling out of place when she came face-to-face with Scottish star Ewan McGregor.

The actress, who plays ladies’ maid Anna Bates in the period drama, was left trying to act “really cool” when she and her husband James Cannon saw Ewan and his wife Eve while they were out one night.

Luckily it turned out that there was no need for Joanne to feel uncomfortable, because it turned out the Scots movie star is as just a big fan of hers.

“He walked right past and me and my husband were going 'Ooh, it's Ewan McGregor'. Then James said, 'Oh no, he's seen me looking at him!' and I was going 'Don't look, just act really cool',” Joanne told the Sunday Express magazine.

Joanne and James were left worried they had offended Ewan by staring at him when he started walking over to them – but instead he lavished the Downton Abbey star with praise.

Joanne explained: "I whispered to James, 'Do you think we've offended him?'

“Then Ewan went, 'I'm so sorry. Did you see us staring at you? We're massive Downton fans and our girls love the show.'

A STAR of Downton Abbey visited schoolchildren in Goring Heath.

Joanne Froggatt, who plays Anna Bates in the ITV period drama, spent Monday afternoon with pupils at the Oratory Preparatory School.

The actress held three hour-long sessions in which she played drama games, talked about her career and listened to the children give readings and talks.

The visit was designed to prepare the year 2 pupils for their forthcoming English Speaking Board junior introductory exam.

It was arranged by Froggatt’s best friend, Kate Walford, who teaches drama and dance at the school.

The actress, who grew up in North Yorkshire and now lives in Berkshire, said: “Now and again when I have a day off I pop along to different schools.

“I was really impressed by the children here. We did drama games and some of the children read for me and did show and tells. They were so much more advanced than I was expecting. Their speech was amazing.”
