Alan Rickman Charms Audience During BAFTA Life In Pictures Event

August actor-director Alan Rickman effortlessly charmed audiences on a balmy London evening as he took a stroll down memory lane for the latest in BAFTA’s Life in Pictures series. Recalling a career that has seen him work with some of the film industry’s most talented and eclectic directors, including Neil Jordan, Alfonso Cuaron, Tim Burton, Ang Lee and the late Anthony Minghella, Rickman mused on his late start in the film business. “To be perfectly honest, having a film career is a bit of a surprise,” said the RADA alumni, who was in his 40s when he appeared in his first film. It didn’t hurt his career for that first film to be the era-defining Die Hard in 1988.

“I was extremely cheap,” quipped Rickman about what made the newbie thesp attractive to Die Hard producer Joel Silver, before remembering he almost turned the role down. “I read it and said, ‘What the hell is this? I’m not doing an action movie.” Thankfully for Rickman, and audiences, he was persuaded by friends to take that first role even though it might also have proven his last. Recalling how he had to perform his own stunt in the climactic fall from the top of the skyscraper — this was in the pre-CGI days — Rickman was given one afternoon’s training to prepare for the scene, “which was the very last shot — just in case.”

He also commended Die Hard for its ahead-of-its-time racial diversity. “Every single black character in that film was positive. So, 28 years ago, that was quite revolutionary and quietly so.”

The decade he spent working on the Harry Potter series, seven weeks a year for ten years as Snape, began with him having no idea where the initially ambiguous character was going. “People thought  I knew a lot but I didn’t. There were only 3 three books (when we started), so I was learning with the readers, going, ‘Oh, he’s still in it,” joked Rickman. “At first I thought I can’t play this. I don’t know who Snape is. I’m going to need to speak to her (J.K. Rowling)….she gave me one piece of information I promised to never share and I never did but it made me know I had to drive down two roads at the same time.”

Britain’s child labour laws also meant that there were tight limits on how many hours the triumvirate of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint could work, so when the camera was focused on Rickman, “in would come the very small adult actors aged 33 with a wig on their heads…That ain’t the back of Daniel’s head.”

Born in Hammersmith, England, Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was born into a middle class family.

Alan Rickman - Die Hard Anniversary - Bad to the Bone

BY: FRANK DIGIACOMO

You really don't need to watch the clip to understand this about the franchise: Alan Rickman, who played  deliciously contemptuous Hans Gruber n the first film, remains, far and away, the best Die Hard baddie of the franchise. His simpering imitation of an American hostage when McClane first encounters him is a thing of enduring beauty.

Why Rickman hasn't been made a Bond villain by now is beyond me.

Henry Cavill: On the brink of Immortality

ASIA ONE
By Jason Johnson
The New Paper
Monday, Aug 13, 2012

Cavill obviously knows that he will soon be among the most famous human beings on Earth. Everywhere he goes, everyone will know his name, or at least that he's the Superman dude.

For most young actors, getting to star with Bruce Willis in a flick like The Cold Light Of Day would already be a huge thrill and would be the highlight of their career.

Shooting a movie in Spain with the Die Hard guy? That more than justifies having to appear in a Hellraiser movie, as Cavill did in 2005.

The Cold Light Of Day is an action thriller that's vaguely along the lines of Liam Neeson's Taken.

Cavill plays Will Shaw, a Wall Street hotshot whose mother and brother are kidnapped while on vacation in Spain.

As he embarks on his search, he learns that his father (Willis) works for the CIA and that he has a briefcase that can be traded in exchange for his family.

It's so interesting to see Cavill in a role like this knowing what's on the horizon.

He looks like just your run-of-the-mill handsome guy, but he's actually faster than a speeding bullet.

He comes from the planet Krypton.

He's Superman, for crying out loud

Jeremy Irons: Oscar winning Die Hard actor- Trashed in Bishop's Cleeve Saturday, May 26, 2012Gloucestershire Echo

OSCAR winning actor Jeremy Irons left a Bishop’s Cleeve resident stunned when he pulled up on his motorbike outside her house.

The Die Hard film star is a keen environmentalist and visited the village to find out about its nearby toxic waste dump, Wingmoor Farm.

He was filmed speaking to Safety in Waste and Rubbish Disposal (SWARD ) campaigner, Barbara Farmer.

The documentary, Trashed, which features footage of the village and Cleeve Hill, has now been selected for a special screening at Cannes international film festival.

Barbara said: “It was quite surreal to have Jeremy Irons motorcycle up to my house and knock on my door. He spent a lot of time talking with me as the cameras rolled, finding out all about the blight of having thousands of tonnes of toxic incinerator chimney ash dumped on the edge of our villages in open conditions.

“He was astounded by the scale of the hazardous landfill so close to a residential area and in such a beauty spot.”

Blenheim Films came to visit Bishop's Cleeve as part of a tour of worldwide locations that have been blighted by waste disposal.

The crew spent a day filming the area then came back to film the protest in September 2011 when SWARD held a protest to coincide with the Gloucestershire County Council Planning Committee's site visit.

“I was astonished to get a text from the director telling me that she was sitting with Vangelis, who has written the music for the film, watching my clip,” Barbara said.

“So far we've only seen the trailer, which included a brief glimpse of Jeremy Irons with Cleeve Hill behind him. We can't wait to see the finished film.”

SWARD is delighted that Trashed has been selected for Cannes.

Gerard Butler to Topline White House Action Film OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (COLLIDER)

by Adam Chitwood Posted:March 17th, 2012 at 11:28 am

If you’re a fan of the high concept action films of yesteryear (ie. the 1990s) like Con Air and Air Force One, this story may be of particular interest to you. Variety reports that Gerard Butler has signed on to star in the actioner Olympus Has Fallen.

The story is described as Die Hard in the White House and centers on a “down-on-his-luck ex-Secret Service agent who becomes America’s only hope when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is taken over by terrorists.” Despite the absurdity of the premise, I think this sounds like a sufficiently fun action pic.

In a sea of gritty/realistic/gimmicky action movies, an over-the-top story fronted by a hardened lead is actually kind of refreshing.

Alan Rickman: Four way tie- his best villainous roles (THE UNIVERSITY OBSERVER)

Fatal Fourway – Worst Villains Played by Alan Rickman
Contributed by Dermot O'Rourke, Film Editor, Aoife Valentine, Otwo Editor, George Morahan, Otwo Editor and Jon Hozier-Byrne, Editor on Thursday, 1 March 2012T

Dermot – Hans Gruber in Die Hard
There is no denying Alan Rickman’s level of awesomeness is unparalleled. It is his general superiority over you and everyone else that has allowed him to portray of some of the best on-screen villains ever. But I think we can all agree that of all Alan Rickmans’s villains, the best is, of course, none other than Die Hard’s Hans Gruber. Gruber had masterminded the perfect plan to steal bearer bonds from the vault of the Nakatomi Corporation before Bruce Willis’ John McClane yippy-ki-ayed himself in the way to put a damper on proceedings.

Despite that the Grubes really has the all the admirable qualities of a great villain. He is calm (when you don’t have his detonators), calculating, and appreciates a fine suit. When certain people are uncooperative with his efficient plan he has no trouble dispatching them without hesitation. After executing the President of the Nakatomi Corporation, Mr. Tagaki, he dryly delivers the most cutting – if not the most villainous – line in cinematic history, “[Mr. Tagaki] will not be joining us for the rest of his life.” Cue mass hysteria. Only a villain with the slick style of The Grubester could cause that much panic with such a delightfully evil quip.

Vote Grubesy for the win!

Alan Rickman: Five appalling oscar snubs (BBC America)

Five Appalling
Alan Rickman
Oscar Snubs

Last week, Gary Oldman ended his three-decade reign as Oscar’s most perennially snubbed talent, scoring a nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

His Harry Potter co-star Alan Rickman wasn’t so lucky: his well-reviewed performance in the final Potter film gave the British star his best shot at a nod in years, but the movie’s lack of awards momentum killed his chances.

Is Rickman the greatest living British film actor to never be nominated? Here are five Rickman roles that warranted recognition from the Academy:

(1)  Die Hard (1988)
Hans Gruber is where the legend of Rickman began, a role that remains iconic a quarter-century after the thriller pack theaters. Before you declare Die Hard “not an Oscar film,” note that the Academy has nominated worthy supporting actors in so-called “cheesy” blockbusters before (Fred Astaire in Towering Inferno, Alec Guinness in Best Picture nominee Star Wars, and Pat Morita in The Karate Kid, anyone?)

Alan Rickman Flashback! From Harry Potter to Sweeney Todd, the Seminar Star Sizzles on the Big Screen (videos)

Alan Rickman Flashback! From Harry Potter to Sweeney Todd, the Seminar Star Sizzles on the Big Screen
Alan Rickman in 'Harry Potter,' 'Galaxy Quest,' & 'Die Hard'

Alan Rickman shows off his range in six fabulous film performances.

It starts with the voice—a combination of purr and growl that can be sinister or suggestive, depending on the context. We’re talking about Alan Rickman, who is currently starring in the Broadway premiere of Seminar as a novelist who terrorizes four aspiring writers. Rickman is a masterful theater actor, with a pair of Tony nominations (for Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Private Lives) to show for it, as well as a critically acclaimed recent performance in John Gabriel Borkman at BAM. But he’s also a scene-stealing movie favorite whose films run the gamut of comedy, action, fantasy and romance. In honor of the star's November 20 opening night at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, we’ve gathered clips from six of our favorite Rickman film performances.

Hans Gruber in Die Hard
Rickman first attracted the attention of American moviegoers as a German terrorist who matches wits with Bruce Willis in this 1988 action hit. It takes Willis, an entire SWAT team and more to foil Hans’ plan to blow up a skyscraper and make off with $600 million. In the movie's official trailer, Rickman shows off his ability to put a unique spin on even the most prosaic lines due to his awesome powers of enunciation.

Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply
This 1990 British rom-com features a swoon-worthy performance by Rickman as a “ghost” who returns to his grief-stricken lover, Nina (Juliet Stevenson). Their star-crossed second-time-around romance includes this scene, in which Jamie counts the ways he loves Nina and then serenades her with “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” (by the Jersey Boys team of Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe!).

Colonel Christopher Brandon in Sense and Sensibility
The performance that spawned a dozen YouTube fan tributes: Rickman redefines the strong, silent type as the stalwart suitor of a young Kate Winslet in the beloved 1995 Jane Austen film adaptation. This brief clip shows everything you need to know about a man who is desperately in love but can’t bring himself to say so.

Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest
In this irresistible 1999 comedy, Rickman joins Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell and Tony Shalhoub as actors who can’t escape being identified with the roles they played in a Star Trek-type series. Vain Mr. Dane is especially peeved by his plight, until the crew is transported to a spaceship filled with real aliens. Broadway bonus: This clip compilation features Patrick Breen of Next Fall as Rickman’s biggest fan.

Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
“Our. New. Celebrity.” That’s how Rickman sarcastically welcomes (adorable) Daniel Radcliffe to Hogwarts during the 2001 launch of the blockbuster Harry Potter film series. As Professor Snape, Rickman brings an iconic authority figure to life, establishing from the beginning a relationship that matures and grows with each film.

Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd
Alan Rickman singing “Pretty Women” with Johnny Depp? Oh, yeah! As the nemesis of Sweeney Todd in Tim Burton’s 2007 film of Sondheim's masterpiece, Rickman adds a steely spine to the predatory judge, settling into Sweeney’s barber chair for the closest shave of his life. Though we know how this tale will turn out, Rickman, as always, keeps things interesting.
