Eddie Redmayne admits he lost touch with 'pal' Prince William after school

HELLO MAGAZINE
March 3, 2015

Eddie Redmayne has previously spoken about his school days with Prince William, but in a new interview Eddie has revealed that pair never stayed in touch. The Theory of Everything star admitted that he lost contact with the future King after leaving Eton College.

"He was a pal at school, but I haven't seen him since school," Eddie told Loaded magazine. "And no – no messages."

The 33-year-old actor went on to describe how William was probably the more "intimidating" one out of the pair.

"I'm pretty sure Will was more intimidating than I was," said Eddie. "I don't think I intimidated anyone in my life. I haven't seen him since school, but he was a lovely man."

The actor and the royal were both elected to The Eton Society, a group of elite prefects that was also known as "Pop". On top of this, the accomplished schoolboys played on the same rugby team.

"We were on the same Colts B team in 1997," said Eddie. "I always felt slightly sorry for Will because everyone wanted to tackle the future King of England. He took all the hits."

Joining the pair at the prestigious boarding school in Berkshire were William's younger brother Prince Harry and The Avengers star Tom Hiddleston.

While Eddie went on to study history of art at Cambridge – opting for the same degree as William's wife the Duchess of Cambridge – William took up geography at St Andrews.

James McAvoy: Dominance of Rich-Kid Actors in the U.K. Is "Damaging for Society"

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
by Abid Rahman 2/10/2015 12:18am PST

James McAvoy in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'

James McAvoy has waded into the ongoing debate in the U.K. on the current success and dominance of privately educated actors, telling the Herald of Scotland that if the current trend continues it would be "damaging for society."

The Scottish actor, who paid his way through drama school by working in a bakery, was at pains not to criticize the success of privately educated actors, but he was worried that it wasn't representative of Britain as it is today.

"Whenever we talk about this, we have to be very very clear. There's a lot of posh actors that have been to boarding school and all that who are feeling very embattled, sort of cornered," he said, adding: "[N]obody has got anything against an actor who is posh and is doing really well."

But McAvoy was concerned that people from all walks of life are not getting the same opportunities to work in the arts, and his chief worry was about how this will become a bigger problem five or ten years from now.

If the trends are allowed to continue, McAvoy said, "That's a frightening world to live in, because as soon as you get one tiny pocket of society creating all the arts, or culture starts to become representative not of everybody but of one tiny part, and that's not fair to begin with, but it's also damaging for society."

Private schools such as Eton and Harrow are some of the oldest and most elite in the U.K. They often produce future leaders and captains of industry, but in recent years they have begun to churn out stellar acting talent.

The Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne (a classmate of Prince William) and Harrow-educated Benedict Cumberbatch, who are both in the running for the best actor Oscar, are perhaps the most telling examples of the dominance of "posh" actors. But there's also Dominic West (Eton, classmate of Prime Minister David Cameron), Damian Lewis (Eton), Tom Hiddleston (Eton), Henry Cavil (Stowe), Jamie Campbell Bower (Bedales), Tom Hardy (Reed), Matthew Goode (Exeter) and Dan Stevens (Tonbridge), among others.

And it's not just the guys. A whole generation of British actresses are seemingly disproportionately from so-called posh schools, including Rosamund Pike (Badminton), Alice Eve (Bedales), Juno Temple (Bedales), Carey Mulligan (Woldingham), Kate Beckinsale (Godolphin and Latymer), Imogen Poots (Latymer), Emilia Clarke (St Edward's), Emily Blunt (Hurtwood House) and Rebecca Hall (Roedean).

Benedict Cumberbatch, Prince William And More Celebrate The Royal Marsden At Windsor Castle

So, what do we call the bromance between Benedict Cumberbatch and Prince William?

Prince Wenedict? Cumberlliam? I’m not sure. But the bromance is real. The duo shared a few laughs last night as the celebrated The Royal Marsden at Windsor Castle. What do you think they’re talking about? How great they are? How amazing Benedict looks in his tuxedo? What is going to happen on the next season of Sherlock?

There are truly a lot of questions. I bet Benedict wants to know when he’ll get a “Sir” added to his name.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Attacked and Silenced by Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles

Prince William and Kate Middleton Attacked and Silenced by Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles

I’ve always said that the royal family is just as dysfunctional as the Kardashian’s, they just have better taste and manners. Make no mistake, there is a whole lot of drama going on behind closed doors as Queen Elizabeth’s health fails. It is Prince Charles’ birthright to be crowned the next King and Camilla Parker-Bowles thinks she is owed her crown because she suffered as Charles’ side chick for 3 decades before being made an honest (if strongly disliked) woman.

Everyone, including Queen Elizabeth prefers Prince William and Kate Middleton as the next rulers as they are both well-respected and in touch with the real needs of the British people. William is prepared to be a good example and take on the cares of his people while Charles has a history of writing rambling letters about his pet peeves and focusing on flowers or obscure environmental problems – he is considered out of touch and arrogant.

This week Charles stepped up to take over more of Elizabeth’s duties and in his lust for power he opted to make serious changes to the Queen’s press office. Sally Osman who heads Prince Charles’ communications team is now in charge of both Queen Elizabeth’s and Charles’ media affairs. So the voice of The Crown is now under Prince Charles’ control. But even worse, Charles has now moved his people in to silence Kate and Will! It was announced this week that the Kensington Palace Press Office (Kate and William’s media voice) will cease operations shortly. Supposedly he wants everything funneled through one office for the sake of royal continuity.  That kind of makes sense, right?  WRONG!

There is a whole lot more going on here than meets the eye! Kensington Palace has handled everything connected to Prince William, Kate, Prince George and Prince Harry and the office has done a fantastic job of promoting the younger royals. It has added to their popularity with the commoners and has proven that it can handle huge announcements, such as the birth of Prince George with great ease. In shutting down this office Charles will now control what is said to the press regarding William and Kate! Rest assured good old Cami is sick to death of hearing about how stunning or fun Kate is and so those blips will be a thing of the past. It’s a clear cut power struggle. Until now William and Kate have been able to control to a great degree how they are represented in the press and that has worked to their advantage.

A Royal Christening in Britain Amid a Refrain of Coos

NEW YORK TIMES
By KATRIN BENNHOLD
Published: October 23, 2013

LONDON — Some spent the night in the English rain, huddling under tarpaulins and keeping warm with flasks of tea outside St. James’s Palace. It was all to secure a good view of Prince George of Cambridge on his christening day Wednesday. The prince had not been seen in public since he was born three months ago.

Apparently it was worth it. “Aww,” the crowd cooed loudly when the prince, third in line to the throne, arrived with his parents, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton. The sun was out and the prince was dressed in a lace and satin replica of the christening gown made for the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria in 1841. “He looks like a girl,” one delighted onlooker commented.

A royal christening has perhaps a special significance in a country that has its own church. Ever since Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church and established a more accommodating version in 1534 so he could divorce and re-wed (several times), Britain’s royals have been the guardians of the Church of England.

Prince George, in other words, will not just be king one day, he will be defender of the faith and supreme governor of the Church of England.

The archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, baptized the prince, whose full name is George Alexander Louis, with water from the River Jordan in a 45-minute ceremony. Archbishop Welby said he hoped that the event would inspire more Britons to come back to church. In a video released on YouTube ahead of the service, he said Prince George would be joining two billion people around the world in the “family” of the church, adding that “the great good news is that God doesn’t care who we are.”

If tradition was on ample display in some ways, in others it was conspicuously absent.

Prince William, Prince Charles, and the Queen all wore the same Honiton lace and white satin gown to mark their entrance into the Church of England. Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge: The Royal Baby Named!

by Alexis L. Loinaz
E.Entertainment

Royal Highness was born at 4:24 p.m. (British Summer Time) in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces, bestowing the monarchy with its third royal in line to the throne and bringing to a full circle the public's potent fairy-tale fascination that began with the couple's drawn-out courtship and culminated in their storybook wedding in 2011.

As befitting the pomp and pageantry of aristocratic tradition, the baby's arrival—and the eventual announcement of its gender—was heralded via a royal declaration signed by Kate's doctor, taken to Buckingham Palace via police escort, and placed on an easel outside the palace, similar to the protocol that was observed when William was born 31 years ago.

William was by his wife's side when they went to the hospital, he was present during the child's birth and then he spent the night at St. Mary's with Kate and their newborn son.

Royal Family Says Duchess of Cambridge in Labor

NEW YORK TIMES
By ALAN COWELL
Published: July 22, 2013

LONDON — After months of ever more frenetic anticipation and speculation in Britain and around the world, the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton, entered St. Mary’s Hospital in the Paddington district of London on Monday to prepare for the birth of her first child and was “in the early stages of labor,” the royal family announced

A brief message on Twitter was the first of a series of carefully scripted disclosures set to culminate in the announcement of an event that seems certain to draw unparalleled media coverage, even in the annals of Britain’s headline-making royal family. Because of recent changes in the law of succssion, the baby will be third in line to the throne whether it is a boy or a girl and will remain so whatever the gender of subsequent children.

“Her royal highness the Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, in the early stages of labour,” said a message from Clarence House, the official residence of the duchess and her husband, Prince William, the duke of Cambridge.
