Livia Firth helps Prada Go Green at Met Ball (ECORAZZI)

Last night at the 2012 Met Ball, Livia Firth, wife of actor Colin, continued her mission to turn that red carpet green, and enlisted some new names to join the cause.

First up was Livia’s own dress, a beautiful, Gothic inspired number that introduced mecca designer Prada to the Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) for the first time.

“I am hugely proud of what this gown has achieved: it represents a GCC first as it’s the first time a designer has used so many different GCC materials in one single piece. And so the black panelled gown mixes certified silks, tulle and chiffon with sustainably harvested ostrich feathers and end-of-line British made lace,” says Livia of her gown. She adds, “it’s testament to the inventiveness of Guisi Bettoni (who put together our GCC fabric library) that even the ostrich feathers are certified!”

The other shining addition to the Green Carpet Challenge family was actress and environmentalist, Cameron Diaz, who walked the carpet in a breathtaking Stella McCartney. This dazzling and embellished dress was made from organic silk in collaboration with the GCC. The designer then added thousands of glass beads and a crystal chain, sparking a new initiative to the GCC; the traceability and sourcing of embellishment materials.

The US star, 62, quipped that she was waiting for the chance to get Firth alone at the film bash after he gallantly picked up her Jimmy Choo stiletto after it fell off when she climbed the stairs to collect her award for Best Actress.

She joked later backstage: 'Livia Firth better not stand at the top of the stairs when I'm there.' Streep saw off competition from from Berenice Bejo, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis to be named Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Firth chivalrously got down on one knee to place Streep's shoe on the floor so she could put it back on just before delivering her acceptance speech. Streep gave him a kiss on the lips as thanks. 

Afterwards, an teary-eyed Streep revealed she had forgotten to thank J Roy Helland, her make-up and hair assistant, in her acceptance speech. She said: 'I forgot to say his name, and all because of my f***ing shoe.'

Colin Firth Hosts Star-Studded Charity Dinner For Oxfam America (LOOK TO THE STARS)

On February 22, 2012 Vanity Fair and Ermenegildo Zegna, along with Colin and Livia Firth and Anna Zegna, hosted an intimate dinner at Chateau Marmont to benefit Oxfam America, the international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice.

 Over the last ten years, Colin Firth has worked hard, both in public and behind the scenes, to become an extremely knowledgeable and highly respected campaigner for Oxfam. The goal of the project is to show design and creativity doesn’t have to be compromised while working with environmentally friendly materials.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY DEBUTS AT VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

So it was up to their ladies to bring some girl power to the red carpet last night and put the tuxedo majority firmly in their place.

Because while they probably hadn't intended to outshine their other halves, Mrs Colin Firth and Mrs Gary Oldman brought some much needed glamour to the premiere of their new film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy at the Venice Film Festival last night.

Olivia Firth and Alexandra Edenborough gave a feminine touch to the male-dominated red carpet as they arrived with their famous partners to the screening.

Having been used to glitzy events and high-profile award ceremonies this past year thanks to her husband's role in The King's Speech, Olivia, 42, knows how to work a red carpet with the best of them.

And last night she stood out in a simple but stunning strapless silver dress which she teamed with green shoes and emerald earrings as she dazzled by her husband's side.

Alexandra, 34, looked equally as sensational in a long black strapless dress, her hair elegantly pinned back as she posed for the cameras with Oldman.

And Firth and Oldman were not the only cast members bringing their spouses along to add some glamour to the evening

Leading ladies: The film's other stars Mark Strong and John Hurt also brought their wives along to the premiere

Mark Strong arrived with wife Liza Marshall while John Hurt attended with his fourth wife Ann Rees Meyers.

Not to be outdone, one of the film's female stars, Svetlana Khodchenkova, made sure she drew the same amount of attention as the other ladies as she swept into the event in a strapless black furry dress.

And while cast mate Tom Hardy was noticeably absent from the line-up, they joined their co-star Benedict Cumberbatch on the red carpet to promote the film which is based on the 1974 novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carré.

The film, set in the 1970s, tells the story of former MI6 intelligence officer George Smiley, played by Oldman, who comes out of semi-retirement to uncover a Russian agent.

Firth plays fellow spy Bill Haydon known as an urbane womaniser whose conquests include Smiley’s wife.

And last night he said that after a year of being the leading man and the centre of attention, he was happy to take a step back and take a supporting role.

Speaking to journalists at the premiere, he said: 'It was great to have something that was meaty enough to get my teeth into, but let other people do the heavy lifting. It's basically all I did last year and it suited me very well.'
