Big-budget movies or TV? It’s all the same for Rellik star Ray Stevenson

Brought up in Northumberland, Ray now flies halfway round the world to share a screen with Cate Blanchett.

And as iN10 catches up with him to chat about the BBC’s gritty serial killer drama, he admits it’s not the worst acting gig around.

Northern Ireland-born Ray plays Volstagg, one of the characters in the blockbuster Thor franchise.

“He wasn’t going to be in Thor 3 but then Marvel decided to fly me down to Brisbane to shoot a scene with Cate,” explains Ray.

“It was great. My kids were on set while she was destroying every known world in the universe.

“When you fly back, you’ve no idea what planet you’re on, but it’s a high class problem to have.

“The toughest thing is what to do between jobs, to just try and be normal.”

Ray has become one of Hollywood’s favourite Brit stars and Oscar-winner Blanchett is just one luminary he’s found himself acting alongside.

One of his three forthcoming films, Final Score, sees him play Pierce Brosnan’s brother and he’s also been in movies with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

“I’ve had the most tremendous time. I went toe-to-toe with The Rock in GI Joe: Retaliation.

“I’ve got about a quarter of a centimetre height on him, but his arms are the size of my legs!

“All credit to him. He’s completely committed himself to such a playing range and he does it with such conviction.

“And then there was Denzel Washington, a double Oscar-winner. He was a consummate actor and a very decent person.

Kenneth Branagh Says 'Cinderella' (with Lily James and Sophie McShera of Downton Abbey) is 'Not About a Man Rescuing a Woman' (Q&A)

Cinderella’s rags-to-riches fairy tale is not the sort of project many might expect to be helmed by someone with the more Shakespearean skill set of Kenneth Branagh, recently seen flitting between Norse gods (Thor), Chris Pine-fronted Tom Clancy actioners (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and Swedish TV dramas (Wallander). But 64 years after Walt Disney’s animated version of the tale won the Berlinale’s very first audience award in 1951, Branagh, 54, is about to unveil the world premiere of his live-action retelling, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James in the title role and Cate Blanchett doing her best wicked stepmother.

THR caught up with the five-time Oscar-nominated actor-director, who lives with his film art director wife just outside London, to find out how a filmmaker noted more for his Henry V and Hamlet has taken on Cinderella and her ugly stepsisters.

Was making Cinderella something of a departure for you?

The fairy tale element was a surprise to me in that, although I’ve read them and enjoyed them, I didn’t ever think this was a subject I was likely to make a film about. But when you go back to the original source material, you become aware of how all-pervasive this Cinderella myth is. How many times do you read about “the Cinderella story,” the story of the underdog, the story of the ordinary human being, often subjected to cruelty and ignorance and neglect, who somehow triumphs?

How much did you deviate from the original Disney cartoon?

The animation actually took a number of liberties with the original story, which of course has been told and retold across every type of culture, with different names and even different types of cruelty. There are some in which the stepsisters cut their toes off in order to force their feet into the slipper. What we put front and center was a level of reality and psychological truth in the performances that would be surprising in the context of a fairy tale.

Did you feel much pressure when dealing with one of Disney’s prized characters?

Anybody who goes into the Disney world and takes on one of these live-action versions of an animated classic is always up against that kind of ancestry. But my entire filmmaking career and indeed my entire career has been in and around classics. Probably 90 percent of the stuff I make has inevitably been done before. … Whether it’s playing Hamlet, which has been on the go for 400 years, or pieces from the cinematic world that also have been essayed before, I feel released by that. What I think it confirms when people come back to the stories again is not that they’re tired, but that the themes and the stories and the character are ageless, and that they have a different kind of resonance for each passing generation.

True Detective Season 2 Cast Rumors: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn to Star HBO's Hit Show

The Sunday World has confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn are to star the hugely anticipated show, True Detective Season 2.

38-year old Farrell, who has signed up for the series, said in an interview, "I'm doing the second series. I'm so excited."

"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids", he added.

The description for Farrell's character (Ray Velcoro) reads, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."

The continuous name dropping has become an Internet circus. The latest rumor is that Elisabeth Moss will be joining the cast as well. This has not been confirmed, but it has sparked excitement among fans — yet again.

Big names being linked to the upcoming show include Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Christian Bale. However, none of these stars have been confirmed by HBO. In fact, the network has kept mum on the cast rumors.

Until HBO releases an official list of the main cast for True Detective Season 2, it looks like fans will have to play "guessing game" a little longer.

Prince William is rubbing elbows with the stars!

Cate Blanchett, Emma Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch and more of Hollywood's biggest stars stepped out tonight to attend the Duke of Cambridge's Royal Marsden Hospital charity dinner at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England.

Blanchett stunned in a white, one-shoulder gown with jeweled earrings and her hair up. As for Watson, the 24-year-old looked like the epitome of class and elegance in a crisp white shirt tucked into a floor-length gray skirt. Watson completed her look with a dark red lip.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave rallied from a slow stat to win the Best Film award tonight at the 62nd BAFTA Film Awards in London. The slave drama from Fox Searchlight had 10 nominations but won just two awards, after Chiwetel Ejiofor took the Leading Actor prize for playing Solomon Northrup. Despite the marquee victory in the last major kudofest before the Oscars, it still seemed as though the night belonged to Warner Bros’ Gravity. The space drama picked up a leading six wins from its 11 overall nominations, including for Outstanding British Film — which will keep the debate going about just how British the pic is. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director and the pic cleaned up in the craft categories, taking Sound, Cinematography and Special Visual Effects in addition to a nod for Steven Price’s Original Score. The BAFTA crowd at the packed Royal Opera House in Covent Garden exploded with each win for the movie, which had a leading 11 nominations going into the night.

Still, the 12 Years A Slave victory tonight maintains the film’s front-runner status going into the Oscars on March 2; the film also won the Golden Globe for Motion Picture-Drama. Many feel the Academy will lean the same way, honoring Gravity in the craft categories but not for the Best Picture. The two films have been going head to head all awards season, even scrapping to a rare tie in the PGA Awards contest. “It’s very important,” McQueen said backstage after the victory. “The way the public here — but not just here, in the U.S. — by going to see the picture, means a hell of a lot.” Added producer Brad Pitt: “This is an excuse for us to all get to gather and say job well done. We’re very proud of our work here, and it means a lot to us because of the people we got to work with.”

Cate Blanchett, David Tennant, Sir David Attenborough and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes are also thought to be invited to the star-studded bash, that is being held in the honour of The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RDA), of which the Queen is patron.

According to Hello magazine, the Queen and Kate will greet an estimated 250 guests, including directors, producers, playwrights, teachers and actors, before enjoying a whole host of performances in the Palace's ballroom.

Other members of the royal family, including the Duke of Edinburgh, who will then meet the guests in the state rooms.

The fairy godmother will be getting more screen time in this version than in Disney’s classic animated movie, with the character disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is.

Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella is filling up with familiar faces from the small screen. The live-action re-imagining is set to star Downton Abbey's Lily James as the title character, with Game of Thrones' Richard Madden set to play the Prince. Yesterday, we learned that The Borgias beauty Holliday Grainger signed on to play one of the wicked stepsisters, and today comes word that Downton Abbey's Sophie McShera is set to play the other one.

THR reports that negotiations are underway for McShera to team up with Grainger to play mean stepsisters Drisella and Anastasia in the film. For those unfamiliar with the tale, Cinderella's an orphaned character who lives with her "wicked stepmother" and nasty stepsisters, who regularly ridicule her. Cate Blanchett will play the mentioned stepmother, and when considering all of these TV stars, the Oscar winner seems to be the odd-woman-out... unless we count her pre-Elizabeth miniseries work in the 90s. -

The Borgias' Holliday Grainger Will Ridicule Cinderella In Kenneth Branagh's Adaptation Author: Nick Venable (CINEMA BLEND)

Kenneth) Branagh already has a strong cast lined up for Cinderella, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James in the lead role and Robert Madden as her Prince Charming. As a stepsister, Grainger would be playing the daughter of Cate Blanchett, who will star as the wicked stepmother Lady Tremaine. Something tells me someone equally beautiful is going to nab the other sisterly role. Call me crazy.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Cinderella turned into a period piece, since it seems like Grainger has become the new Keira Knightley in that respect. She currently stars in the 15th century-set, soon-to-wrap-up Showtime drama The Borgias, and will soon star as Bonnie Parker in Lifetime’s upcoming miniseries Bonnie and Clyde. In the past two years, she’s starred in Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre, Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Bel Ami, Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina and Mike Newell’s Great Expectations. I wonder if she’ll ever appear in a movie with a cellphone in it.

Colin Firth to Star Opposite Emma Stone in New Woody Allen Movie 14 hours ago (SCREEN RANT) by Sandy Schaefer

We just barely learned that Colin Firth is going to headline Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class co-writer/director Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming Mark Millar comic book adaptation, The Secret Service, and now reports are in that the Oscar-winning actor is also making plans to co-headline Woody Allen’s currently-untitled followup project to his Summer 2013 release, Blue Jasmine.

The Woodmeister returned to his native U.S. shores to shoot Blue Jasmine, which is a comedy about a New York housewife (Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett) who must deal with “the final stages of an acute crisis.” Per usual for a Woody Allen project, the cast includes big names like Alec Baldwin and comedians Andrew Dice Clay and Louis C.K., in addition to such credible supporting talent as Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), Peter Sarsgaard (Lovelace) and Sally Hawkins (Godzilla).

Deadline is reporting that Allen has plans to resume his European “tour” after Blue Jasmine, by filming his latest original script in the South of France. Firth has yet to finalize the deal, but Allen’s quick-and-easy production approach will make it easier for the King’s Speech actor to work things out; that is, both fit Allen’s movie into his schedule and remain committed to Vaughn’s Secret Service movie (which is due to open in theaters during November 2014).

Firth is a natural match for the Allen-verse; in fact, he’s already played the kind of smart, but dysfunctional – and hopeless when it comes to relationships – creative type which appear throughout Allen’s filmography (see: Firth’s character in Love, Actually). Of course, the award-winner Firth also knows how to play the square and dignified archetype for laughs as well (see: Bridget Jones’s Diary), in case that’s the sort of character that Allen’s hiring Firth to tackle here.

COLIN FIRTH: British Star Colin Firth Lined Up For New Woody Allen Movie (CONTACT MUSIC)

Following the news that Emma Stone is lined up to star in a Woody Allen movie, Deadline have announced that British actor Colin Firth is also in the running to star in the film. As yet untitled, the movie is expected to be shot in the south of France. Woody’s keeping the plot firmly under wraps though it seems that he is working towards putting together a typically stellar cast.

Allen, a prolific, iconic and highly respected director, just finished working on his 44th movie as a director. Entitled Blue Jasmine, the film was set in New York and Los Angeles and stars Alec Baldwin, as well as Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins and Louis CK. The movie is scheduled to open in September 2013. Colin Firth is currently lined up to star in The Secret Service – the next movie from X:Men First Class’s Matthew Vaughn. However, he’s thought to be making room in his schedule to ensure that he lands a slot in Woody Allen’s latest movie.

COLIN FIRTH: Rachel Weisz joins Skinny And Cat (INDEPENDENT)

The Oscar-winning actress has replaced Cate Blanchett - who has apparently left the project - to play famed photographer Margaret Bourke White in the love story, reported Showbiz 411.

Barbra Streisand had also been poised to direct the film, her first in 16 years, but has decided to pass on the job due to scheduling conflicts. Producers are now on the hunt for a new director to take over.

Colin Firth remains attached to play Margaret's husband, novelist Erskine Caldwell.

Skinny And Cat, which focuses on the couple's fiery romance and creative pairing, has been in development since 1982, when producer Linda Yellen wrote her first script.

Exclusive Update: Streisand Not Directing Cate Blanchett, Colin Firth or “Skinny and Cat” (SHOWBIZ 411)

EXCLUSIVE I told you ten months ago that Barbra Streisand would direct her first film in 16 years. It was called “Skinny and Cat.” Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett were all set to star in it. Alas, I am now told that “Skinny and Cat,” a love story about famed photographer Margaret Bourke White and novelist Erskine Caldwell, will proceed without Streisand. Blanchett is also gone, succeeded by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (who actually resembles Bourke White). The financing is completely in place, and the producers are looking for a new director.

But the back story here is quite amazing, and a real Hollywood saga. This project has been kicking around since 1982, when producer Linda Yellen wrote her first script and spoke to Streisand about acting in the film. For years, sources say, like thirty, no one said a word about it. Then last year Streisand expressed interest in it as a director. Unfortunately, a new draft of “Skinny and Cat” was quite different than the one Streisand had last read.  Still, she was adamant about directing it.

In Hollywood, it’s all about scheduling. Even as Streisand felt committed to the cause, she had other projects like a world tour. (Not many directors are also international superstar performers.) Insiders say Streisand was unable to make meetings about the project last fall. In the meantime, Yellen set the movie up with producers Holly Wiersma and Logan Levy under their Lagniappe Films banner. That trio, not Streisand, owns the rights.

During the fall of 2012, when they were unable to secure Streisand in writing–couldn’t make a deal–the trio of Wiersma, Levy and Yellen brought on indie director Drake Doremus (“Like Crazy”). The producers, I’m told, offered Streisand a chance to be a producer on the film without the hassle of directing. Streisand’s reps said she would only do it if her contract read “producer for life.” She was still smarting, they say, from losing out on directing and producing “The Normal Heart” after being involved with it for 30 years.

The “Skinny” trio declined. I’m told what happened next was the threat of legal action against them from a litigator representing Streisand.

Tolkein’s beloved prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” saga – makes its way to Blu-ray, Bilbo Baggins himself – in the form of actor Martin Freeman (“Sherlock”) – looks back at the opening chapter, recalling the journey from green screen sound stages to a full-fledged Shire.

What was the experience of making one of these films with Peter? 
 I think I probably did myself a favor and tried not to do too much imagining about what it might be. I think whatever you conjure up nothing ever is what you imagine it to be. Whether it’s your trip here or your trip home, nothing is ever how you’re going to imagine it. So I suppose I was expecting the unexpected. The only thing I knew it would be was huge. I knew it would feel big, and I was right there. It did feel big. But outside of that, I had a feeling of what Pete was like as a director, but I didn’t have direct experience of him. I knew a couple of the actors but not well. It was really stepping into a different territory. Very often, you’re at least familiar with a few people from around, but I’ve never been to New Zealand before. So it was really much a fresh slate really. I didn’t know Ian [McKellen]. I didn’t know most of the people on it, by a long shot.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Crosses One Billion Dollars and Still Climbing (HERALD ON LINE)

BURBANK, CALIF. — “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” has surpassed the billion dollar milestone at the worldwide box office. The joint announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema; Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios; Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh may help "Cinderella" live happily ever after at Disney.

Just three weeks after original director Mark Romanek ("Never Let Me Go") exited the project, Disney is reportedly in talks with Branagh to come aboard the fairy tale film.

It's scheduled to begin production this fall in London, and the studio is understandably in a hurry to ink a deal with Branagh, according to Vulture.

Cate Blanchett is still attached to play the wicked stepmother, although the search for Cinderella herself is still on. The film has been in the works since 2011, following the massive success of Tim Burton’s "Alice in Wonderland."  The initial script was by Aline Brosh McKenna ("Devil Wears Prada"), but Vulute reports that "Twilight: New Moon" director Chris Weitz has since re-written it.
