WATCH: Olivia Colman Unofficially Votes for David Tennant as the Next Prince Philip in ‘The Crown’

Anglophenia

BY BRIGID BROWN | 4 DAYS AGO

Olivia Colman is set to step in as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of The Crown, taking over for Claire Foy who is “reigning” over the series at the moment. This was all planned from the start, for a second actress to take on the later years of the Queen… a regeneration of sorts.

Speaking of which, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith currently portrays the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip. While it hasn’t been announced, his role will be swapped out, too. There’s a poll going on in the U.K., hosted by RadioTimes, and David Tennant is in the lead.

ou know, Tennant is also DW alum and he starred opposite Colman in BBC America’s Broadchurch.

She was chatting with the RadioTimes about starring in the forthcoming film Murder on the Orient Express (November 10) and the poll came up, with Colman responding in glee, “Oh can you imagine, how much fun!”

The Broadchurch star also threw in, “We’d never get anything done, we’d just chat all day. That would be heaven!”

Sherlock writer says Benedict Cumberbatch 'doesn't need' the show now

BBC

Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch

The co-creator and writer of BBC One's Sherlock has told Newsbeat that it's getting harder to persuade Benedict Cumberbatch to do the show.

Steven Moffat says it's because Benedict and Martin Freeman - who plays Watson - don't need it.
They both have successful movie careers which means their schedules are packed.

"They don't need Sherlock anymore. So we have to persuade them to do it - which is fair enough," he says.

Speaking at the BAFTA Television Awards nominees party in London last night Steven Moffat says he was surprised they signed up to a fourth series.

"They are very serious about it, they do love it very much," he says.

"I didn't think we actually thought we'd get a fourth series out of them."

But he revealed this year's Christmas special has already been recorded and series four is expected at some point in the future - when it's been filmed.

Steven Moffat also writes and produces Doctor Who and says it's usual to have to persuade actors to do shows.

The news that Benedict Cumberbatch is filming "something special" and highly secretive for BBC One and BBC Two is sure to make his fan base go into overdrive, states a Mirror report.

The actor, who left the hit sci-fi show at Christmas, was spotted with the pretty actress in London earlier this week, after apparently enjoying some one-on-one time with her at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Dressed casually, the pair looked happy and relaxed in each other's company as they spent the day amongst friend in the capital.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock is "exposing"

It was zero degrees outside New York’s Standard hotel but amidst the snow and slush, 30 or so girls patiently waited on the sidewalk on Thursday night.

It was not quite the frenzy that surrounds Benedict Cumberbatch in the UK when he attends a red carpet.

But I later learned some girls camped overnight to try to get a glimpse of him. To give you a clue of how crazy that is, it was below freezing and snowing most of Wednesday night.

This is a sure sign that Benedict is now becoming a big draw wherever he goes and the crowds will only get bigger in my opinion.

He flew into New York especially for a Bafta event where he held court for an hour and modestly talked through his career. Had they managed to get inside, those fans on the pavement may have been a little disappointed to hear no details of new Sherlock plots or plans.

But Benedict won over the 70 invited guests with natural charm and engaging conversation on how he has ended up being such a critically acclaimed and in-demand actor.

He started by humbly saying he was “very lucky” to be one of the actors in work and he tried to keep his projects as varied as possible. One pivotal moment in his life appears to have been THE stage production of After The Dance in 2010 in London.

He admitted the production was due to head to Broadway but after talking to the cast he turned down the opportunity to try other things. “I took a gamble and it paid off,” he recalled.

That is an understatement.

Benedict has since starred in big Hollywood movies like Star Trek, The Hobbit, 12 Years A Slave and TV’s Sherlock has also exploded as a worldwide smash hit. Had he been locked into a Broadway show it is doubtful he would have been in a position to grasp such opportunities. He is now one of Britain’s greatest exports in the acting world, rightly in huge demand.

Hearing him talk, I was also struck by huge similarities between him and former Doctor Who Matt Smith. Both are hugely intelligent, wonderful at holding an audience and actors with tremendous range.

And neither man is classically good looking in the Hollywood mould but is now loved by women.

“I have a long neck and a long face,” Benedict admitted with a laugh, before explaining he knew he was meant for period roles.

Both men also seem to struggle a little with the fame their roles have brought them.

Offered the role of Sherlock as he prepared to mount a scooter, Benedict’s initial reaction seemed to almost be fear.

“I said christ this could be really exposing, in a good way, but it is a very iconic character so there will be lots of focus on it.

“So I took a deep breath, cos there were other things hovering around, and this was a big step but it is good material so we did the pilot and the BBC loved it.”

Thank goodness he did. The show has gone on to be one of the BBC’s most loved dramas for decades.

Brace Yourself: Matt Smith Could Join Benedict Cumberbatch On Sherlock

Let's all speculate irrationally and draw a bunch of insane conclusions and make a fuckton of gifs about this random comment from Steven Moffat about possibly putting The Doctor on Sherlock!

Moffat, the Dr. Frankenstein of shows with British actors we all like to go completely nuts over, dropped this little bomb during a recent interview:

"I love working with Matt. He's a phenomenal actor. I'd jump at the chance to work with him again. I don't know how likely that is to be on the set of Sherlock. If there was a perfect part for him, there's no rule against it. We wouldn't want it to be stunt casting, because stunt casting doesn't work, so it would have to be just because he was overwhelmingly right for it."

London Year-End Roundup: Five Best Productions of 2013 (Matt Smith, Rupert Grint, Brendan Coyle, Rufus Sewell...)

London Year-End Roundup: Five Best Productions of 2013

American Psycho, Almeida Theatre
Critics were divided on the merits of Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik’s stage take on the era-defining Bret Easton Ellis novel, and who can blame them? One must look back to Sweeney Todd to find a musical that makes such a compelling case for putting psychosis center-stage. In Rupert Goold’s expert production, British TV name Matt Smith (Doctor Who) makes the gym-fit Patrick Bateman a charismatic killer of anyone’s dreams…or, make that nightmares. You have until February 1 to be drawn in—and then recoil—for yourself.

Mojo, Harold Pinter Theatre
Can a play that looked show-offy and posturing in one incarnation seem mournful and even profound the next? The answer is there to be savored in Mojo, running through February 8 at the Harold Pinter Theater (an apt locale given that Pinter himself appeared in Jez Butterworth’s 1997 film adaptation of gangster low-life in 1950s London). The cast—encompassing Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw and Downtown Abbey’s own Bates, Brendan Coyle—remains the starriest seen in London all year, and the peerless director is Ian Rickson.

Old Times, Harold Pinter Theatre
Two brilliant actresses, Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and Tony nominee Lia Williams, traded roles throughout the run of Ian Rickson’s quietly dazzling take on Harold Pinter’s 1971 play, which meant audiences got two chances to ponder the shimmering mysteries at the heart of the text. This was a big year on both sides of the Atlantic for the Nobel laureate, with Broadway’s starry No Man’s Land and Betrayal competing for attention, as well. But Rickson and his cast of three, including the divine Rufus Sewell, stood a league apart. Can they go to Broadway, as well, please?

David Tennant, Matt Smith: Emma Thompson reveals she would have loved to play a female Doctor Who

Whovians: Emma Thompson, David Tennant and Matt Smith on The Graham Norton Show

MIRROR
By Lydia Smith

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson revealed she would have jumped at the chance to play the Doctor in the long-running BBC series.

On tonight's The Graham Norton Show, Thompson denied speculation that she was offered the role that was given to The Thick of It actor Peter Capaldi.

Appearing alongside Matt Smith and David Tennant, she said: “I would have said yes, I’d have loved to have played Doctor Who.

"Maybe women need their own kind of new time travelling person?"

On the upcoming 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor, the tenth Doctor David Tennant and eleventh Time Lord Matt Smith remained tight-lipped about the plot.

They only revealed that Capaldi, who is set to play the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor, will not be in tomorrow's episode.

According to Matt: "Peter joins at Christmas."

David also added that he didn't need any persuading to appear in the special.

David Tennant on Doctor Who return: I didn’t want to step on Matt Smith’s toes

METRO

Tennant and Smith co-star in the anniversary special (Picture: BBC)

Former Doctor Who David Tennant has opened up about returning for the 50th anniversary episode of the show, saying it was difficult not to step on current Timelord Matt Smith’s toes.

Tennant has filmed scenes for the upcoming episode The Day Of The Doctor, which co-stars Smith and other old faces – and he says it was tricky not to be ‘presumptuous’.

‘You want to do it as well as you did before and that’s difficult because you’re trying to think five years back and make sure it feels the same but you’re also not wanting to step on anyone’s toes or be rather presumptuous,’ the actor told audiences gathered at a BFI screening of Doctor Who.

David Tennant, Matt Smith: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special - what we know so far

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special - what we know so far

RADIO TIMES
Jonathan Holmes
1:13 PM, 26 September 2013

It's called Day of the Doctor, and it's showing on the 23rd November 2013

The feature length episode title was officially revealed as The Day of the Doctor, which frankly doesn't give much away.

David Tennant and Billie Piper

Former Doctor David Tennant will reunite with former companion and unrequited love Rose (Billie Piper) for the special. They will team up with current Doctor and companion Matt Smith and Jenna Colman. The two Docs apparently love working with each other, proving that the Tardis is big enough for the both of them.

Baddies: Daleks and the Zygons

Come on, the Daleks were never going to miss the Doctor's big day, were they? The tin-pot dictators will return, along with an enemy we've hardly glimpsed since their first appearance almost 40 years ago: the creepy shape-shifting Zygons.

Goodies: UNIT

Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) – daughter of the legendary Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart and head of scientific research at the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce – will be returning to fight alongside the Doctor. Fans are hoping that means a rematch between the Zygons and UNIT, who last tangled in 1975's Terror of the Zygons.

Who is John Hurt?

Well, John Hurt is Who. As revealed at the end of the last series, John Hurt plays a previously unknown version of the Doctor. According to costume designer Howard Burden, he is a 'dark' Doctor who fits in between Paul McGann (who starred in the 1990s TV movie) and Christopher Eccleston. He said: “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”

Vote in the Anglo Fan Favorites Men of 2013 Finals: Hiddleston vs. Rickman

ANGLOPHENIA
By staff | Posted on August 22nd, 2013

We began last month with 32 Anglophile fan favorites, but when the dust finally settled, we are left with a battle of former champions — our 2011 victor Alan Rickman vs. 2012′s conqueror Tom Hiddleston. The continued supremacy of these two versatile actors, best-known for playing villains and antiheroes, is a testament to fan loyalty in a short-attention-span world. Other British stars may be greater household names and cash larger paychecks. but Hiddleston and Rickman inspire passion and devotion.

Hiddleston is a strong contender to repeat, with his army of fans even more organized and active this year. While we won’t see him in the next Avengers film, he’ll reprise his role as Loki in November’s Thor sequel The Dark World, and PBS viewers will see him in The Hollow Crown, adaptations of Shakespeare’s history plays, this September.

Rickman is not to be toyed with, however. The Rickmaniacs are fierce competitors, and it’s heartening to see this respected, Emmy-winning, twice Tony-nominated veteran, who was out in the quarterfinals last year, return to vie for the his second title. Still in demand after his decade-long run as Harry Potter‘s Severus Snape, he’s currently in cinemas worldwide as former President Ronald Reagan in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. And he has upcoming roles in Patrice Leconte‘s A Promise, opposite Rebecca Hall and Richard Madden, and as Hilly Kristal, founder of the New York punk-rock nightclub, in CBGB.

Vote in the Anglo Fan Favorites Tournament, Men of 2013: Quarterfinals

BBC AMERICA
By staff | Posted on August 8th, 2013

“It’s not going to get any easier from here on out, is it?” asked one Anglo reader on Twitter.

No. No, it’s not. Just take a look at this week’s matchups. There will be tears.

After Round 2′s lopsided victories — only two battles were decided with less than 25-point margins — the strongest have survived into the quarterfinals. The names are titanic: Cumberbatch. McKellen. Tennant. Rickman. Smith. Freeman. Morgan. Hiddleston. Any one of them would be an honorable Men’s Champion. But by this time next week, four of them will be gone from the competition.

New 'Doctor Who': It's Peter Capaldi

Capaldi
The Scottish-born actor becomes the 12th actor to play the British sci-fi icon.

Brian Truitt
USA TODAY
3 p.m. EDT August 4, 2013

And the sonic screwdriver goes to Peter Capaldi.

The Scottish actor was named the new star of the British sci-fi franchise Doctor Who on Sunday during a live broadcast on BBC America. He will replace the departing Matt Smith, whose time in the time-traveling police box the TARDIS ends later this year.

"It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer," said Capaldi, a lifelong fan of the show. "I haven't played Doctor Who since I was 9 on the playground."

Capaldi, 55, becomes the 12th man to play the Doctor since the cult show debuted in 1963 with star William Hartnell and the fourth Time Lord since executive producer Russell T Davies rebooted Doctor Who in 2005, following Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Smith.

Executive producer Steven Moffat had considered Capaldi when they were casting the 11th Doctor. "There comes a right time for the right person to play it," he said.

VOTE here in the BBC America, Anglopheia, TOURNAMENT OF BRITISH MEN 2013

 anglo-round2

Before anyone panics, Benedict Cumberbatch has made our Round of 16 in our tournament of Anglophile fan favorites. But the odds-on favorite to winning it all was less than one percentage point from being out in the first round, which would unquestionably have been the greatest upset in the three years we’ve run this feature.

Our takeaway? Never underestimate the enduring devotion of Richard Armitage fans, who have, each year, impressed us with their amazing mobilization in support of their hero. They almost pulled off the unthinkable in testing the Cumberbabes. So there’s no shame for Armitage in his defeat: he’ll be a formidable presence for years to come.
