Bumbershoot preview: 1 Reel Film Festival
Here are some highlights of Bumbershoot's 1 Reel Film Festival, which gets under way Friday, Sept. 2, at SIFF Cinema. The four-day event, which features about 100 short films, runs through Monday.
Special to The Seattle Times
Movie preview1 Reel Film Festival, sneak preview at 7:30 p.m. Friday, films run Saturday-Monday, SIFF Cinema, McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St., Seattle Center (206-324-9996 or www.siff.net).
Bumbershoot
Along with music, comedy, dance and so much else, Bumbershoot is about the art of the short film.
As in years past, this weekend's 16th edition of Bumbershoot's 1 Reel Film Festival — one of the best-attended short-format film fests in the U.S. and a perennial favorite in this city — gets under way with the help of Seattle International Film Festival curators.
The four-day event at SIFF Cinema begins Friday with an exclusive introduction to some of the 100 international films presented in 20 discrete programs on the full schedule. Check www.siff.net for details about acquiring an invitation.
Unlike last year, there are no feature-length films capping each day's schedule. The longest movies in any program are just under 30 minutes.
Admission to all film programs Saturday through Monday requires a Bumbershoot ticket (bumbershoot.strangertickets.com/home).
Monday
"Steve," directed by British actor Friend ("Jolene"), stars Colin Firth as the desperately needy neighbor of a quarrelsome couple (Keira Knightley and Tom Mison). It's always good to see Oscar-winner Firth let down his hair and bask in jittery neurosis. (3:30 p.m., The Unexpected)
