Eddie Redmayne tipped to beat Benedict Cumberbatch to Best Actor BAFTA on Sunday

The 33-year-old is tipped to add the gong to his trophy cabinet at the star-studded awards on Sunday.

Eddie, who has been lauded by the critics for his portrayal of scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything, has already won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for the role.

If the London-born actor finds himself victorious at the BAFTAs it should make up for his last trip to the awards.

The star missed his big moment in 2013, when he was set to present the award for original screenplay, after he was suddenly taken ill backstage.

That left Lincoln star Sally Field to come on stage alone and tell the audience: "He seems to be puking his guts out back there", before giving the award to Quentin Tarantino for his western Django Unchained.

The actor had to make do with a kind word from his Les Miserables co-star Anne Hathaway who confirmed his illness when she picked up her award for Best Supporting Actress, saying: "Eddie, feel better. I would be holding your hair back, but - food poisoning is just the worst."

Eddie faces tough competition in the Best Actor category, including fellow British star Benedict Cumberbatch for his role in The Imitation Game, as well as Michael Keaton for Birdman, Ralph Fiennes for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler.

His on-screen wife, Felicity Jones, could triumph as well after she was nominated for the best actress award against stars including Amy Adams and Reese Witherspoon.

The film is based on the memoirs of Hawking's ex-wife Jane which deals with their relationship, his scientific success and the onset of motor neurone disease which left him severely disabled.

Felicity also faces competition from Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike and Julianne Moore for her emotional portrayal of an Alzheimer's sufferer in Still Alice.

Other nominations include nods for Keira Knightley and Imelda Staunton for best supporting actress and Steve Carell and Ethan Hawke for best supporting actor.

The awards, seen as a dry run for the Oscars, will be handed out at London's Royal Opera House.

Among the other awards presented on the night is the Rising Star, which recognises the best new talent.

Unbroken actor Jack O'Connell is among those nominated along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in last year's period drama Belle as a mixed-race aristocrat, and Margot Robbie, who first found fame playing Donna Freedman in TV soap Neighbours and has gone on to appear in The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave rallied from a slow stat to win the Best Film award tonight at the 62nd BAFTA Film Awards in London. The slave drama from Fox Searchlight had 10 nominations but won just two awards, after Chiwetel Ejiofor took the Leading Actor prize for playing Solomon Northrup. Despite the marquee victory in the last major kudofest before the Oscars, it still seemed as though the night belonged to Warner Bros’ Gravity. The space drama picked up a leading six wins from its 11 overall nominations, including for Outstanding British Film — which will keep the debate going about just how British the pic is. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director and the pic cleaned up in the craft categories, taking Sound, Cinematography and Special Visual Effects in addition to a nod for Steven Price’s Original Score. The BAFTA crowd at the packed Royal Opera House in Covent Garden exploded with each win for the movie, which had a leading 11 nominations going into the night.

Still, the 12 Years A Slave victory tonight maintains the film’s front-runner status going into the Oscars on March 2; the film also won the Golden Globe for Motion Picture-Drama. Many feel the Academy will lean the same way, honoring Gravity in the craft categories but not for the Best Picture. The two films have been going head to head all awards season, even scrapping to a rare tie in the PGA Awards contest. “It’s very important,” McQueen said backstage after the victory. “The way the public here — but not just here, in the U.S. — by going to see the picture, means a hell of a lot.” Added producer Brad Pitt: “This is an excuse for us to all get to gather and say job well done. We’re very proud of our work here, and it means a lot to us because of the people we got to work with.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: BAFTA Audience Award nominations released (STV)

'Sherlock', 'Frozen Planet' and 'Celebrity Juice' are among the nominees for the only publicly-voted accolade at the forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards.

The trio of programmes will contest for the YouTube Audience Award at this year's Arqiva British Academy Television Awards along with documentary 'Educating Essex', ' new sitcom 'Fresh Meat' and cooking contest 'The Great British Bake Off' when the ceremony takes place on 27 May.

Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: ''It is terrific to see such a variety of genres represented by the nominated programmes for this year's YouTube Audience Award. Each programme has really engaged the television audience and earned its place on this year's shortlist.''

She joked later backstage: 'Livia Firth better not stand at the top of the stairs when I'm there.' Streep saw off competition from from Berenice Bejo, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis to be named Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Firth chivalrously got down on one knee to place Streep's shoe on the floor so she could put it back on just before delivering her acceptance speech. Streep gave him a kiss on the lips as thanks. 

Afterwards, an teary-eyed Streep revealed she had forgotten to thank J Roy Helland, her make-up and hair assistant, in her acceptance speech. She said: 'I forgot to say his name, and all because of my f***ing shoe.'

Colin Firth: Livia Firth outfits BAFTA stars in eco-friendly outfits (HOLLYWOOD)

Colin Firth's eco-warrior wife Livia convinced Fassbender to wear a Giorgio Armani tuxedo made from ethical wool as part of her Green Carpet Challenge.

 As part of the test, top fashion houses must use recycled materials for their red-carpet looks. Firth reveals there was a last-minute panic for top designer Valentino after the material for Davis' pink recycled soda can gown was almost lost in transit.

 In a post on her Vogue blog, she writes, "On a scale of calm to blind panic, we were somewhere near the latter when the fabric for Viola's dress got stuck in an epic snowstorm on the way to Turin. If it weren't for the valiant attempts of my dear friend Giorgio taking the fabric from Milan to Rome on the train, I think Viola would be wearing actual soda cans rather than the miraculously recycled ones."

The champagne is on ice and the red carpet has been rolled out in preparation for some of the biggest names from the silver screen who will be gathering for the Bafta film awards.

The event is the biggest movie event of the year in the UK and is seen as an accurate pointer for Oscar success.

Hosted by Stephen Fry, the awards take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden tomorrow and are being shown on BBC ONE.

On Friday night many of the starts turned out for a pre-Baftas party at the Savoy Hotel in London.

Actress Emma Watson, who has starred in the Harry Potter movies, arrived dressed entirely in red after launching a new Valentine's range for make-up brand Lancome.

Oscars: Are “Marilyn” and “Tinker” dark horse Best Picture contenders? – AWARDS ALLEY (Hollywood Awards)

hollywoodnews.com: When the BAFTA’s revealed the long list of nominees for their year-end awards, one film leading the pack with 16 nominations was somewhat expected, while another was a bit of a surprise.

The anticipated picture was Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” a British-to-the-core adaptation of John Le Carre’s exquisite novel that has performed admirably at the UK box office and continues to remain in the Oscar hunt for Gary Oldman, possibly a screenplay nod and (deservedly) numerous technical nods. “Tinker” nabbed the most BAFTA nominations with 16, including Best Film.

But it wasn’t alone. It tied Simon Curtis’ “My Week With Marilyn,” which also earned 16 nominations including Best Picture.

Now, what does this mean for the two films? Maybe nothing. Guy Lodge over at InContention dismissed the BAFTA nods as “embarrassing,” though he seemed more upset over omissions (“Shame,” “The Tree of Life” and Vanessa Redgrave in “Coriolanus,” to name just a few).

BAFTA and the Academy share members, obviously, so a film that performs well with one group has the potential to charm the other. And there might be something to be said for quiet, smaller films like “Marilyn” and “Tinker” playing better on DVD screener than they would in a theater. Could this also be why George Clooney’s “The Ides of March” has seen a resurgence of late, with the Producers Guild and the HFPA and their Golden Globes nominations? (Well, the HFPA likely just wanted to ensure George Clooney would attend the Globes, but the Producers Guild was a feather in that film’s cap).

All week, bloggers have been beating the drum for “Bridesmaids,” which continues to perform well with the guilds and could potentially play itself into the Best Picture race as a dark horse contender.

But with a significant boost from the BAFTAs today, is it too much of a stretch to see something like “My Week With Marilyn” – already generating serious heat for Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh – getting into the Best Picture race, as well?

The Orange Rising Star is not a traditional BAFTA award, but rather an audience prize that's handed out on BAFTA night. It's designed to engage the public in the ceremony, particularly the younger movie fans targeted by cellphone giant Orange, the title sponsor of the awards.

The longlist of eight contenders is drawn up by a jury of industry experts, but the five nominees and the winner are decided by public vote. However smart the longlist selections, the candidate with the year's biggest box office has an inherent advantage.

By that yardstick, this year's longlist is unusually hard to read.

It includes several actors who have appeared in blockbusters, several with multiple credits, several whose big films will be released just as the voting is taking place and one wild card in the form of Adam Deacon, a cult hero among the teen cellphone addicts who decide this award.

In order of their U.K. box office in 2011 (through Dec. 19), the contenders are:

2011 BAFTA AWARDS (Hey U Guys.co.uk)

It has been an excellent year for British film, with the big screen playing host to some intriguing debuts from new directors and writers as well as giving some of the country’s finest new actors a chance to shine.

Just over a year since the disbanding of the UK Film Council it is gratifying that the foundation remains for new talent to find its way to an eager public and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts are a key component in the encouragement, nurturing and celebration of this talent.

Though best known for their awards the range of work BAFTA does encompasses all levels of Film, Television and Video Game production and with these industries growing, and arguably with technological advancements making it easier to get started, the next year looks to be better than ever.
If you’ve not already done so do check out the excellent online resource from BAFTA, the BAFTA Guru site, for some excellent video interviews with directors, screenwriters and actors as well as a huge amount of handy information about the work they do and how you can get involved.

If you find yourself staring at a list of resolutions this time tomorrow and top of the list is to get that screenplay finished, or really, actually, for real this time, get that film project off the ground make the Guru site a port of call.

Here’s a short video of the work BAFTA did in 2011 and, providing the Mayans and Roland Emmerich are wrong, 2012 should be a fine year for British cinema. Happy New Year all.

TV Guide Network airs BAFTA Awards Dec. 4, British Designer Showcase added

TV Guide Network will exclusively telecast the BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards on Sunday, December 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. The broadcast will begin with a 30-minute Britannia Award red carpet special.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) has announced that it will add a British Designer Showcase to its 2011 Britannia Awards on Wednesday, November 30 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

High end British fashion designers will provide one outfit as well as accessories, jewelry and bags for the Britannia’s silent auction.

Designers include Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Mulberry, Temperly London, Jimmy Choo, Jenny Packham, Roksanda Ilincic, Dunhill, Stephen Webster, Anya Hindmarch, Ted Baker, Nicholas Kirkwood, Richard Nicoli, Thomas Wylde, Todd Lynn, Reiss, ATELIER SWAROVSKI by Holly Fulton, Stella & Jamie and Izmaylova.

Proceeds from the auction will support BAFTA Los Angeles’ ongoing education, scholarship, community outreach and archival projects.

“The film and television industries have long been synonymous with beauty and style, and fashion is an integral part of the movies on screen and off,” says Donald Haber, Executive Director of BAFTA Los Angeles. “We are delighted to have assembled, with help from our members collaborating with the fashion industry, an outstanding array of established and up-and-coming British designers to give our guests and members the chance to bid on their exquisite pieces, and in turn support our educational outreach programs.”

The Britannia Awards are BAFTA Los Angeles’ highest accolade, a celebration of achievements honoring individuals and companies that have dedicated their careers or corporate missions to advancing the entertainment arts.

The 2011 honorees are Warren Beatty (Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film), Helena Bonham Carter (Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year), John Lasseter (Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment), Ben Stiller (Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy), and David Yates (John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing).

This year’s presenters include Anne Hathaway, Robin Williams, Helen Mirren and Jason Isaacs. Emmy nominated and Tony winning actor Alan Cumming will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles is the only Anglo-American professional organization founded to promote and advance original work in film, television and interactive media.
