'Immortals' Director Tarsem Singh to Receive Cologne Film Prize

COLOGNE, Germany - Tarsem Singh, the Indian-born of The Cell, The Fall and upcoming epic Immortals starring Henry Cavill and Frieda Pinto, will receive the 2011 Cologne Film Prize for his life's work. The prize, which comes with at $34,000 (€25,000) bursary, honors a director who has made an extraordinary contribution to the "language and poetry of the audiovisual arts." Previous Cologne Film Prize winners include David Lynch, Paul Haggis and Belgian directing duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.
The German city of Cologne will present Tarsem with the honor on Sept. 30 as part of the awards ceremonies for the 2011 media confab the Cologne Conference.
Tarsem Singh has made his mark in particular with his stunning visual style, a skill he honed directing music videos including REM's Losing My Religion. But it was his two features - his 2000 debut The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez and The Fall in 2006 that made his reputation as a visual director with few equals. Immortals, a retelling of the Greek myth of Theseus and his battle with the immortal Titans, bows Nov. 11.
He is currently shooting Snow White for Relativity Media. The new take on the fairy tale stars Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as the evil queen.
