Anyone who was concerned that the live action Beauty and the Beast movie would be a flop can stop worrying. The film notched the sixth-highest opening weekend of all-time by taking in over $174 in its first frame, and it's on pace to easily be Disney's most successful live action reboot yet. The film's success owes a lot to its impressive cast, especially Dan Stevens and Emma Watson, who sing and dance their way through the spectacle. But how much of it was real and how much was movie magic? Can Dan Stevens really sing?

Despite his face as the Beast being computer generated and performed through motion capture, that really is Stevens' voice you hear belting out the movie's famous tunes. The actor apparently had done a bit of singing in his youth, but it had been a long time since he had actually sung when the time came to train his voice for the film. "Singing was a relatively new thing to me," the 34-year-old told People. "I’d sung at school and when I was younger, but in my 20s I [hadn’t] sung as extensively so reengaging my voice, retraining the voice, was a big challenge." He may play a narcissistic, testosterone-fuelled baddie in Beauty and the Beast, but in real life, Luke Evans was bowled over by Emma Watson's "brilliant" portrayal of Belle as a "strong, 21st century woman".

The actor takes on brutish love rival Gaston in Disney's live-action adaptation, and speaking to Digital Spy on the set of Noel Clarke's upcoming thriller 10 x 10, he said: "I'm very proud of her achievement in the film - not just her singing ability, but how she's portrayed Belle, and how she's brought her into a 21st century, strong woman."

The Girl on the Train star has a background in musical theatre and explained that, while singing as Gaston wasn't easy, it was a "total joy" to accomplish.

"I wouldn't say it was easy singing as Gaston, but it was very enjoyable," he continued. "I love singing, and Gaston's songs are so great, and they're huge numbers, and so funny. It was just a total joy."

Meanwhile, Luke will star opposite True Detective's Kelly Reilly in Suzi Ewing's first feature-length film 10 x 10 - written by Brotherhood's Noel Clarke

J.K. Rowling does make the internet a fun place to be sometimes.

We all know that Matthew Lewis, the podgy and gawky boy who played Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies, has grown into a handsome and muscular young man. This is one of those transformations that you’d be tempted to call ‘magical,’ if that didn’t belittle all the hard work involved.

Nevertheless, when Matthew appeared on the cover of Attitude magazine this week in a pose that left almost nothing to the imagination (above the waist, at least), it proved to be a startling moment, not least for the woman who created his character in the first place.

Alan Rickman Ties the Knot in NYC with Partner of 50 Years

British actor Alan Rickman has been off the market for the past 50 years, living with his partner Rima Horton, an economist and politician, for 40 of them. They met when he was 19 and she was 18. But now it’s official: they’re hitched.

Rickman has been doing the rounds to talk about his recently released film A Little Chaos, and when chatting with a German newspaper he dropped a love bomb.

The newspaper Bild asked what the secret was behind sustaining a long-term relationship without tying the knot, and Rickman politely corrected the interviewer, saying, “We are married, just recently. It was great, because no one was there. After the wedding in New York we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate lunch.”

The wedding took place in NYC, where our office is located, and we weren’t invited?

We won’t take offense, as it appears to have been just the two of them (and at least one witness and someone to officiate the ceremony).

Alan Rickman Charms Audience During BAFTA Life In Pictures Event

August actor-director Alan Rickman effortlessly charmed audiences on a balmy London evening as he took a stroll down memory lane for the latest in BAFTA’s Life in Pictures series. Recalling a career that has seen him work with some of the film industry’s most talented and eclectic directors, including Neil Jordan, Alfonso Cuaron, Tim Burton, Ang Lee and the late Anthony Minghella, Rickman mused on his late start in the film business. “To be perfectly honest, having a film career is a bit of a surprise,” said the RADA alumni, who was in his 40s when he appeared in his first film. It didn’t hurt his career for that first film to be the era-defining Die Hard in 1988.



“I was extremely cheap,” quipped Rickman about what made the newbie thesp attractive to Die Hard producer Joel Silver, before remembering he almost turned the role down. “I read it and said, ‘What the hell is this? I’m not doing an action movie.” Thankfully for Rickman, and audiences, he was persuaded by friends to take that first role even though it might also have proven his last. Recalling how he had to perform his own stunt in the climactic fall from the top of the skyscraper — this was in the pre-CGI days — Rickman was given one afternoon’s training to prepare for the scene, “which was the very last shot — just in case.”

He also commended Die Hard for its ahead-of-its-time racial diversity. “Every single black character in that film was positive. So, 28 years ago, that was quite revolutionary and quietly so.”

The decade he spent working on the Harry Potter series, seven weeks a year for ten years as Snape, began with him having no idea where the initially ambiguous character was going. “People thought  I knew a lot but I didn’t. There were only 3 three books (when we started), so I was learning with the readers, going, ‘Oh, he’s still in it,” joked Rickman. “At first I thought I can’t play this. I don’t know who Snape is. I’m going to need to speak to her (J.K. Rowling)….she gave me one piece of information I promised to never share and I never did but it made me know I had to drive down two roads at the same time.”

Britain’s child labour laws also meant that there were tight limits on how many hours the triumvirate of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint could work, so when the camera was focused on Rickman, “in would come the very small adult actors aged 33 with a wig on their heads…That ain’t the back of Daniel’s head.”

Alan Rickman, British actor and director, says new film A Little Chaos draws 'modern parallels' for women

British actor and director Alan Rickman is widely known for his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films.

He has worked on both sides of the camera for his new film A Little Chaos, which tackles issues faced by women past and present.

Rickman describes A Little Chaos as human, true and timeless.

Set in 1682, the romantic drama follows Kate Winslet's character Sabine, a talented landscape designer chosen to build one of the main gardens at King Louis XIV's new palace at Versailles.

Sabine challenges gender and class barriers and becomes involved with the court's renowned landscape artist André Le Notre, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.

"When you ... watch it, I kind of hope that you will all forget about the period and see all sorts of modern parallels," Rickman told Jane Hutcheon on One Plus One.

Rickman reflects on women's roles in both eras, noting the writer's choice to take a period where women were merely decorative objects with no function.

"It's sad that the situation still persists, I mean, you still have women as decorative objects all over the media," he said.

Rickman admires the writing for allowing Schoenaerts' character to show his feminine side and Winslet's character to show her masculine side.

"And neither of them as actors is afraid of that. And I think that creates a great sexual tension between them," Rickman said.

Rickman is a feminist who has encountered strong women throughout his life, including his partner Rima Horton, who is a former Labour Party candidate and lecturer of economics.

"There's nothing wrong with a man being a feminist — I think it's to our mutual advantage," he said.

Rickman was born on a council estate in West London to Margaret Doreen Rose and Bernard Rickman in 1946, around five months after the end of World War II.

When Rickman was eight years old his father died of cancer, leaving his mother to seek out work to feed her family.

But he does not dwell on the hardship, harking back to the story of A Little Chaos when recalling his mother's strength.

"She was a tigress. She could do anything ... all those female things, sew cook and clean — she took care of those things without even thinking about it because she had been trained by her mother," he said.

12 Characters Benedict Cumberbatch Could Have Played In 'Harry Potter,' Because He Would Have Fit Right In At Hogwarts

It’s a thing now, guys: Benedict Cumberbatch is everywhere. He’s been all up in the buzzy bits of the Internet for a long while now, but his meme potential has never lessened. The Cumberbatch obsession may have begun with the fervent exchange of Sherlock gifs on Tumblr, but it’s evolved since then to the wider world, who has gleefully embracing all of the possible mashups his name allows (Cumberbaby! Blunderbatch!) in addition to mercilessly mocking him for being in absolutely everything. Lovingly, though, of course. Most recently, even former Luna Lovegood Evanna Lynch joined the Benedict Cumberbatch obsession, and tweeted an image of Cumberbatch alongside the most amazing caption known to man (at least, for today): ”Crumplehorned Snorkack is my favourite actor. #sorrynotsorry #thankstumblr.”

It was some classic, Cumberbatch-inspired humor (Cumberhumor?), but it also reminded me of another important Cumberissue: We haven’t talked nearly enough about who he should have played in Harry Potter.

I mean, it’s not that farfetched a question: If you squint, you can see half the population of Britain’s actors passing through the Harry Potter movies at one point or another, and yet Cumberbatch was nowhere to be found. This Cumberloss is understandable, but it also seems like a bit of a missed opportunity! So, with Lynch’s tweet as an excuse, let’s combine nostalgia for the first series of films and hope for an eventual reboot: Let’s fancast Benedict Cumberbatch in Harry Potter. Dude’s got range, the options are nearly endless!

Here are some characters he could have played:

Severus Snape

We already know about his Alan Rickman impression, and he’s actually a much more suitable age to play someone from the immediately-pre-Harry generation. Plus, you know…he could pull off intimidating and mysterious well. (However, I don’t know how I’d feel about being inexplicably attracted to Severus Snape.)

Dobby

He’s already proven his ability to play CGI’d characters, why not give him the chance to play this self-sacrificing house elf?

James Potter



A character who did not get nearly enough page- or screen-time. He’s got the dark hair, and could totally help inspire audience waterworks as a spirit guiding his son.

All Of the Marauders At Once

He could really play all of them. James? Yeah! Remus? Hell yeah! Sirius Black? With the right costuming! Peter? Sure, I guess! Give him a chance to really challenge himself with one Cumberbatch mega-movie extravaganza.

She's famous for her role as Downton Abbey's frosty matriarch but Dame Maggie Smith certainly met her match today when she was honoured by the Queen at Windsor Castle.

The 79-year-old, famed for her roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour and joins an illustrious group of recipients who include Professor Stephen Hawking and painter David Hockney.

She was presented with the award during an investiture at the Queen's Berkshire home but declined to speak to the press after the ceremony.



One of the most popular of Britain's actresses, Dame Maggie is synonymous with her roles as the Countess of Grantham in period drama Downton Abbey and Harry Potter's equally sharp-tongued Professor Minerva McGonagall.

But she has had an extensive career that stretches back to the 1950s, which began professionally at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952 and includes stints on Broadway.

Her stage performances have drawn critical acclaim and she has collected numerous awards for roles in plays such as Hedda Gabler, Three Sisters and Private Lives.

Sky ghost story to star Timothy Spall and Matthew Macfadyen

Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson and Matthew Macfadyen are to star in a new three-part ghost story for Sky Living.

The drama, called The Enfield Haunting, will be directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, whose credits include Danish drama The Killing.



Produced by Eleven Films, it is based on the book This House is Haunted, by Guy Lyon Playfair, which has been adapted by Joshua St Johnston.

Spall said described the script as “full of emotional texture”.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the excellent team Sky Living and Eleven Films have assembled,” he said.

Downton Abbey Spoilers – Guess who dies this series & Dame Maggie Smith tells Emma Watson to “get a grip”

Well this is certainly good news for fans of Downton Abbey – Bosses at the ITV show have declared that they will stop killing off major characters!

Of course in any TV series, especially dramas, you expect to witness a little heartache and loss, but what you don’t expect is two major characters being killed off in ridiculously similar circumstances within weeks of each other!

But, this is precisely what happened in Downton Abbey during its third series when Lady Sybil, the youngest daughter of the Earl and lady Grantham, died shortly after giving birth to her daughter.

The death was certainly unexpected and sent shock waves through the nation, so imagine our surprise when during the Christmas Day Special that very same year her brother in law Matthew Crawley was killed in a car accident on his way home from visiting his wife and new-born son in the hospital.

Of course the second death was out of the writers hands as Dan Stevens, the actor who played Matthew had decided to quit the role after his initial contract was up for renewal.

Death was the only option given Matthew’s place and standing in the great estate, 

which lead us to start panicking about more deaths, should more actors wish to leave.

But fear not as the powers that be have said that, so as not to risk losing viewers, they have put a ban on major character deaths in the future, so Lesley Nicol has revealed to The Daily Star newspaper!

Speaking of Dame Maggie Smith it would seem that she might have picked up a few of her character’s tough love habits as Emma Watson has revealed that she was told to “get a grip” by the legendary star.

According to Watson, who starred with her in all of the Harry Potter movies, it was Dame Maggie who helped her get over her fear of watching herself on screen, as she has been explaining in a recent interview with Hello magazine. Emma recalled that she told Dame Maggie that she didn’t know whether she could watch any of the scenes back, to which Maggie told her to “get a grip”.

Cate Blanchett, Emma Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch and more of Hollywood's biggest stars stepped out tonight to attend the Duke of Cambridge's Royal Marsden Hospital charity dinner at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England.

Blanchett stunned in a white, one-shoulder gown with jeweled earrings and her hair up. As for Watson, the 24-year-old looked like the epitome of class and elegance in a crisp white shirt tucked into a floor-length gray skirt. Watson completed her look with a dark red lip.

Domhnall Gleeson fuels rumours of reunion with father Brendan Gleeson on screen

IRISH actor Domhnall Gleeson has fuelled rumours that he may star alongside his father Brendan on the big screen, once again.

“I’ve got to keep my mouth shut for the moment, but maybe some time in the next year we might get working on something, that’d be fun,” the About Time leading-man revealed.

The pair previously worked together on Calvary, in which they both performed in front of the camera, and earlier in Noreen (2010), where Domhnall wrote and directed his father in his short film about two Gardaí.

Speaking to The Irish Post on the red carpet at London’s O2 on the first day of Sundance London, where he was promoting his new film Frank alongside Michael Fassbender and director Lenny Abrahamson, the enthusiastic star spoke of potential opportunities for his family to reunite for audiences in the near future.

“We’ll figure it out, my brother Brian is a tremendous actor also, so we’re working on it, we’ll see what we can come up with,” he added.

Brendan Gleeson: Film review: Calvary – essential viewing

“I FIRST tasted semen when I was seven years old,” are the first words of dialogue in John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary, as uttered by a disembodied voice to a discombobulated priest in a darkened church confessional.

“Certainly a startling opening line,” the priest responds, voicing the thoughts of the audience. “Is that supposed to be irony?” the disgruntled confessor asks. “I’m sorry,” the priest says, “let’s start again.”

This introductory exchange sets up the narrative style of McDonagh’s movie, fusing serious commentary with bone-dry satire.

McDonagh –a second-generation Irishman raised in central London – draws characters that spend most of the time conventionally acting out the absorbing drama, yet periodically collapse the artifice with deflating self-references.

They offer oblique winks to camera, breaking the fourth wall and waving across to the viewer. It’s a Brechtian, Beckettian, Bunuelian cocktail of forlorn hope, mordant humour and a cold moral vacuum. Yet all-the-while, it urges us not to have sleepless nights.

It’s also excellent, a cleverly-devised story (if a little thin on plot) featuring fine performances from top Irish talent. The superb Brendan Gleeson leads the cast as the embattled Fr James, vicar to an isolated coastal community, who is informed by one of his flock that he will kill him, “a week on Sunday,” in an abused victim’s revenge upon a depraved Catholic Church.

The man who makes this threat is known to Father James, though he remains a mystery to the audience until the climax.

“I’ll give you enough time to put your house in order,” he generously promises. The rest of the movie invites viewers to guess the identity of the killer among the townsfolk they meet, as the good father tends to his “pastoral duties”.

‘Frankenstein’ Release Date Pushed Back Nine Months: Good Sign or Bad? See Daniel Radcliffe With New Long Hair!

'Frankenstein' starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy has had its release date pushed back by nine months. Originally set to open on January 2015, the movie's premiere has been moved back to October 2nd, just before Halloween. Often times, when films' releases are pushed back so dramatically, one has to wonder whether there are major issues in the editing, casting, writing, etc. The time can be used for reshoots, rewrites, and even recasts. However, in the scenario with 'Frankenstein,' other factors may be at play.

In the world of Hollywood, January is the 'dumping ground' on the movie release calendar. This is where studios will place release dates for movies that they feel will not do very well. Therefore, if Fox is moving 'Frankenstein' to October, it is possible that they believe the movie will be a Halloween hit!
This new take on 'Frankenstein,' based on Mary Shelley's classic novel of the same name, is said to tell the story from the point of view of the mad scientist Dr. Frankenstein's assistant Igor (played by a long haired Daniel Radcliffe); the film focuses more on Igor's relationship with Dr Frankenstein (McAvoy) rather than on the monster itself. The film is directed by Paul McGuigan with Max Landis helming the screenplay.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Vs Tom Hiddleston for the Heart of Emma Watson!

Recently, Emma Watson has been linked to Tom Hiddleston. The "Thor" actor who plays the role of Loki in the movie was spotted with Watson during the GQ Men's awards. The two were seen on the red carpet and the Internet exploded, loving the two together. Tom Hiddleston is also an English gentleman and is certainly a perfect match for Watson.

However, Hiddleston seems to have a contender in Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The latter was seen with Watson at the 86th Academy Awards. Social media site, Twitter, exploded with excited fans when Gordon-Levitt and Watson arrived onstage, arm in arm to present an Oscar. Gordon-Levitt bowed in a gentlemanly curtsy to Watson and she returned the gesture.

Brendan Gleeson, son Domhnall, compete for IFTA's Best Actor prize

Beloved Irish actor Brendan Gleeson and his son Domhnall were both nominated for the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Film Thursday.

The elder Gleeson earned the nod for his work in "Calvary," while his offspring was nominated for his performance in "About Time." The actors previously co-starred in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and "Six Shooter."

Up for the Best Picture IFTA are "Byzantium," "Calvary," "Run & Jump," "The Sea" and "The Stag."

Four of the five best film nominees also get mentions for Best Script -- John Banville for "The Sea," Ailbhe Keogan for "Run & Jump," John Michael McDonagh for "Calvary," and the duo of John Butler and Peter McDonald for "The Stag."

Brendan Gleeson dedicates film role to Ireland’s ‘good’ priests

Actor Brendan Gleeson has dedicated his new movie role to Ireland’s good priests, the ones he said have been overlooked or even tarred by recent clerical abuse scandals.

Mr Gleeson, promoting ‘Calvary’ at the Berlin Film Festival, said he was motivated by the memory of a “particularly good Christian Brother in primary school ... Brother Pat Grogan, a beautiful man”.

‘Calvary’, already hailed by Sundance critics as Beckett-meets-Bresson, enthused Berlin audiences yesterday with one critic calling it a “wonderful, disturbing, sad movie”. It opens this year’s Jameson Dublin Film Festival.

“I think there have been a few false accusations of paedophilia, life-wrecking allegations, against good men amongst all the proper exposure of bad men,” said Mr Gleeson in Berlin yesterday. “Imagine being a good person who has given their life to doing good things, finding themselves wearing a uniform that has been besmirched. It must be horrible for anyone who commits to good to be reviled for doing so.”

Emma Watson made sure she had comfy shoes on her feet on Monday as she pounded the pavements of New York in search of a new apartment.

The 23-year-old British actress is on the hunt for new digs in Manhattan, and reportedly checked out one building on the Upper West Side.

The brand new condominium building currently has nine apartments available, including the penthouse with an asking price of $15.5 million.

The top floor condo comes with four en-suite bedrooms with walk-in closets, a large living and dining room, kitchen, pantry and office for the owner to enjoy.

The block was built in 1912, with the exterior unchanged since its completion 100 years ago, but it underwent a renovation in 2012 to dramatically change the entry, lobby, amenities and shared areas to incorporate modern design to the historic architecture.

The building comes with 24-hour white glove service, a fitness centre, children's playroom, and a multi-purpose function room for meetings, parties or movie screenings.
