'Sherlock' Season 5 Air Date, Spoilers: Will Benedict Cumberbatch And Martin Freeman Reprise Their Roles?

Many fans are now thrilled for the up-and-coming series Sherlock Season 5, which explains why it is one of the much-talked-about shows online. However, due to the lack of information about it, avid followers of the franchise are forced to create their theories and predictions.

EconoTimes reported that Sherlock Season 5 is very unlikely to premiere soon due to many personal and technical reasons. One major reason why the imminent fifth installment is not dropping any time soon is because of the tainted friendship of series main stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Followers of the two actors can recall how they previously shaded each other. Freeman voiced his aversion at fans' unrealistic expectations for the series and how they responded to the series' fourth installment. Cumberbatch did not like his co-star's statement and even described it as "pathetic." This, then, made fans speculate that Sherlock Season 5 might not happen at all.

Freeman, however, made it clear that he is very appreciative of the things the series had done to the fans, staff, and cast. Despite the alleged spat, showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are still interested in doing Sherlock Season 5.

"Well, we're never not talking to each other because we're friends! We hang out," Moffat told CinemaBlend when asked about the possibility of having Sherlock Season 5. "We've never said necessarily goodbye to Sherlock. No, we'll see. We'll see," the series creator added.

What most fans do not know is that Moffat and Gattis are, currently, doing a new series titled Dracula, which is a project in collaboration with BBC and Netflix. This, according to the same report, is also one of the major hindrances that prevent them from working on Sherlock Season 5.

“Sherlock” fans, do you think Benedict Cumberbatch deserves to win a second Emmy Award for playing genius detective Sherlock Holmes on the PBS program? Now that we know “Sherlock: The Lying Detective” is Cumberbatch’s official Emmy 2017 submission should he receive a nomination, is his performance good enough to win a bookend trophy following his jaw-dropping 2014 victory for “Sherlock: His Last Vow”? Vote in our poll below.

As in years past, “Sherlock” is once again trying its luck in the race for Best TV Movie by submitting only one of its three telefilms for Emmy consideration. The network feels confident that “The Lying Detective” is their potential winner this year — that’s the second installment from Season 4 that aired January 8. The case is a twisty one, as Sherlock is contacted by the daughter of an entrepreneur who she claims has confessed to murder, only she can’t remember the specific details because her father wiped her memory.

Joining Cumberbatch’s Sherlock as usual is Martin Freeman as supporting sidekick John Watson. Freeman also won an Emmy in 2014 for “Sherlock,” though awards pundits theorize he may have earned a few extra votes thanks to his starring role in “Fargo” that same year. The other eligible supporting cast members for the movie/miniseries Emmy races are Toby Jones as Culverton Smith, Mark Gatiss as Mycroft Holmes, Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan, and Sian Brooke as Elizabeth.

Last year “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” earned six nominations and went on to become the first installment to win the Emmy for Best TV Movie. Besides Cumberbatch’s Emmy victory in 2014, his other major claim to fame in the awards spotlight was when he earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for “The Imitation Game” (2014).

Sherlock fans rejoice! Fantastic Beasts has cast Martin Freeman as Dumbledore, and replaced Johnny Depp with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Oh what a day

When it was revealed Johnny Depp was to play Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series, some people were not happy. They felt it unethical to have Depp cast in the series, because of his personal life controversy.

When director David Yates’ commented on this matter, he did little to appease the critics. People felt he was brushing aside a troubling issue, “In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent.”

Heyman continues, “We’re thrilled to have Benedict join the team. Obviously we’re all huge fans of his work in Sherlock. He’s shown time and again how good he is at playing roles similar to that, so we’re really excited to see him bring that smart-guy awkwardness to Grindelwald.”

On the heels of this announcement, it’s also (finally) been revealed who will play a young Albus Dumbledore. In light of the new Grindelwald casting, this is perhaps the most unsurprising surprise to have ever surprised us: Martin Freeman will play the young Albus Dumbledore, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Gellert Grindelwald.

“In addition to the recasting of Grindelwald, we’re also happy to announce that fellow Sherlock star Martin Freeman is set to play Dumbledore,” Heyman states. “It was an obvious choice, really. With Benedict now in the series, we just had to add Martin as well. And knowing Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s history, we hope Johnlock shippers will be just as excited about this as we are.”

Sherlock Co-Creator Explains Why Show May Not Return For Season 5

Earlier this year, Sherlock fans were treated to a long-awaited gift. The clever BBC drama returned to televisions after years on hiatus, and the show’s fourth season was a trying one. The miniseries left behind both grief and joy in its wake, leaving fans to wonder whether a fifth season was in the works. But, according to one of the show’s co-creators, another season of Sherlock is not a sure thing.

Recently, Mark Gatiss commented on the future of Sherlock, and his words have left die-hards fans with lackluster hope. The writer and actor appeared at the WhatsOnStage Awards and explained why Sherlock may be done for good:

“I honestly don't know if there will be any more. It's incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin's diaries to align. And obviously we left it in a very happy place... if that's the end I'd be very happy where we left it,” Gatiss said.

Of course, it isn’t too surprising to learn the show’s stars are busy. Over the past years, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been Hollywood fixtures. The former is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Doctor Strange, and Freeman recently joined the franchise in Captain America: Civil War. The British stars keep busy schedules, and the team behind Sherlock has said coordinating their shoots were challenging.

Has Sherlock got a new sidekick? Benedict Cumberbatch seen on set with four-legged friend

Sherlock 's squad might be growing if these set pictures are anything to go by.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch - who plays the titular character - was spotted filming new scenes for the next series of the drama alongside a dog.

The bloodhound looked very professional and calm as it was kept on a lead held by the Dr Strange star.

Benedict seemed thrilled to have the animal on set and spent time petting it in between takes.

Unfortunately we're going to have to wait until Christmas before we find out what role the four-legged best friend will have.




Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, was also on set alongside his co-star and spent time coo-ing over a baby.

It's not known whether the young tot was in scenes with John but according to Digital Spy the baby could play a big role.

Watson's wife Mary, played by Martin's actual wife Amanda Abbington, was pregnant in the last series so perhaps she gives birth.

It's been over two years since the last series of Sherlock, with fans treated to just one 90 minute New Year's Day special in the meanwhlie.

So no doubt self-confessed 'Cumberb**hes' will be counting down to until the release of the long-awaited Series 4, which has started shooting in Cardiff.

Leading man Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted back in the detective's familiar navy overcoat as he filmed scenes in South Wales.



'Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home.

'Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake.

'This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax.'

Mark has been teasing fans every few days on his Twitter account by posting photos of the back of the castmembers' heads, with Benedict, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington included.

Ten Actors Who Played Sherlock Holmes Through History

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous literary character of the last 150 years, ever since he first appeared in the 1887 edition of Beeton’s Christmas Annual in “A Study in Scarlet”.  Holmes has been portrayed on stage, screen, and television over 250 times since his creation, with the first being William Gillette in a play written by himself and Holmes originator Arthur Conan Doyle.  He’s one of the most depicted characters in the world and that tends to attract some of the best in the acting profession.  Examine our own list of ten of the best Sherlock Holmes actors from the first to the most recent and let us know your own favorites in the comments.

Sherlock Holmes, a play written in four parts by Doyle and Gillette, was first performed in 1899 in New York City.  Doyle had previously tried his hand at writing a play, but little came of it until he was approached by Gillette, an American actor who even put on a deerstalker cap and a cape to convince the author to work with him.  After several films were made with various other actors in the role, Gillette tried his hand at a film adaptation of the play in 1916.  He would perform the role at least twice more in radio dramas.


BASIL RATHBONE

Appearing in his first Holmes film not long after Wortner, Rathbone starred in 1939’s adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles.  In fact, it was Rathbone’s success with the film in the United States that caused Wortner’s adaptation of the “Silver Blaze” to change its name to Murder at the Baskervilles for its American release in 1941 (despite having nothing to do with the Baskervilles).  Rathbone has played Sherlock Holmes the most times in films with a total of fifteen from 1939 to 1946.  He even made a posthumous cameo in Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective as the voice of Holmes, whose 221B Baker Street address also housed the animated protagonist.

Besides Wilmer, Brett is considered by many to be one of the best television actors to play Holmes, having done so in four series running for more than a decade from 1983 to 1994.  During that time, Brett also performed in a stage show titled The Secrets of Sherlock Holmes from 1988 to 1989.  Brett described Holmes as “the hardest part I have ever played—harder than Hamlet or Macbeth”, and despite fears of typecasting, he appeared 41 times as the detective before ill health caused him to retire from acting, passing away only months after his final episode aired.  Brett’s performance developed many personality ticks for the character from his laughter to his hand gestures as the actor wanted to bring more passion to what appeared to him to be an obsessive and depressive character.  Cementing his reputation as Holmes, Brett won a poll in 2014 of the best Holmes actors, beating out the next three, more-recent, entries.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

With Holmes back in film, it wasn’t long before the detective returned to television as well, this time with an adaptation brought into the present day courtesy of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.  Moffat was auditioning for Holmes and Doctor Who at the same time, and ended up casting two men who would become world-famous for their portrayals, Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Matt Smith as the Doctor. Alongside Martin Freeman as John Watson, Cumberbatch’s performance is the opposite of Downey’s, embracing the character’s nature as a “high-functioning sociopath”.  While Cumberbatch had been acting for some time before Sherlock, his portrayal has made him a household name and led to other projects such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Imitation Game, and this year’s Doctor Strange.

Many "Sherlock" fans are waiting for the hit TV series' return. "Sherlock" Season 4 is already in the works, but fans should still wait for months because "Sherlock" Season 4 will not be available until January 2017.

Deadline reported that three episodes are "Sherlock" Season 4 are in the works and these will surely entertain fans to bits because per the report, it promises "laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases." Are you excited?

Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock" Season 4 lead star is happy that they are finally working on the new season. He said that he is"genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew. I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait... though not for long. ... And it will be worth it."

Aside from this, "Sherlock" Season 4 will remain dark because per Zap2it, "terror and tragedy are looming" for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Will someone bid goodbye to the show? Mirror reported that "Sherlock" Season 4 will be hit by tragedies and that Mary may die. However, this is not confirmed yet as we can't tell how closely the show will follow Conan Doyle's book.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns to reprise the titular role of an active sociopath alongside Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson and Amanda Abbing as Mary. In "Sherlock" Season 4, the couple will be awaiting the arrival of their first baby.

"Sherlock" Season 4 co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis teased that their filming could be their final and it will be big time, saying, "This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax."

Benedict Cumberbatch is nesting.

The 38-year-old "Sherlock" star, whose wife, theater director Sophie Hunter, is pregnant, told the Mirror, "I am nesting for my family and just living a London life."

"I want to live as much a normal life as I can," he insisted.

According to Cumberbatch, it is possible to be both a famous actor and a good parent.

"I think there are plenty of good actors who are fathers," he said in a recent interview with ET Canada. "I mean, you only have to look at Daniel Day-Lewis as an example and a lot of my dear friends: Mark Strong, I mean, I could go on and on. I think what children do is enhance your life, they don't inhibit it. They don't limit it, they give you inspiration and depths of understanding of the human condition and what it is to be on this planet and what our purpose is, that goes well beyond anything a childless actor could hope for."

"I know, I can speak for many other friends of mine," Cumberbatch added. "Martin (Freeman) is another example who springs to mind, who managed to balance a home life and a work life. It's not easy, but then everyone is doing it, everyone I know who has children is managing it, so it's not impossible."

Sherlock exhibition: Thousands of fans turn up to get a glimpse of star of hit show Benedict Cumberbatch

The crowd surges, there’s an explosion of camera flashes and teenage girls scream their idol’s name.

Not Harry, or Zayn, or even Justin. The man they’re all here to see is Benedict Cumberbatch , star of BBC1’s cult hit Sherlock .

This is Sherlocked, the world’s first convention for fans of the show – which promises them a chance to meet their idol.

For the uninitiated, this level of hysteria for a 38-year-old actor may seem a mystery worthy of Holmes himself.

For the 6,000 self-styled Cumberbitches and Cumberboys who have turned up here, however, it’s elementary.



Many are dressed as their favourite cast member and are happy to shell out up to £45 for a photo with Sherlock himself.

Some cough up almost £3,000 for a VIP pass and think nothing of paying £30 for a scrap of wallpaper from the show’s set.

Others happily spend £500 for a pair of signed Sherlock and John Watson action figures and see nothing wrong with forking out £15 for a tea towel.

But since many have journeyed from one of the 200 countries where Sherlock is now broadcast, money is no object.

They simply want to submerge themselves in Cumberworld – and, as Benedict takes to the stage to address the convention, he seems ­genuinely thrilled to be joining them.

“Though I’ve got a microphone and I’m speaking to however many people, THIS is normal,” he beams, almost reassuring the crowd which is 80% female and 100% delirious.

“I’m not self-consciously walking through a shopping centre or an art gallery knowing that people are noticing me. I don’t think I’ll ever adjust to that.

“But being able to feel comfortable enough to speak to you now, to talk directly and honestly, it makes me feel like I’m the same person I was when all this began.”

His easy charisma seduces the audience during a question-and-answer session that is the highlight of the event.

As he delivers a couple of impressions – one of his dragon voice from The Hobbit movie, the other Chewbacca from Star Wars – even a couple of stray F-bombs can’t make Benedict’s devotees love him less.

But he may have upset a few audience members when he noted one special reason why Mr Cumberbatch and Mr Holmes are, in fact, two different people.

He says: “I don’t have the abilities that he does, I don’t have the same black curly hair he does, I don’t play the violin and I have a family on the way.”

Benedict, who wed theatre director Sophie Hunter, 37, in February, even teases his fans with a mention of his baby on the way later this year.

“I’m very excited,” he says, extracting a communal sigh from the audience. “I’m a bit busy at home at the moment, though not as busy as my wife, if you know what I mean.”

After the Q&A, besotted fans spend hours queuing just to get into another queue to get into yet another queue to have their photo taken with him.

Sherlock writer says Benedict Cumberbatch 'doesn't need' the show now

The co-creator and writer of BBC One's Sherlock has told Newsbeat that it's getting harder to persuade Benedict Cumberbatch to do the show.

Steven Moffat says it's because Benedict and Martin Freeman - who plays Watson - don't need it.
They both have successful movie careers which means their schedules are packed.

"They don't need Sherlock anymore. So we have to persuade them to do it - which is fair enough," he says.

Speaking at the BAFTA Television Awards nominees party in London last night Steven Moffat says he was surprised they signed up to a fourth series.

"They are very serious about it, they do love it very much," he says.

"I didn't think we actually thought we'd get a fourth series out of them."

But he revealed this year's Christmas special has already been recorded and series four is expected at some point in the future - when it's been filmed.

Steven Moffat also writes and produces Doctor Who and says it's usual to have to persuade actors to do shows.

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

Starter for Ten (2006)

Based on the novel by David Nicholls, this British comedy follows the trials and tribulations of student Brian Jackson (James McAvoy), a working class student in 1985 who finds himself navigating the campus of Bristol University.

He attempts to impress the object of his affections, Alice (Alice Eve), while finally succeeding in his lifelong ambition to win University Challenge.

Cumberbatch steals every scene he’s in, demonstrating a brilliant knack for comedy as the socially inept and uptight captain of the team, Patrick Watts.

Sherlock (2010-2016)

Widely considered to be his breakout role, this BBC series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss catapulted Cumberbatch into the mainstream, winning him legions of fans and launching him into the A-list.

Taking on the titular role, he’s joined by an equally brilliant Martin Freeman as the consulting detective’s best friend and colleague, Dr John Watson, with supporting turns from Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, Louise Brealey and Andrew Scott.

Despite hardcore fans hoping for Tom Hiddleston to be Benedict Cumberbatch's Best Man during his Valentine's Day wedding, that was not the case.

As it turns out, the "Avengers" star didn't hold Best Man duties although he did witness his friend's "magical" ceremony to his pregnant wife, Sophie Hunter, in the Isle Of Wight.

Some reports also suggested that Cumberbatch could have asked his "Sherlock" co-star Martin Freeman to be his right hand man but according to People Magazine, that also wasn't true. Cumberbatch's "The Hobbit" co-star did not even attend the nuptials.

So if Martin Freeman nor Tom Hiddleston weren't Benedict Cumberbatch's best man, who was?
People reported that the Internet sensation asked three friends to stand by him during the special day. None of them were famous except for one.

According to reports, he asked fellow British TV personality Robert Rinder to be one of his best men. Known as Judge Rinder, he is reportedly the UK's version of "Judge Judy."

Rinder is also a columnist for The Sun in addition to appearing in the ITV courtroom show.
Cumberbatch reportedly wanted to have genuine childhood friends with him when he tied the knot with his lovely wife on Feb. 14.

"They kept it pretty quiet. They were friends before either found fame," a source told People about the pair's friendship. They attended Manchester University together and kept their connection close ever since.

"The Imitation Game" star even officiated his friend's civil ceremony with long-time love Seth Cumming back in 2013.

Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly set to break a thousand hearts today with speculation of a Valentine’s Day wedding. He’s keeping his cards close to his chest, but here’s what we know so far.

Despite a veil of secrecy around the nuptials to rival any Sherlock episode, a few scraps of information about today’s wedding have put the media and Twitter into overdrive.

Pictures have emerged of the church where he and pregnant fiancée Sophie Hunter plan to say I Do on the Isle of Wight.

So here’s what we know so far:

– The happy couple are said to be planning on marrying on the Isle Of Wight in Mottistone.

–  Roads have been closed near the supposed venue of the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul.

– Vans with food, sculptures and flowers have been arriving at the expected reception venue and marquees have been erected.



– Security guards have been patrolling the area.

– The Sun have reported that Benedict’s Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, 43, will be best man.

– Celebrity friends said to be attending include Keira Knightley.

– The hotel nearest to the church is fully booked.

In a nod to both personal and British history, the couple wed in a church with deep ties to the bride’s family

On an English island once favored by Queen Victoria, Benedict Cumberbatchand Sophie Hunter wed in a tasteful affair fit for a titled resident of Downton Abbey.

On Saturday, the duo exchanged vows at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Mottistone, England. The location is a medieval church dating back to the 12th century.

Mottistone is located on the Isle of Wight, England’s largest island and the former home of famed poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as well as Queen Victoria, who built a summer residence there with her husband, Prince Albert.

"It’s a beautiful setting and very old English, very quaint and pretty," a local tells PEOPLE of the church where they swapped vows on Valentine’s Day. “The church is not that big … I would say maybe 100 people maximum would fit in there.”

The bride arrived in a Jaguar Mark VII, ditching the traditional Rolls Royce.

About 40 guests were seen arriving at the church Saturday along with several limousines around the Mottistone estate.

The couple did not use the church’s organist to play for the wedding. Locals confirmed that they didn’t use the church’s florist or a Mottistone baker.



Night before the Wedding

Reports that the The Imitation Game actor and Oscar nominee, 38, spent Friday evening at the Royal Yacht Squadron in nearby Cowes, a prestigious yacht club that counts Queen Elizabeth II as a patron. Prince Philip serves as the club’s admiral. The private-members club is a roughly 30 minute drive from the church.

"It’s a private members club and very private so I’m sure it was perfect for him," islander Ross Findon told PEOPLE.

The Reception

After the ceremony, the couple and their guests headed to a reception at Mottistone Manor, which is now owned by the country’s National Trust

.The 650-acre estate holds historical significance as it was first mentioned in Britain’s famed Domesday Book, a survey of England dating back to 1086. (Yes, you read that correctly.) The oldest parts of the home that currently stands on the estate date back to the 15th century.

"It’s a beautiful place and the gardens are very picturesque," Findon who spotted the groom in nearby Cowes just last weekend, tells PEOPLE. "There are sprawling lawns surrounding by roses, a nearby woodland with a stunning bluebell meadow that is really special. It’s a very romantic little spot."

A local tells PEOPLE Hunter’s family is related to the Nicholsons, who once owned Mottistone Manor and now live on the estate as tenants.

"Sophie is one of the Nicholsons, which is why they have chosen to have it here," the local source says. "The Nicholson family used to own the manor until they sold it to the National Trust … It’s a beautiful house."

Another local tells PEOPLE that Sophie’s great grandmother, also named Sophie, is the sister of first Lord Mottistone, General Jack Seely. Current tenant Lord Charles Nicholson has a house in Hampshire and not there all the time. His father used to live there permanently after he retired.

Yet in traditional British fashion, locals aren’t making a giant fuss about the couple’s hush-hush nuptials.

"Honestly people just aren’t that bothered about it, so there’s been no big ‘talk of the town’ or anything like that," says the source.

However, the source says locals have spotted “deliveries coming and going” on “lorries” (that’s trucks to us Americans).

"The manor is right opposite the church so it will be very private," the source adds, "which I’m sure was the intention."

Production for Sherlock resumed earlier this month as the stars of the hit BBC series got to work on a new episode of the popular show.

And Martin Freeman was pictured hard at work in Bristol as he filmed scenes as his character, Dr John Watson, on Friday afternoon.

The 43-year-old star was dressed in his full costume as he cut a dapper figure in a vintage three-piece suit which was worn underneath a dark brown coat.

The actor was seen talking to show writer and star Marc Gatiss BBC crew as they got to work on Kings Street filming against a large green screen.

His co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, was not on set during the day but the star was spotted as the show was being filmed outside Gloucestershire Cathedral.

Martin Freeman interview: The actor on hobbits, Cumbermania and his Nazi-hounding role in The Eichmann Show

These are strange, head-spinning days for doughty Martin Freeman.

We've met in a private room off the deserted restaurant of a boutique Bristol hotel to discuss the Holocaust. In The Eichmann Show, the 43-year-old Brit plays Milton Fruchtman, the American TV producer who persuaded the Israeli authorities to let cameras film the 1961 trial in Jerusalem of Adolf Eichmann, the high-ranking Nazi who was instrumental in implementing the so-called Final Solution that killed six million European Jews. Night after night the trial was a global media event, and beamed the horrors of the Holocaust into living rooms in 37 countries. True to context, and rightly, this new BBC drama does not stint on the use of newsreel footage from the concentration camps.

So Freeman and I sip tea from decorous china in a decorous hotel and find ourselves discussing the pulse-stopping pragmatism of the Nazis' industrial-scale death bureaucracy. I've seen the finished 90-minute drama; he hasn't. I relay to him the most chilling fact that I learnt from The Eichmann Show's broadcast of original court testimonies from survivors: that the Nazis spread the ashes of murdered Jews on the ground of the camps, so people wouldn't slip.



"Yeah, that rings a bell," he winces. "I went to see a camp when I was very young, called Sachsenhausen, which is not far outside Berlin, and I think there was a similar thing there that just completely rocked me. It was something to do with a running track… Just the banal inhumanity. All that stuff," he says briskly, rapping his knuckles on the table, "that's the really frightening stuff. When it's so easy to do, and so efficient."

A history and politics buff, as well as an assiduous watcher of quality drama, especially that featuring his peers and near-peers, Freeman cites a 2001 HBO/BBC film about the Wannsee Conference, the 1942 board meeting at which the Nazis planned the extermination of the Jews. "It's what Conspiracy does extremely well," he says of the drama that starred Kenneth Branagh as Reinhard Heydrich and Stanley Tucci as Eichmann, "because they're all quite attractive people; well, they're not all att-," he says without breath, backtracking hastily, cutting himself short. It's something Freeman does often, as his quick mind races against his quick tongue.

"But Branagh's character is an attractive, intelligent, smart person," he continues of the actor's Emmy-winning portrayal of senior SS officer Heydrich. "And if it wasn't for the context of what he was saying, you'd go, 'Yeah, I want to get behind this guy, he's pretty cool, he wants to get shit done,'" Freeman recounts briskly, clapping his hands. "And it's no one looking evil and it's no one looking dastardly. It's just, ah, admin. It's really, really frightening."

Certainly, while watching The Eichmann Show, Hannah Arendt's phrase about the "banality of evil" – coined by the writer while documenting the trial for The New Yorker to describe Eichmann's bland, implacable demeanour in the dock – feels as chillingly appropriate as ever.

Freeman is friendly, for sure, but also sharp, opinionated, and not afraid to bristle at lazy reductionism of his acting talents. It makes for an actor who's an engaging conversationalist and who is shot through with a shaft of steel – which also belies an oddly (and for him, aggravating) cuddly image. No, he's not an "everyman" actor; yes, he can do considerably more than Tim from The Office. A fact to which his current roster of roles forcefully attests.



Right now, he is armpit-deep in Dr Watson. Today is the end of day number three on the filming of the next instalment of Sherlock, the hit BBC drama attended – engulfed – by an unprecedented fan mania. Which, it transpires, actually bedevils the making of the show. (The leaking, already, of images of the suit worn by Dr Watson in this Christmas 2015 special – three-piece, brown, tweedy – is the least of the cast's worries.)

Fans gather for second day of Sherlock filming in Bristol

FANS gathered outside the Colston Hall today eager to get a glimpse of one of the stars of Sherlock on what appears to be its second day of filming in Bristol.

But they were left clinging on to nothing more than grainy images taken from distance on their phones of the actors who arrived in cars with blacked-out windows and were ushered inside under umbrellas.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted entering a side door leading to the cellars of the music venue.



Filming has started for on a one-off special, rumoured to be being prepared for Christmas.

Fans were tipped off by writer Mark Gattis on Monday who tweeted: “On my way West. It begins... #Sherlock.”

A small crowd of mostly teenage girls gathered from about 9am outside Colston Hall after film crews arrived yesterday.
