Could Sean Bean return to HBO’s Game of Thrones to reprise his role as Ned Stark? Based on what Bean had to say in this video, it sounds like there could be a possibility of that at happening. Read no further if you haven’t seen Season 1 of Game of Thrones, but plan to! Spoilers from last season ahead!
Bean spoke to MTV about his part in the show, which ended last season when that bratty Joffrey insisted on beheading his father’s former hand (Ned lost his head, not his hand... unless you believe that possession exists in the mind, in which case, Ned lost his whole body, including his hand when his head was chopped off, but that’s a philosophical debate for another time). The point is, Ned’s dead, baby, and while Game of Thrones is technically a fantasy story, the likelihood that he’ll return to life seems low, however, based on what Bean says in the video below (posted by MTV), there’s always the chance he’ll return in a flashback.
Unfortunately, the above comments don’t commit to anything. Whether there will be actual flashbacks of Ned Stark in the show, as there apparently are in the books, or whether he’ll be available an interested in doing them is unknown, but he sounds up for it.
I haven’t read beyond A Game of Thrones, but from what I understand, it’s best not to get too attached to some (most... any...) of the characters as Martin has a tendency to cut them loose (or so I hear), similarly to how he did Ned. I suppose flashbacks are all we’ll have to hope for when it comes to deceased characters going forward. Hopefully there will be some actual confirmation that Bean will be back on the show at some point. Meanwhile, we still have months to go before Game of Thrones returns to HBO for Season 2.
