From Hobbit to hunchback - Martin Freeman set to appear in Shakespearean role

Sherlock and Hobbit star Martin Freeman will play his first Shakespearean role, Richard III, this summer

Sherlock and Hobbit star Martin Freeman will play his first Shakespearean role, Richard III, on the London stage this summer.

The actor has made a pact with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock to his Dr Watson) about treading the boards in plays by the Bard.

Cumberbatch will give his Hamlet at the Barbican — as this page was first to report — in August of 2015.

However, Freeman’s Machiavellian monarch will be in rehearsal by late May or early June of this year, and in performance by July.

Richard III will run through till September.

Freeman will be leading the first play in the second season for Jamie Lloyd Productions, which performs under the Trafalgar Transformed banner at the Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall.

Lloyd set up his company with Howard Panter and the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Tickets for Richard III, the first of four plays in the new season, are expected to go on sale in the next seven to ten days.

Director Lloyd is still casting other roles for Richard III.

Freeman was last on stage at the Royal Court in Bruce Norris’s powerful play Clybourne Park. His career has taken off like a rocket since the success of The Office and Sherlock on BBC television.

BBC Sherlock’s John Watson: What’s next for Martin Freeman?

Sherlock: What's next for Martin Freeman?

Martin Freeman’s casting in Fargo is a great next step in a post-Hobbit career. (Picture: PBS-Hartswood Films for the BBC)

It was a question we’d been wondering about for a little while, and even in the middle of last week were openly discussing amongst ourselves following a trawl of the Internet Movie Database – just what will Martin Freeman do next?

Ironically, a couple of days later we had our answer. He is the co-lead alongside Billy Bob Thornton in a ten part ‘limited series’ (that is, a series with no expectation of subsequent seasons) for US cable network FX, based on the 1996 Coen Brothers classic Fargo.

The Hobbit Trilogy has dominated Freeman’s life for much of the last three years, as it did for the actors of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy a decade ago.

For many of that cast, the next project they took was the crucial next step after such a consistent, and probably exhausting, run of acting work of playing the same character for such an extended length of time.

The Hobbit was of course different from the earlier trilogy, with scheduled breaks in production allowing Martin to fit in John Watson twice(!) for Sherlock series two and three, as well as work on John Hardwick’s Svengali and Edgar Wright’s The World’s End.

This new project ticks the boxes perfectly for Freeman, one of the nicest and most down to earth actors you could ever hope to meet.

We now have a new major question of course – what will he sound like with a Minnesota accent?

Martin Freeman: Sherlock success is like Beatlemania The reaction to the BBC1 detective drama makes its star feel like one of the Fab Four (RADIO TIMES)

Radio Times staff

11:25 AM, 29 April 2013

It’s rare these days to turn up at a press conference, awards ceremony or other event featuring the stars of Sherlock and not find a group of screaming fans out the front trying to catch a glimpse of their heroes. So when Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson in the BBC1 detective drama, likens the Sherlock phenomenon to Beatlemania, he has a point.

"The reaction to [the show] has been unlike any I've had to any other job I've done," said Freeman. "I've got some great reactions to things I'm very proud of, but I don't think any surpass Sherlock in terms of critical acclaim and numbers of people watching - and just a general feeling that you're in a mini Beatlemania."

Benedict Cumberbatch: More pictures from that great Reichenbach Fall (MAIL ON LINE) By HANNA FLINT

The body switch scenes came just a day after Benedict was seen back at St Bartholomew's Hospital for the first time ready to jump from the lofty heights again for the cameras.

There was much orchestration before Benedict leapt off the blue structure, as he was seen talking to crew members from above on a walkie talkie.

But then it was time for action, and the actor looked stoic as he mentally prepared himself for the stunt.

Martin Freeman: The Hobbit actor was named best hero, while Silver Linings Playbook continued its awards season domination with three wins (RADIO TIMES)

He may play the sidekick to BBC's dynamic detective Sherlock, but Martin Freeman's Hollywood breakthrough as The Hobbit's Bilbo Baggins has won him an MTV Movie Award for best action hero. Voted for by fans on social media sites Twitter and Instagram, the star of the Lord of the Rings prequel (who was absent from the Californian ceremony) scored an impressive 1,637,179 votes, beating off competition from Snow White and The Huntsman's Kristen Stewart, Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), and Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man in The Avengers.

Another absentee on the night was Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence who landed the coveted prize for best female performance for her role in award-winning rom-com Silver Linings Playbook. The film also triumphed in the best kiss and best male performance categories which were accepted by Bradley Cooper – although his co-star's no-show was the subject of controversy throughout the evening. Officially put down to a "scheduling conflict", it saw MTV facing a last minute scramble to rearrange a planned sketch with host Rebel Wilson, with even the network's website admitting to an "audibly upset room" in reaction to Lawrence's absence.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Amanda Abbington continue to film series three of Sherlock By HANNA FLINT and EMILY SHERIDAN (MAIL ON LINE)

From Bristol to Cheltenham, the Sherlock production continued on Tuesday after the Easter weekend.

Leading man Benedict Cumberbatch, 36, was his usual dapper self, wearing a navy suit and shirt while his sidekick Martin Freeman, 41, masked himself from the cold in a parka coat and thick scarf.

However his wife, Amanda Abbington, 39, looked like she was getting ready for a ball, with her blonde locks set in a hair net as she carried a black fur coat.

Despite their busy schedule, Benedict did take time out to pose with one lucky fan who waited for the actor with her dad.

Jenessa, from Wotton Under Edge, told the Gloucestershire Echo: 'We were the only people there and Ben was so lovely and devoted a whole bunch of time to us even though he had his car waiting.

'He spoke to my dad and I for about 10 minutes.'

What 'Elementary' Star Jonny Lee Miller Loves Most About His Co-Star Lucy Liu ENTERTAINMENT (LIFE AND STYLE)

“She always brings a great sense of humor,” he tells Emmy magazine — Lucy is the cover girl this month. “We do try to see a funny side of everything. Otherwise we’ll be freakin’ miserable.”

The 44-year-old actress’ love to have a good time may be what brought her to the new successful comedy in the first place.

“I know it sounds crazy, but I was really looking to do a comedy,” she says. “I had gotten a bunch of other offers to do some comedies. In the end, this was the best project for me because it was really well put together.”

Martin Freeman, Eddie Redmayne land MTV Movie Award nomination (RADIO TIMES)

Susanna Lazarus
11:26 AM, 06 March 2013

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Seth MacFarlane's Ted lead this year's nominations for the MTV Movie Awards 2013, with seven nods apiece, including the coveted prize for Movie of the Year.

Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar-winning role in Silver Linings Playbook has also been recognized  with the actress receiving nods for Best Kiss, Best Musical Moment, Best On-Screen Duo with Bradley Cooper and Best Scared-As-S**t Performance for House at the End of the Street.

But rivaling her in that final category - that's Best Scared-As-S**t Performance - is Sherlock's very own Martin Freeman, who has picked up a nomination for his portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It's the only category the film is listed for.

Other notable nominees are British actor Eddie Redmayne, who has been recognized for his Best Breakthrough Performance in Les Misérables. He will compete against nine-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild actress Quevenzhané Wallis, Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma and Rebel Wilson.

Martin Freeman: Sherlock's next episode sounds brilliant The Dr Watson actor reveals he's seen a rough plot outline of the series three opener - and he knows how Sherlock survives...(RADIO TIMES)

Susanna Lazarus
1:25 PM, 20 October 2012

Martin Freeman may have spent the best part of eighteen months filming Peter Jackson's The Hobbit in New Zealand, but that doesn't mean he's forgotton about Sherlock Holmes...

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com at Channel 4's Stand Up 2 Cancer event, Sherlock's Dr Watson revealed he had seen a "rough outline" of the first episode of series three. Although he is yet to see a written script, Freeman did say, "the first one sounds brilliant".

And if you're wondering how Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock can possibly have survived The Reichenbach Fall, Freeman is happy to drop a few hints. "Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss tell us bits about it so I know that all the clues were on screen. It's not going to be a cheat - everything that we saw on that final episode offers hints as to how he did it."

Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman triumph at Crime Thriller Awards BBC's crime drama wins three awards; Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and the coveted TV Dagger for Best Show (RADIO TIMES)

Terry Payne
10:20 AM, 19 October 2012

BBC drama Sherlock stole the honours at the Crime Thriller Awards in London last night. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman took home gongs for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor and the drama itself was awarded the coveted "TV Dagger" for top show.

A slightly embarrassed Cumberbatch made a third visit to the stage after Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was named Best Film. The only disappointment for Sherlock was Una Stubbs (Mrs Hudson) failing to win Best Supporting Actress, an award which went to Kelly Macdonald for her work as Margaret Schroeder on Boardwalk Empire.

Cumberbatch acknowledged the genius of authors Arthur Conan Doyle and John le Carré, but paid special tribute to Freeman: "He raises my game," he told the audience at the Grosvenor House Hotel. Whereas Freeman responded: "to do a show we love and to get prizes for it is an embarrasment of riches."

Jonny Lee Miller: Elementary does Sherlock right as series surprises as one of the best on TV The set-up and the cast had me fearing the show would be wholly annoying, but this Sherlock revamp somehow works Share 181 Email Emma Brockes guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 17 October 2012 15.31 EDT (GUARDIAN)

Seeing the posters around New York had been vaguely depressing: Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson in the new CBS series Elementary. The casting seemed obnoxious, not just for Watson-as-a-lady but for Miller, an actor not wholly rehabilitated from his association with the Sadie Frost-Jude Law Primrose Hill mafia of the mid-1990s and with a permanently petulant look on his face.

The idea of Lucy Liu, meanwhile, riled the purists as much for Americanizing as for feminizing Watson, particularly after the recent failure of another Scotland Yard to NYPD transplant, Prime Suspect. For sheer wrongness, it'd take the BBC casting Nigel Havers in a remake of Columbo to even begin to get back at the Americans.

The set-up for the show sounded tortuous, too: Miller's Sherlock Holmes is a modern-day Londoner living in New York, fresh out of rehab and acting as a "consultant" to the NYPD. Watson is a former surgeon kicked out of medicine after a malpractice suit and employed as Holmes' full-time sponsor by his wealthy father. They live together in an adorable brownstone and skip around town solving crimes.

It shouldn't work, it really shouldn't. But on the evidence of the first two shows – the third airs on Thursday night – it is one of the best things on network TV.

Jonny Lee Miller: 'Elementary': A solid Sherlock, my dear Watson - By Robert Bianco USA TODAY (DETROIT FREE PRESS)

Jonny Lee Miller stars as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu stars as Watson on the new television series "Elementary," premiering Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at 10 p.m. / NINO MUNOZ/CBS

Originality isn't the only element that counts in television.

Yes, it's important, which is why one wishes CBS's "Elementary" (***½ out of four; Thursday at 10 ET/PT) did not feel quite so much like what it is: CBS's attempt to replicate the success of Britain's Sherlock Holmes update, "Sherlock." Still, if the idea is borrowed, the approach "Elementary" takes is all its own, and lets the show stand on its own as one of fall's most promising new series.

Among the many good moves creator Robert Doherty has made, the smartest may have been casting charmer Jonny Lee Miller of "Eli Stone" (allowed here to use his real British accent) as Sherlock -- and then pairing him with a female Dr. Watson played by the equally fabulous Lucy Liu. Making Watson a beautiful woman adds an unexpected frisson to their relationship; making her a strong, smart woman shifts it even further toward a more equal partnership

LIFE OUTSIDE ‘SHERLOCK’: MARTIN FREEMAN By Brigid Brown | Posted on Thursday, September 20th, 2012 (ANGLOPHENIA)

Martin Freeman, BAFTA winner in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in BBC’s Sherlock, has mastered the modern day sidekick playing opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. He and Cumberbatch have both received 2012 Emmy nominations for their respective categories, which will be announced on Sunday, September 23.

Prior to joining the detective series, Freeman felt typecast as the lovelorn pushover as seen in Love Actually and Ricky Gervais‘s The Office but after appearing in over 20 films, and a variety of TV programs, he was bound to act his way out of any one stereotype.

And where has he landed current day? Oh, you know, this movie filmed in New Zealand that you may have heard of … The Hobbit. Alright, alright, we jest. This is obviously one of the biggest and much awaited films of the year, and to some, ever (!!). But, according to reports, it almost didn’t happen with Freeman initially turning down the Bilbo Baggins role because it overlapped with the production of Sherlock.

Martin Freeman was in the original The Office, Ricky Gervais' wonderful series that I could never watch because it was much to close to the truth - but, Martin had the role John Krasinski has in the American version.   They are both the same type too - very adorable

MATT SMITH ALMOST PLAYED WATSON TO BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH’S SHERLOCK by Jill Pantozzi (THE MARY SUE)

Since Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch both made their respective splashes in the UK and the world beyond, fans have felt the two actors needed to work together. (Something about chins and cheekbones or something.) They were at least in the same room together a few times, which had fandom reeling, but did you know Smith almost played the role of John Watson in BBC’s Sherlock? Read on to find out why it didn’t happen.

Smith and Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan recently did an interview with The Daily Mail in which they discussed their casting stories from the sci-fi show. I’ve heard versions of both before but Smith included a juicy new tidbit.

I nearly became Sherlock Holmes’s sidekick instead. Before Doctor Who was even discussed I went to see Steven Moffat, the co-creator of the BBC’s Sherlock, to test for the role of Doctor John Watson. Steven saw me more as a Sherlock Holmes than a Watson, but the main part had already gone to Benedict Cumberbatch. However, Steven saw something in me that made him think I could be right for the role of The Doctor.

Jonny Lee Miller: 'Sherlock's' Benedict Cumberbatch 'very supportive' of 'Elementary' By Drusilla Moorhouse July 29, 2012 4:31 PM ET Follow @drumoorhouse on Twitter | Google (ZAP 2 IT)

Benedict Cumberbatch's "Sherlock" is about to face some competition across the pond. But "Elementary," CBS' new fall procedural starring Jonny Lee Miller, is not a clone of the hit BBC series' own modern interpretation of the classic mysteries.

Miller confirms he spoke with Cumberbatch about playing the same iconic character of his former stage costar. (Coincidentally -- or not -- they alternated roles in Danny Boyle's stage production of "Frankenstein.") "I wanted to reassure him about how different this script was," he said. "Benedict's been very, very supportive."

At the TCA press tour, CBS head honcho Nina Tassler denied that the network developed "Elementary" in response to "Sherlock" creator Steven Moffat's refusal to hand over the adaptation rights. Instead, she insists, showrunner Rob Doherty "tapped into the DNA of this character in a way we'd never heard before," she said. "Listing all the incarnations that character has gone through over the years, I think there is plenty of room for another Holmes in our world."

Here are some other major ways "Elementary" differs from "Sherlock":

Review: Second season of BBC ‘Sherlock’ a suspenseful, smartly-written masterpiece By Ashley Bergner (THE KANSAN)

The greatest actors don’t just pretend to be a character — they actually become that character, so perfectly embodying a fictional persona that their performance transcends mere acting. And that’s exactly the kind of performance given by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC’s smartly-written, modern update of the famous Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

Cumberbatch truly is Sherlock Holmes, and he was a delight to watch in the first season of the BBC’s “Sherlock.” And the good news for fans is, the second season of the show (which just finished airing on PBS) also is excellent.

“Sherlock” takes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective and transplants him to modern-day London. Cumberbatch’s Holmes serves as a “consulting detective,” aided by his friend Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), who also blogs about Holmes’ adventures. The second season of the show updates several of Doyle’s most famous detective tales, having Holmes cross paths with the elusive femme fatale Irene Adler, investigate the “hounds of Baskerville,” and puzzle over Moriarty’s “final problem.”

However, the show doesn’t just take these classic stories and set them in the present day; script writers actually completely re-imagine the tales, taking cues from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original writings and coming up with entirely new mysteries (in other words, even if you’ve read the original Sherlock Holmes stories, you won’t necessarily be able to predict how the episodes will turn out).

In episode one, “A Scandal in Belgravia,” the British government is trying to gain control of compromising photos and other secretes Irene Adler has stored on her cell phone. In episode two, “The Hounds of Baskerville,” Holmes and Watson help a young man who claims to have been attacked by a gigantic hound. Though it is rumored a monstrous dog escaped from the Baskerville military research base, which may or may not be creating mutated creatures, what is actually going on may be something even stranger and more sinister. In the final episode, “The Reichenbach Fall,” Moriarty commits what is called “the crime of the century” and simultaneously breaks into the case where the Crown Jewels are kept, the vault at the Bank of England and the Pentonville Prison, and then mysteriously just allows himself to be caught. The episode culminates with a showdown between Holmes and Moriarty high atop a building: a confrontation neither one of them will walk away from unscathed.

I know it’s cliché to use the phrase “a part an actor was born to play,” but I truly think Cumberbatch was born to play Sherlock Holmes. He captures Holmes’ quirks and eccentricities and makes us care about the character, despite his flaws. He’s brilliant, but he has trouble interacting with people on a personal level.
