Benedict Cumberbatch: BBC's Sherlock causes book sales of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to double (Metro)

Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock has been credited with reviving sales of the original detective novels written by Arthur Conan Doyle, with the number of books sold doubling.

The BBC's modern take on the detective series was a huge hit with viewers, with both the first and second seasons enjoying ratings well into the millions.

This increased interest in Holmes and Watson has led to more people discovering the detective's origins it seems, with sales of Arthur Conan Doyle original Sherlock novels written at the turn of the 20th century doubling.

Melanie Harris of Waterstone, said: 'The BBC's stunning adaptation has succeeded in making Holmes relevant to a new generation of readers.'
