Colin Firth's eco-warrior wife has heaped praise on Bradley Cooper for daring to wear a tuxedo made of recycled materials to the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (13Jan13).

Livia Firth convinced the actor to don a Tom Ford tuxedo made from ethical wool for her Green Carpet Challenge (Gcc), which asks top designers to create environmentally-friendly red-carpet looks.

In a post on her blog, Livia writes, "This year we opted to celebrate menswear as the divine Golden Globes nominee Bradley Cooper joined the Gcc in a two piece suit by Tom Ford, designed exclusively for the Green Carpet Challenge.

"The suit was made from... low environmental impact, European spun and woven wool suiting. As Gcc fans will know, while we love the glitz and the excitement of the red carpet, we are fascinated by the supply chain and this project gave us the chance to... create a beautiful fibre that stands the test of time.

Italian film producer Livia — mum to Colin’s sons Luca, 11, and nine-year-old Matteo — admitted: “With my kids’ clothes, we do a lot of hand-me-downs with friends.

“I mend. I know often it’s easier to throw away a sock with a hole and buy a new one than mend it, but I don’t do that.”

The pictures show she’s not too fussy herself. She turned up at a UK premiere a while back wearing the same dress KATE WINSLET wore on a red carpet six months earlier.

To be fair, Livia’s money-saving is not all about hanging on to the wads of cash the couple have banked — with Colin worth around £10million.

Thrifty Livia’s an eco-campaigner and Oxfam ambassador and says she sews to save the planet. She added one of her proudest recent achievements was transforming an old pair of Marni trousers from H&M into two cushions to save her buying new ones for the sofa.

It’s hard to feel sorry for the couple’s lads though.

Colin and Livia’s pals include a stack of Hollywood A-listers so it’s unlikely their recycled gear will be too shoddy.

But the boys’ home life does sound dull.

Livia said they get to watch her do the sewing on “pyjama weekends”.

She added: “The children aren’t allowed to do any clubs.

Livia Firth is the creative director of Eco Age , a business that helps people live a more energy-efficient life, and the director of Brightwide.com , an online film festival that streams social and political cinema. A Doctor of Humanities, she lives in London with her husband (the actor Colin Firth) and two children.

How often do you travel? 
Every school holidays, so probably five times a year, mostly to my house in Umbria. I love everything there, from the landscape to the food. It’s simple, calm and relaxing – a contrast to our life in London, where we’re always on the run.

Where in the world would you return?
A Kenyan camp called Rekero in the Masai Mara, where we went with our friend and guide, Tim Melesi.

Do you like adventure holidays? 
I like nature, but I hate posh safari camps, where it’s rough and wild outside but luxurious and separate from local life inside. We like travelling with Tim partly because it is just us and his Jeep. You feel you’re the only people who have ever seen that giraffe. Once we spent all day watching a leopard that had killed a wildebeest and taken it up a tree; the kids were mesmerised. We have what they call in Italy mal d’Africa – when you are away from it, you long to go back.


Where would you like to go next?
Vietnam and Cambodia. I’ve seen both countries in movies, and spotted a hotel in Mr and Mrs Smith – a guide we like – that looks incredible.

Are you a lover of luxury or simplicity? 
Luxury when I work; when you are busy, it’s nice to be somewhere efficient and comfortable. On holiday I’m drawn to simple things, not fuss

Ethical fashion campaigner Livia Firth has been recognized as an international ‘Leader of Change' 2012 for her work with the fashion industry.

The founder of the Green Carpet challenge, who is married to Oscar-winner Colin Firth, was chosen by the Foundation for Social Change in conjunction with the United Nations Office for Partnerships for her work highlighting supply-chain ethics in fashion.

‘Receiving this award is a great honour and a wonderful recognition of everything the Green Carpet Challenge has achieved so far,’ says Livia.

‘The Foundation for Social Change sits perfectly with GCC values. We believe passionately in putting environmental and social justice on a platform with world class design and production.’

The Oscar-winning actor's wife, Livia, has her own ethical fashion collection, Livia Firth Design, and he is taking inspiration from his spouse by wearing recycled outfits.

When asked if Colin has worn environmentally-friendly clothes, Livia said: ''Yes, he does and so does Michael Fassbender.''

Livia also says she hopes her collection has inspired other designers to be more ethical with their designs as it's so important.

She told Britain's Hello! magazine: ''Fast fashion is a problem, but we have to try and make companies responsible to make things better. What is the solution? I don't know. Hopefully it will work. Some are starting to take steps and that is admirable. We buy too much as consumers so perhaps we should also take care with buying things that we don't really need.''

Fashion week launched in London with a message - green is great - and the woman who has made it her mission to spread the word is Livia Firth.

Livia, the wife of Colin Firth, has been extolling the benefits of eco-fashion for the last few years.

She and her journalist friend Lucy Siegle are the brains behind the Green Carpet Challenge.

This saw Livia wearing sustainable designs to star-studded events while her husband was in the running for an Oscar for both A Single Man and The King's Speech.

She also managed to persuade a host of A-listers including Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Cameron Diaz to do the same.

Her latest initiative is The Green Cut which celebrates the best of fashion, film and sustainability, bringing together the British Fashion Council and the British Film Institute for the first time.

She worked with American Express and eight fashion designers, each of whom used a classic film as the inspiration for their design.

Livia told Sky News the success of her eco-project had exceeded all her expectations.

Colin Firth's wife is "pushing" for him to appear in a new Bridget Jones movie.

Eco-fashionista Livia Firth is a huge fan of romantic comedies. She would love to see her husband reprise his role as dependable lawyer Mark Darcy in the popular franchise.

"I still love Sex and the City. I like romcoms but Colin hates them," she revealed to the latest issue of UK magazine Marie Claire. "I hope he'll do another Bridget Jones - I'm pushing for it!"

Renée Zellweger is set to reprise the title character in the third instalment, while Hugh Grant will play Mark's archenemy, womaniser Daniel Cleaver.

It has been reported that the new movie will see Bridget and Mark struggle to have a baby. Bridget then ends up getting pregnant following a fling with her former flame Daniel.

Livia Firth helps Prada Go Green at Met Ball (ECORAZZI)

Last night at the 2012 Met Ball, Livia Firth, wife of actor Colin, continued her mission to turn that red carpet green, and enlisted some new names to join the cause.

First up was Livia’s own dress, a beautiful, Gothic inspired number that introduced mecca designer Prada to the Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) for the first time.

“I am hugely proud of what this gown has achieved: it represents a GCC first as it’s the first time a designer has used so many different GCC materials in one single piece. And so the black panelled gown mixes certified silks, tulle and chiffon with sustainably harvested ostrich feathers and end-of-line British made lace,” says Livia of her gown. She adds, “it’s testament to the inventiveness of Guisi Bettoni (who put together our GCC fabric library) that even the ostrich feathers are certified!”

The other shining addition to the Green Carpet Challenge family was actress and environmentalist, Cameron Diaz, who walked the carpet in a breathtaking Stella McCartney. This dazzling and embellished dress was made from organic silk in collaboration with the GCC. The designer then added thousands of glass beads and a crystal chain, sparking a new initiative to the GCC; the traceability and sourcing of embellishment materials.

Livia Firth Challenges Hollywood to go Green on Red Carpet BY CRYSTAL WILTSHIRE APRIL 27, 2012 (ECORAZZI)

Every Hollywood star knows that one of the most important parts of an awards ceremony is who you are wearing. Livia Firth, wife of Academy Award-winning actor Colin, wants the kind of fabric you are wearing to be just as essential. Firth founded the Green Carpet Challenge in 2009, to influence top designers to rethink their fabric choices when designing fashions for the world’s biggest starts.

The challenge encourages designers to consider ecologically friendly and socially responsible fabrics when creating their pieces. “First of all, you want to wear something that is made with non-toxic materials and dyes and also that it’s made by people who are happy fundamentally,” Firth says.

She herself has worn yarn made from recycled plastic bottles to the Golden Globes, material from repurposed thrift store finds for the Oscars and discarded fabric to meet Queen Elizabeth II. With the Challenge now in its third year, Firth is on a mission to convince some of the biggest names in Hollywood to follow her lead, including designer and film director Tom Ford, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep and rising star Michael Fassbender.

“A designer will create a gown for an actress anyway. So what we do is to work with the designers to switch the fabric to eco-alternatives,” Firth said. One of Firth’s own “green carpet” triumphs was an emerald green gown made of upcycled fabric created from scratch by British designer Henrietta Ludgate who produces her designs out of a small workshop/showroom in London.

 “We source from mills in Scotland and England. We upcycle fabrics and we produce everything locally. It’s zero clothes miles,” Ludgate said. This method gives Ludgate a very hands on approach to the production process which results in a superior product. She goes on to say, “People buy for design rather than sustainability. When they find out about it, I’m hoping that they will buy more!”

AMONG the people who turned out to toast Carry Somers' success at the re-launch of her specialist hat shop in Ashbourne was the woman who has "turned the red carpet green", writes Kate Burnett.

Livia Firth, wife of Oscar-winning-actor Colin Firth, came to show her support to Carry at Pachacuti.They met at the Observer Ethical Awards three years ago and Livia says she is now wears Pachacuti Panama hat all summer.

She was clearly delighted to be there, tweeting "I'm in HEAVEN" on the website while shopping. The premises boasts ready-to-wear creations and also a bespoke area where customers can pick out their own design and trims.

All of Pachacuti's items are Fair Trade-certified, which Livia says is "what makes them so special". Adding to her collection at boutique yesterday, the Vogue fashion blogger said she already has a vast collection of hats at home, which she has been building up for the last 10 years after losing everything when moving house.

She has about 12 Pachacuti hats, and has even given one to her husband. "Colin has one of the Panamas. He's very fond of it," she said.

Tinseltown may have rolled up its award-season red carpet, but Livia Firth isn’t one to sit idly by on the sidelines.

The Eco Age creative director, who’s married to Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth, has unveiled the first in a luxury line of clothing and accessories aptly known as Livia Firth Design. Designed with “love, fair trade rules, and environmental standards in mind,” her limited-edition skull necklace is the work of a small cooperative workshop in Devon, where artisans employ the ancient art of cire perdue (also known as lost-wax casting) to mold the individual elements by hand.

“LFD has, at its heart, simplicity and glamour and a little bit of playfulness, which should always be part of our life,” Firth says. Livia Firth (right) and Giusy Bettoni SAME CLOTH Firth is also teaming up with Giusy Bettoni of C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy), a global network of planet-forward textile showrooms, to establish the first Green Carpet Challenge Fabric Library. Here's a list of reasons this blogger thinks fair fashion is anything but frivolous.

Often enough, people ask me why I cover ethical fashion. With a hard science background and passion for a cleaner Earth, aren't there other aspects of environmentalism that are more important, and less frivolous, than fashion? My answer usually takes a couple of minutes, because answering this question requires an explanation of the hugeness of the industry, and the equally large footprint of our clothing, shoes and accessories.

What most people don't understand is the size and reach of the fashion industry: every single person on Earth — all 7 billion-plus — have to get dressed ever day, after all. And for those who suggest that all of us wear a uniform of sorts that could be endlessly recycled (this comes up quite often in these discussions), I would argue that dressing ourselves is one of human beings' oldest forms of expression, and one of the original arts in many cultures.

You don't get woven Mohawk tribal patterns, Peruvian embroidery, Irish donegals or African kente prints without thousands of years of human creativity. Do we really want to do away with personal expression? Having spent just one year wearing a school uniform, I'll tell you that the idea, while practical, is dehumanizing to many of us. What we can do is buy less clothing, shop vintage and ethical fashion, recycle and upcycle where we can, and swap clothes, instead of participating in the fast fashion junkfest.

Meryl Streep’s girls pick a winner for their Oscar winning mother (MAIL ON LINE)

When Mamie and Grace Gummer saw what their mother Meryl originally planned to wear to Sunday’s Oscars, they told her to get it off - and replace it with a gown that made her look like a winner. That’s where the gold lamé Lanvin gown came in.

It was made from old plastic bottles - that’s what Colin Firth’s wife Livia told me.She organised eco-friendly dresses and suits (Kenneth Branagh wore one) for the Oscar red carpet, including the dress chosen by Streep’s daughters for the ceremony. And she duly picked up the award for her brilliant portrait of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Streep and her representatives refused to divulge the provenance of the dress dumped by the Gummer girls (they use the name of their dad Don Gummer, who’s been wed to Meryl since 1978).

 As part of the test, top fashion houses must use recycled materials for their red-carpet looks. Firth reveals there was a last-minute panic for top designer Valentino after the material for Davis' pink recycled soda can gown was almost lost in transit.

 In a post on her Vogue blog, she writes, "On a scale of calm to blind panic, we were somewhere near the latter when the fabric for Viola's dress got stuck in an epic snowstorm on the way to Turin. If it weren't for the valiant attempts of my dear friend Giorgio taking the fabric from Milan to Rome on the train, I think Viola would be wearing actual soda cans rather than the miraculously recycled ones."
