Actor Colin Firth gets dual British-Italian citizenship

BBC
September 23, 2017

British actor Colin Firth has become an Italian citizen, the country's authorities have confirmed.

His wife - film producer Livia Giuggioli - is Italian, making the Oscar-winning Bridget Jones star eligible for citizenship there.

The 56-year-old now has dual citizenship and can therefore keep his British passport.

Firth said he had applied for an Italian passport because of "the uncertainty around".

The actor said that he has been connected to Italy "for more than two decades now".

"I was married there and had two children born in Rome," he added.

Colin Firth on stardom: 'You're a bit part in a farce'

"You're a bit part in a farce. You're not the star of some big tragedy. If you lose your sense of the absurd, you're likely to become miserable. Don't take this lofty position that the fruit baskets and first-class travel are vulgar. Laugh it off. You're not winning a Nobel Prize for science. We're not that important. Treat it as a rather enjoyable farce," says Firth. "All we do is what we like. We put on costumes and pretend, which is very similar to what I was doing when I was 5."

And yet, says Firth, treat your work, and those who do it with you, with respect. "Every so often, you get brought up short that you had a brush with something important. This story is important and you're entrusted with that," he says of his and Irvine's film, about a tortured World War II prisoner who forgives his tormentors.

Firth and Irvine have a pretty solid connection.

"If I have half the career Colin has had and could be half as decent…" muses Irvine.

Firth still makes ladies swoon for his portrayal of dreamy Mr. Darcy in the 1995 British TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and won a best-actor Oscar for playing a stuttering monarch in 2010's The King's Speech. And Irvine carried Steven Spielberg's 2011 epic War Horse before being hand-picked by Firth to play the youthful version of train engineer turned POW Eric Lomax in The Railway Man.

Seeing someone so chiseled and fresh-faced playing him is, admits Firth, "a little humbling, I'm afraid. Particularly as I'm being told that he does a better Colin Firth than I do. I think it might be time to retire."

But not before he and Irvine discuss and dissect all the perks and perils of their chosen careers.

On choosing their roles wisely: For Firth, who has starred in musicals (Mamma Mia!), romantic romps (Bridget Jones's Diary) and shadowy capers (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), it comes down to what feels right in the moment. Sometimes, he's up for a lark. Other times, he craves something more serious. "I find the criteria change every time. This one, heavily weighing in the scales was the importance of the story and why the hell wasn't it told," says Firth. And for Irvine, a World War II buff, it came down to the importance of telling this particular story. "It's also a movie about the very best in people. I can't relate to what Eric went through but I can't imagine forgiving someone. That's one of the most extraordinary things," says Irvine, who vacillates between big studio films and smaller fare like Railway Man.

On being a public figure: Firth, dapper and debonair as he is, is someone who lives his life behind closed doors, by choice. He's married to Italian environmental activist Livia Giuggioli, and has two sons with her, Luca, 13 and Matteo, 10 (and an older son from a relationship with actress Meg Tilly). "It's not my life plan to be private but I've never intended otherwise. I've never had an instinct to do it any other way. When I was Jeremy's age, I never imagined my work would put me in front of a camera. I liked doing plays. I didn't bargain for any level of recognition, really," says Firth. "My instinct to retreat when I'm not on is a driving force. I wear the same things most of the time when I show up now. It's a single body armor for that duty. And the rest is simply nobody's business." For Irvine, it's still a learning process when he's recognized. "When someone catches you off-guard, when you're out shopping, I often think I'm more nervous than them," he says.

She has a large collection of very fashionable friends as well as of course the dapper Colin Firth as her husband.

And on Tuesday evening Livia once again showed off her style credentials as she attended The Contemporary Art Society gala at the Tobacco Dock, London alongside the actor.

The mother-of-three turned heads wearing a bold Sixties inspired floral dress which looked both fun and elegant.

The Rome-born producer, who has been married to Colin since 1997, carried a small pink clutch bag and wore thick black tights with a pair of black heels.

Colin meanwhile wasn’t quite so adventurous and wore a smart dark blue suit, which made him look particularly dashing.

Affectionate: Colin Firth and wife Livia attend The Railway Man premiere at Odeon West End cinema on Wednesday evening

He may be one of Britain's most successful actors.

But Colin Firth still knows who comes first in his life as he showered his wife with affection on the red carpet on Wednesday evening.

The pair were spotted at the premiere of The Railway Man, at Odeon West End Cinema looking smart and sophisticated in similar suits.

Colin, 53, was dressed in a sharp, tailored blue suit, white shirt, polka dot tie and black brogues for the occasion.

The Bridget Jones's Diary actor slicked back his brunette tresses whilst appearing trim and and in shape for the prestigious evening.

Bang Showbiz

Colin Firth always makes time for romance with his wife.

The 'Gambit' star has been married to his spouse, Italian film director Livia Giuggioli, for 16 years and although his acting career means he has to spend a lot of time away from her, Colin always makes sure they spend quality time together as a couple.

Colin told Britain's HELLO! magazine: ''There's no formula but you need to be attentive to not getting distracted by the routine things of living together and fine time for romance.''

He added: ''We make sure we take time for ourselves where we enjoy each other's company without worrying about anything else that might be going on.''

Colin met 44-year-old Livia whilst working on TV mini-series, 'Nostromo', in Colombia and admits he was anxious when he first saw her coming towards him.

He said: ''I recall standing on the steps of an old church in the town centre when I saw this vision of a woman walking through a crowd in the square.

Colin Firth: Caffeinated and impassioned in Toronto

DETROIT FREE PRESS
by Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY

TORONTO - Colin Firth doesn't mind aging himself. "I've been coming here since the late '80s, when it was so much smaller," says the Oscar winner regarding the International Film Festival, which runs through Sept. 15. He's been here for The King's Speech and A Single Man - winning an Oscar for the former and being nominated for the latter.

And this year, Firth is headlining the war drama The Railway Man, directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and co-starring Nicole Kidman, based on Eric Lomax's autobiography of the same name.

In the film (no U.S. release date yet) and the book, Firth's Lomax is taken captive during World War II and sent to a POW camp by the Japanese, where he is forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway and suffers almost unspeakable atrocities.

"What happened was so brutal that you can't tell adventure stories about that stuff," says Firth. "Once you understand what individuals did for each other, it's probably more heroic than you can imagine." He spent time with Lomax, an experience he says was critical to developing the role.

"You do what you can. Our tools are very limited. You're employed to represent experiences that are beyond your understanding. I've never been through anything approaching that. My courage has never had to be summoned for anything like that. I can only offer my imagination."

Force of Firth: Nicole Kidman sends for Britain's heart-throb He's the ideal husband for the millions of women who go to see his films, and to many of his leading ladies PAUL GALLAGHER (INDEPENDENT)

He is arguably Britain's greatest living heart-throb. Millions consider him their dream husband, and Nicole Kidman is no different. Unlike anyone else, the Oscar-winning actress is in a position to live her Colin Firth fantasy not just once, but twice.

No sooner had filming ended on the upcoming Second World War drama The Railway Man, in which they play a married couple, than cameras begin rolling in London this week on the pair's next project.

Kidman was the first to sign up to play the lead in Before I Go to Sleep, based on the S J Watson novel about a woman who wakes up every morning with no memory. She was followed by the Zero Dark Thirty star Mark Strong. But the Australian wanted only one man to play her on-screen husband, again.

Strong told The Independent on Sunday that he was looking forward to working with Firth and Kidman: "They're teaming up again. Colin plays Nicole's husband and I play her doctor. It's all being filmed in London."

Rowan Joffe, who wrote The American and 28 Weeks Later, has written the screenplay and is directing. Strong added: "It's a very, good script, a really good thriller. It's a nice one to do."

Before I Go to Sleep would have been the third Firth/Kidman movie if Firth hadn't dropped out of Chan-wook Park's English-language debut film Stoker, which previewed at last month's Sundance Film Festival. But Kidman was not to be denied a second time.

Since his breakthrough performance as Mr Darcy in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice almost 20 years ago, Firth has gone on to melt the hearts of a slew Hollywood's leading ladies. His eco-activism has earned him another set of swooning admirers.

Though he may be no George Clooney or Brad Pitt, Firth has utilized his old-school charm to turn himself into an unlikely sex symbol. Initially bemused at the "mass hysteria" that followed his emergence from that lake in clinging breeches, he has spoken of the difficulties in filming love scenes with some of the world's most beautiful women.

As charming off-screen as on, he famously got down on one knee for Meryl Streep at last year's Baftas, to pick up her Jimmy Choo stiletto after it fell off when The Iron Lady star climbed the stairs to collect her award for best actress. Streep gave her Mamma Mia! co-star a kiss on the lips for his act of chivalry, which enabled her to put the shoe back on before delivering her acceptance speech.

"That couldn't have gone worse," Streep joked. Millions of women begged to differ.

Cameron Diaz gushed about playing opposite Firth in last year's Coen brothers' comedy Gambit, while Renée Zellweger, Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson have all been equally besotted.

Helen Mirren even joked last month when receiving a star along the Hollywood Walk of Fame next to her fellow Brit: "I couldn't be prouder and more happy that I'm actually going to finally lie next to Colin Firth, something I've been wanting to do for a very long time."

Firth has laughed off claims in the past that he keeps falling for his leading ladies. The 52-year-old has a 22-year-old son, William, from his relationship with the Canadian actress Meg Tilly, whom he met on the set of Valmont. He briefly dated his Pride and Prejudice co-star Jennifer Ehle, before starting a relationship with Livia Giuggioli, an Italian documentary maker whom he met in Colombia in 1996 while filming the TV series Nostromo. They have two sons, Luca and Matteo.

Livia Firth's travelling life The green entrepreneur Livia Firth reflects on her love of simple safaris and romantic escapes with husband Colin. (TRAVELING LIFE)

Interview by Lisa Grainger 6:45AM GMT 30 Nov 2012

Livia Firth is the creative director of Eco Age , a business that helps people live a more energy-efficient life, and the director of Brightwide.com , an online film festival that streams social and political cinema. A Doctor of Humanities, she lives in London with her husband (the actor Colin Firth) and two children.

How often do you travel?
Every school holidays, so probably five times a year, mostly to my house in Umbria. I love everything there, from the landscape to the food. It’s simple, calm and relaxing – a contrast to our life in London, where we’re always on the run.

Where in the world would you return?
A Kenyan camp called Rekero in the Masai Mara, where we went with our friend and guide, Tim Melesi.

Do you like adventure holidays?
I like nature, but I hate posh safari camps, where it’s rough and wild outside but luxurious and separate from local life inside. We like travelling with Tim partly because it is just us and his Jeep. You feel you’re the only people who have ever seen that giraffe. Once we spent all day watching a leopard that had killed a wildebeest and taken it up a tree; the kids were mesmerised. We have what they call in Italy mal d’Africa – when you are away from it, you long to go back.

Where would you like to go next?
Vietnam and Cambodia. I’ve seen both countries in movies, and spotted a hotel in Mr and Mrs Smith – a guide we like – that looks incredible.

Are you a lover of luxury or simplicity?
Luxury when I work; when you are busy, it’s nice to be somewhere efficient and comfortable. On holiday I’m drawn to simple things, not fuss

Livia Firth is a global ambassador for Oxfam.

Colin Firth's eco-friendly clothes (EXPOSE ENTERTAINMENT)

Colin Firth wears environmentally-friendly clothes on the red carpet.

The Oscar-winning actor's wife, Livia, has her own ethical fashion collection, Livia Firth Design, and he is taking inspiration from his spouse by wearing recycled outfits.

When asked if Colin has worn environmentally-friendly clothes, Livia said: ''Yes, he does and so does Michael Fassbender.''

Livia also says she hopes her collection has inspired other designers to be more ethical with their designs as it's so important.

She told Britain's Hello! magazine: ''Fast fashion is a problem, but we have to try and make companies responsible to make things better. What is the solution? I don't know. Hopefully it will work. Some are starting to take steps and that is admirable. We buy too much as consumers so perhaps we should also take care with buying things that we don't really need.''

Colin Firth: We’re Quite Looking Forward To ‘The King’s Speech’ Sequel [PHOTOS] (SOCIALITE LIFE)

Can you really blame Livia Firth for staring at her husband?  Damn it, that man gets better with age.  Seems like only yesterday he was standing like a fool in Mrs. Jones’ sitting room, wearing a reindeer jumper and sticking his nose up at the turkey curry buffet.

Colin Firth walked the red carpet tonight at the BFI London Film Festival, looking dishy as hell in his suit.

Did you know that Firth will reprise his Oscar-winning role as King George VI in a sequel to The King’s Speech?  The UK Press Association (via Moviefone), confirms that the film is in the “very early stages,” but that Firth and co-stars Helena Bonham Carter (who played the Queen Mother) and Geoffrey Rush (who played Lionel Logue) are likely to return.

Livia Firth: Green Is Great For Fashion Week Designers Colin Firth's film producer wife Livia challenges eight designers to combine cinema, fashion and sustainability in their work. (SKY NEWS)

By Lucy Cotter, Arts & Entertainment Correspondent

Fashion week launched in London with a message - green is great - and the woman who has made it her mission to spread the word is Livia Firth.

Livia, the wife of Colin Firth, has been extolling the benefits of eco-fashion for the last few years.

She and her journalist friend Lucy Siegle are the brains behind the Green Carpet Challenge.

This saw Livia wearing sustainable designs to star-studded events while her husband was in the running for an Oscar for both A Single Man and The King's Speech.

She also managed to persuade a host of A-listers including Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Cameron Diaz to do the same.

Her latest initiative is The Green Cut which celebrates the best of fashion, film and sustainability, bringing together the British Fashion Council and the British Film Institute for the first time.

She worked with American Express and eight fashion designers, each of whom used a classic film as the inspiration for their design.

Livia told Sky News the success of her eco-project had exceeded all her expectations.

Colin Firth: Livia Firth Named As Oxfam Ambassador (LOOK TO THE STARS)

July 20, 2012

Oxfam is delighted to announce Livia Firth as its newest Global Ambassador, joining among others Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Scarlett Johansson, and Coldplay's Chris Martin to partner the charity in its campaigning and fundraising work.

Livia has supported Oxfam for many years and has visited its programs in Bangladesh and Zambia. She has helped Oxfam to raise funds in the UK, America and in her native Italy, and she and her Oscar-winning actor husband Colin Firth – a fellow Oxfam Ambassador – have hosted a number of fundraising events for the charity. She has also used her considerable persuasive skills to encourage other influential women to join her in supporting Oxfam’s work.

Livia regularly supports Oxfam fundraising auctions. She has previously donated the jewelry she wore to the 2011 BAFTAs, and to the 2011 Oscar Ceremony – which were made from the world’s first Fairtrade and ecologically certified gold. Most recently she donated four unique gowns that she has worn on the red carpet. The dresses by Armani, Valentino, Gucci and Prada are all bespoke sustainable pieces produced for Livia’s Green Carpet Challenge – a dynamic project which pairs glamour and ethics to raise the profile of sustainable style at the world’s most high profile red carpet events. Her work towards a more sustainable fashion industry is partly inspired by trips she has made to producer countries such as visiting garment workers in Bangladesh with Oxfam.

Livia said: ‘An on the ground visit with Oxfam’s partners really helped to open my eyes to the truth of the global supply chain for fashion. Meeting the women who produce our fashion brought me face to face with the realities of life in a garment factory and the urgent need for reform and equality in our supply chains. Let’s support these women as they support our wardrobes!’
