Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has confirmed that the show has not yet been renewed.

The hit drama, which is currently airing its second series in the UK, is widely expected to be picked up for a third run.

However, Fellowes has told The Daily Telegraph that he is not yet sure of the show's future.

"They haven't said they definitely want it yet," he said. "They are often quite slow at saying whether they want it or not."

Downton Abbey's executive producer Gareth Neame recently denied rumors that the show will end next year despite Fellowes's claims that he initially planned three series.

However, Fellowes explained that the show cannot go on forever, joking that it wouldn't be "very fair on the actors" to watch the characters reach their 60s.

"I can't imagine taking it much further than the Second World War," he said. "Periods after the war are fascinating because you have all the inventions and innovations that came about as part of the war effort. They were huge periods of industrial and social change."

Downton Abbey airs on Sundays at 9pm on ITV1 in the UK and is expected to return in January on PBS in the US.
